* AudienceAlienatingPremise: The game itself has a strong following, [[CultClassic especially in retrospect]], but it's widely believed that the main reason [[AcclaimedFlop it didn't get enough sales to justify further sequel remakes]] is because of it being a [[UsefulNotes/PlayStationPortable PSP]] exclusive. In addition to the console itself having a rough start, it seems that a chunk of the console's audience looking for more realistic games didn't have much overlap with ''Franchise/MegaMan'' in general (not helped by [[AnimationAgeGhetto the game's cutesier artstyle]] and being followed up by the DarkerAndEdgier VideoGame/MegaManMaverickHunterX), many arguing that it would've found a better home on the UsefulNotes/NintendoDS.

** Roll's pre-fight dialogue with Copy Roll has a lot of IncestSubtext regarding her and Mega Man's relationship. Never mind that Mega Man and Roll are both ''designed as children and siblings''. This also goes for her interaction with Oil Man, who weirdly makes a pass at Roll, made worse as it's implied Oil Man is meant to be a bit older. This weird characterization is probably the most recognition ''Powered Up'' got in recent history, threatening the game as a whole to become CondemnedByHistory.

''Mega Man 1'', in addition to having [[EarlyInstallmentWeirdness its own idiosyncrasies to the rest of the franchise]], was definitely made as a first effort limited by a very early idea of what the [[UsefulNotes/NintendoEntertainmentSystem NES]] could do. * QuestionableCasting: Jonathan Love's performance as Proto Man is noted to be [[VocalDissonance unfittingly deep]], as while Proto Man is designed as a bit older than Mega Man, the former is still rather boyish in appearance. Funnily enough, Mega Man himself would undergo a similar situation in ''[[VideoGame/MegaMan11 11]]''.

** Also, some people didn't like the addition of {{Desperation Attack}}s for the 8 Robot Masters, though the fact that they're invincible during these attacks and frequently spam them once they get access to them adds some irritation into the mix.

* LowTierLetdown:
** Oil Man is generally considered the worst Robot Master to play as since the weapon he is limited to, the Oil Slider, is already pretty terrible, firing a short-ranged shot that will stay on the ground for a few moments if it misses an enemy and cannot be shot again until the blob disappears a few moments later. Oil Man can ride on the oil blob as a snowboard and ram into enemies but is likely to hurt himself if he does. Oil Man's special ability to not slide on oil is pretty much useless outside of his own stage and is redundant with Ice Man's ability to not slide on ice, only without a useful weapon and its abilities to work off of.

I don't know what most of this entry is trying to say. Several of the Robot Masters get special abilities to give them some edge so I'm just going to narrow the entry down to Oil Man and tweak Mega.

* TierInducedScrappy: Any of the Robot Masters, simply because they're basically all a more limited version of Mega Man who can't switch weapons to fit the situation, AND have a unique weakness each on top of that. Oil Man is by far the most difficult character to play as, being as he's both got the least practical weapon to use (limited to one drop of oil on screen at the time, the drop itself only does one damage to EVERYTHING including Elec Man, and using it as a board does good damage but almost guarantees that you'll take damage in return) and is weak to fire, one of the more difficult battles even under normal circumstances. Mega Man plays like a top tier character almost by default, simply due to his versatility and lack of weakness (though Proto Man is the easiest character by far, considering his gun hits every weakness and is more mobile than Mega Man to begin with).
** It was thought that Oil Man is the weakest character in the game until one realises that Mega - the humanoid helper robot form of Mega Man - should take the cake; he only uses kicks - quite adept and strong at that - until you also realise that as a melee form of fighting, Mega would have to get very close to his opponent in order for his kicks to do some serious damage; quite an awesome feat defeating the various robot enemies, Robot Masters and Dr. Wily with the advantage of ranged attacks.
* Roll and Mega are the only two playable characters in the game who employ melee attacks; subverted by Oil Man with his Oil Slider but one can digress. Guess who has the better melee advantage.....?
* Just by observing their movements and behaviour you can assume that certain MMPU characters have a great affinity for sports:
Mega - Soccer/Football

Oil Man - Skateboarding

Bomb Man - Basketball

Ice Man - Figure Skating

Guts Man - Weightlifting

Cut Man - Gymnastics
* Cut Man is the only Robot Master in the game where Mega Man cannot use his special weapon that is weak against him - DIRECTLY.

As we know, Cut Man is weak against Super Arm / Guts Blocks attacks; and as Mega Man cannot create Guts Blocks out of thin air unlike Guts Man in his Playable Mode he has to rely on any Guts Blocks available in the area he's in so technically his Super Arm weapon is moot against him.

In fact, the charge shot here can break enemy guards at half power and at full power can go through walls.
