** Fans tend to remember Ash's failures better than his successes. "Ash will never win in any Pokémon League" is a common punchline, even though he had won the Orange Islands League (which, due to being filler, fans tend not to count, even if the creator's do) and has been able to come out on top in other competitions. His loss at the Kalos League after seeming like he would finally win one is especially infamous. [[spoiler:This thankfully died down once Ash won the Alola League Championship. Though it did admittedly take him more than twenty real life years to do it, the fact that Ash finally won was enough to silence most of those criticisms, albeit controversy persists on whether said victory was earned or not.]]

*** In particular, the fandom tends to exaggerate his losses to Paul as if Ash only had his first true victory against Paul in the Sinnoh League and he lost every battle beforehand. While it is true that the league battle brought their rivalry to a close, Paul only won three of the six battles they had beforehand with their first battle being a draw, Ash defeating Paul in the Pokéringer event and one battle being inconclusive or a draw due to Ash's Chimchar first activating its Blaze ability. Not helping the matter is that before the Sinnoh League, their most remembered battle was the one at Lake Acuity, which ended with a 6-2 loss for Ash.

** In canon, Paul's abusive trainer side was only really showcased through Chimchar, which he only insisted on training in spite of not being receptive of it because he wanted to unlock the power of its Blaze, but a lot of fans seem to believe that Paul extended said treatment to his whole team or released every Pokémon [[YouHaveFailedMe that failed to live up to his standards]], which the series itself shows to not be true due to the occasional PetTheDog moment towards his team, proof that several of Paul's Pokémon respect him, how none of the other mainstays of Paul's team were ever released even when they lost onscreen, and how the few other Pokémon he released were always either on the spot or in far more humane ways than Chimchar was (most notably giving his Azumarill to a younger trainer rather than releasing it in the wild). His callous treatment of Chimchar and generally [[{{Jerkass}} unpleasant attitude]], however, was enough for certain fans to insist on a very exaggerated view of his negative qualities.
