* DarthWiki/NightmareFuel: If the awful realities of World War 1 weren't bad enough, for every year in "Treaties, Trenches, Mud, and Blood" [[WarGod Ares]] is shown eating millions of soldiers. He starts out looking like a fairly standard Greek god in 1914, but as the war drags on, Ares gets less and less human and more mechanical and frightening, until by 1918 he's a terrifying four-armed MechanicalAbomination attempting to EatTheCamera.

** In "Alamo All-Stars", the deadly disease Cholera, which took the lives of multiple people including Jim Bowie's wife and family, is portrayed as a horrifying monster with multiple arms and tons of skull heads, looking like a UndeadAbomination. If anything, it really illustrates how terrifying Cholera was during this era, while also giving plenty of people nightmares.

* HilariousInHindsight: The World War 1 book shows Ares, the God of War, growing stronger as the conflict rages on. The idea of Ares getting more powerful due to the Great War would later be seen [[Film/WonderWoman2017 elsewhere]] just three years after the book was released.

"What an Idiot!" is now Flame Bait.

* WhatAnIdiot: In ''Major Impossible'', Andy Hall and William Hawkins are carrying the group's food supplies and decide to toss some of it away to make their boat lighter. Hale even points out what a mistake that will prove to be.

* TheWoobie: ''Nathan Hale''. All the poor guy wanted to do was help his country, and after getting suffering from a powder burn, getting unbelievably sick, and going through absolute torture as a soldier, he messes up his first spy mission and is sentenced to die by hanging. Even getting eaten by ''The Big Huge Book of American History'' doesn't help, as now Nathan ''knows'' that he's going to die, ''and can't do anything about it.'' You just want to give the poor guy a hug.

* SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoments:
** The Hangman's EstablishingCharacterMoment in ''One Dead Spy'', where he decides to help Nathan Hale figure out his last words while waiting for the Provost to come back with the hanging papers. For all his cluelessness over the subject (he fails to realize that if he gives Nathan an idea for his last words, they won't be ''his'' last words), he is genuinely trying to console Nathan in his own weird way, and the spy appreciates it.
--->'''Nathan Hale:''' I regret that [[ItMakesSenseInContext I do not have a sandwich to give you.]]
--->'''The Hangman''' That's all right, I have a sandwich waiting for me at home. You seem like a nice fellow. [[DarkIsNotEvil I regret that I do not have an extra life to give you.]]
** Any time that Nathan smiles or is genuinely happy is this. He's had such a rough life that whenever he gets to have a good time (such as laughing at Hangman's "pander bears" joke in ''Cold War Correspondent'' or getting to take a break from storytelling in ''Let's Make History!''), it's just nice to see.
