* CriticalBacklash: As years pass following the game's release and the emotions surrounding its failure have begun to subside, re-evaluations of ''Mighty No. 9'' have shifted the narrative surrounding the game from "one of the worst games of the decade" to "[[SoOkayItsAverage a fairly middling game]] marred by [[OvershadowedByControversy terrible publicity]]". While the public history surrounding the game's TroubledProduction, infamous marketing, and high levels of developer overconfidence followed by crashing public disappointment are still pretty hard to disassociate from ''Mighty No. 9'', those who play the game today may find it to just be a mediocre, but otherwise pretty harmless platformer with ''Mega Man'' influences on its sleeve, one that probably would've just passed in the night and be nothing more if it released in a different situation. With Creator/IntiCreates managing to create [[SurprisinglyImprovedSequel a more well-received alternative]] in their spin-off/crossover series ''VideoGame/MightyGunvolt'', ''Mighty No. 9'' is being slightly more remembered for having a few good, fun ideas rather than being an unsalvageable disaster.

** The game’s poor reception and TroubledProduction combined with its very high profile Kickstarter campaign also helped cast a large shadow over crowdfunding in games, with subsequent games funded with the model having to fight against the stigma of Crowdfunded games overpromising and underdelivering.

* {{Narm}}:
** The Masterclass trailer seems to be trying for NarmCharm, but it misses the mark by a long shot and instead looks like a bad attempt to appeal to teenagers (the majority of whom wouldn't care for the game) by being TotallyRadical.
** The lack of lip-syncing can make the game's cutscenes look very awkward. Dr. White suffers from this in particular, especially when [[spoiler:he's talking to Blackwell in the post-credits scene]].
** In some console ports, the airship fight in Avi's stage with the Fort Fly goes through a few different phases -- a cannon, three Semi Maru-Rockets, and a giant Nutall. The Semi Maru-Rockets have incredibly LimitedAnimation, at around 5 frames total.
** The game's final boss is [[spoiler:''a giant corrupted flower''. Note that its first form is a creepy void monster.]] While it makes sense from a story perspective, it's still a very odd choice for the final challenge in the game. It doesn't help that it invites comparison to [[VideoGame/{{Undertale}} a certain other]] [[spoiler:[[FoulFlower evil flower]].]]
** Similar to ''VideoGame/FireEmblemFates'' which felt the need to subtitle the sound effects, this game [[http://techraptor.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/Mighty-No-9-Moaning.jpg decides to let us know]] that this moaning in pain line was ad-libbed.
** The English voice acting in general is... ''not good'', to say the least. It wasn't uncommon for people to compare the voice acting to such found in a [[Creator/FourKidsEntertainment 4Kids]] dub, and many serious scenes lose all impact when Sanda's ridiculous accent is [[LargeHam hamming things up]].

** The absorptions in and of themselves are considered by some to be this. Certain enemies being absorbed will give Beck things like faster movement, higher damage, or buster shots passing through multiple enemies, which sounds fine on paper. But it leads to TrialAndErrorGameplay and a score attack design mentality; if you don't handle enemy groups exactly how the level designers wanted you to, Beck would end up running out his buffs or not even having them at the proper times to begin with, kneecapping his progression through stages. For a successor to ''Mega Man'', where precise play was intermixed with options and tactics, it came off as far too limiting and stingy, [[UncertainAudience and not very appealing for Mega Man fans]].

Added DiffLines:

* UncertainAudience: A decent part of why this game flopped is that it just had no clue what it wanted to cater to. So it was a retro throw-back game to the ''Mega Man'' series, evidenced by the OneHitKill environment hazards and VideoGameLives, while also trying to evolve that formula into something modern, which can be seen in mechanics like the Mighty Numbers assistance in the levels as well as the Xel absorption capabilities. The new additions in the game would be a hard sell for anyone who learned about ''Mighty No. 9'' expecting it would be the traditional ''Mega Man''-like the kickstarter campaign implied it would be, while non-''Mega Man'' fans might find the appeals to nostalgia unfair in the gameplay.

Removed contradicting examples. You get one or the other, not both.

* EnjoyTheStorySkipTheGame: While the [[PlayTheGameSkipTheStory opposite]] is also frequently said, some fans of the game had a warmer reception for their characters and interactions than they did the actual gameplay. Which camp someone falls into largely depends on if they were involved with the Kickstarter campaign or not, or if they are long time VideoGame/MegaMan fans who aren't terribly interested in a story-based run-and-gun game to begin with.

* PlayTheGameSkipTheStory: Downplayed. The gameplay is serviceable at best and buggy at worst, but nobody really cares about the story, due to it throwing off the pacing with the length of the cutscenes, the banter being distracting during stages, and the characters not being particularly compelling or interesting.

** Ray's version of Countershade's weapon turns her invisible and invincible to enemies while the button is held. The downside is that you can't attack and its energy regen is insanely slow... but Ray can still dash, which still has the hurtbox attached to it and is still invincible to CollisionDamage. Pair this up with the fact that killing enemies restores weapon energy, and Ray trivializes levels while being mostly invincible, so long as there are enemies to kill.

** The conversations between White, Sanda, and Call are highly unpopular not only for being unskippable, but for often getting you killed. This is especially the case in Seismic's level, where Call in particular likes to speak up at just the right time for her text box to cover some ''highly'' picky jumps. This goes doubly if not triply for boss fights; in which the text and audio will mess up your pattern recognition and concentration. Especially if those bosses have one-hit kills!
** For some, it's the Mighty Numbers assistance. After you beat a level, the Mighty Number from that one will appear in the stage of the boss who that weapon is weak to and provide help. The problem is that it completely spoils the weakness loop (although many people would have already looked for it online, or even on the official strategy guide), and for those who don't mind that, the assists themselves are pitiful most of the time due to being confined to one-time encounters per stage. Some standout examples are Cryosphere removing some near-useless background enemies, Brandish removing some ''actually useless'' foreground enemies, and Countershade altering a cutscene slightly.

Pyrogen's fight is an extremely bad offender, since his TurnsRed gives him a OneHitKO and the player needs to hear his voice lines to be able to predict what move he's going to do.

** Seismic's weapon is a charge attack where Beck turns into a bulldozer and then goes straight forward. Aside from [[VideoGame/MegaMan5 bad memories of the Charge Kick]], it suffers from the same issue as Pyrogen in terms of being a close-range weapon that has a much nicer alternative in Brandish, and it really doesn't help that it's [[ViolationOfCommonSense a melee weapon designed to fight a melee-focused boss]]. It does have some added effects, such as a slight speed boost and immunity to mines while active, but [[GuideDangIt most players never even notice]], and even those advantages are pretty minor when you can get a much bigger speed boost by just spamming dashes.

** The Robot Factory with its myriad of instant death traps ranging traps. One particularly devious one has multiple layers of instant death spikes, making the player use Aviator's ability to slow their descent and move to the safe hole, wrangling with momentum from conveyor belts/boxes/insta-death walls dashing; if your game has slow framerate, this section will kill you a lot. There are also multiple HoldTheLine areas where you have to floating kill waves of enemies with the other Mighty Numbers, and one problematic encounter has them fighting in the background and creating a ton of visual noise, while the tiny, difficult-to-see Pico Police[[note]]The bug-like enemies that Sanda screams at during Dynatron's level[[/note]] drop down snaking corridors of insta-death walls/floors/ceilings to leaping across pits to hit ceiling switches over insta-death floors to tight timing on activating a range of switches to turn off insta-death laser beams for only a few seconds to having to handle 3 separate mini-boss/swarm rooms before tackling a rather tough boss of 'Nameless' and its tank drones. ** [[KillItWithFire Pyrogen]] is this alongside his level mentioned below, especially considering he's the very first in the list of eight that many players are likely to face first. Until one gets a hang of his animation and sound cues (for those playing with Japanese voices, two of the sound cues are extremely similar), it almost seems like his attacks are completely random, and like any boss, a direct hit will hurt. One of his attacks leaves a trail of fire in his wake that is hard to dash over, and another releases an explosion with some severe HitboxDissonance. Halfway through his health bar, he temporarily covers himself with blue flames -- which makes his attacks even stronger, and if he happens to rush into and grab the player, he [[OneHitKill hugs Beck and releases an instant kill explosion.]]

** RAY's trailer did her no favors either. Concept art shows breasts on her figure, though hints to her gender on her form itself include the curve of her hip and her boots being high-heeled. It does not help that her design resembles [[VideoGame/MegaManX Ze]][[VideoGame/MegaManZero ro]] [[note]]Which may have been intentional; her name is similar to ''rei'', the Japanese word for "zero."[[/note]], who was infamous in the fanbase for being [[DudeLooksLikeALady mistaken as a girl]].

* CriticalBacklash: As years pass following the game's release and the emotions surrounding its failure have begun to subside, re-evaluations of ''Mighty No. 9'' have shifted the narrative surrounding the game from "the biggest disappointment of the decade" to "[[SoOkayItsAverage a fairly middling game]] marred by [[OvershadowedByControversy terrible publicity]]". While the public history surrounding the game's TroubledProduction, infamous marketing, and levels of developer confidence followed by crashing public disappointment are still pretty hard to disassociate from ''Mighty No. 9'', those who play the game today may find it to just be a mediocre, but otherwise pretty harmless platformer with ''Mega Man'' influences on its sleeve, one that probably would've just passed in the night and be nothing more had it be by anyone else. With Creator/IntiCreates managing to create [[SurprisinglyImprovedSequel a more well-received alternative]] in their spin-off/crossover series ''VideoGame/MightyGunvolt'', ''Mighty No. 9'' is being slightly more remembered for having a few good, fun ideas rather than being an unsalvagable disaster.

** Some have taken to referring to Beck himself as "The New Bomber", in lieu of a title given to [[VideoGame/MegaManClassic his spiritual predecessor]].
** Due to similarities in design, his partner Call is designated as "Not!Roll" by both fans and detractors.
*** The same could be said to other characters who have a strong resemblance to a Mega Man character, especially the ones who have not yet received official names. For example, Call's motorbike dog is called by fans as "Not!Rush".
** Call E has been dubbed "Echo" by fans wishing for the design to appear in the game in some capacity. The design would eventually be used ''VideoGame/MightyGunvoltBurst'' as one of Call's alternate outfits.

Had to be well received at the time, which the final product was not.

* CondemnedByHistory: This game was hyped up and eagerly anticipated because it was filling a void left by not having a ''Mega Man 11''. But once ''VideoGame/MegaMan11'' actually released, ''Mighty No. 9'' was quickly brushed aside.
