Added DiffLines:

* DiagnosedByTheAudience: Many of the characters appear to have...something going on upstairs, at least. Euronymous acts tough and commanding but is shown to be suffering from some PTSD following . Varg's awkwardness around others, inability to feel compassion or friendship, and literal-mindedness about being "evil" could be taken as him being on the autism spectrum. Faust claims he is interested in stabbing someone to death, and exhibits no remorse following Magne's murder, which could indicate sociopathy. As these characters are based on real people, this is never brought up in-universe and it is left to the viewer to judge whether mental divergence plays a role in any character's actions; the only exception is Dead, who is both shown and stated to be suffering from depression and PTSD.

* QuestionableCasting: Many black metal purists have been critical over the casting, especially with Rory Culkin as Euronymous and most of the cast NotEvenBotheringWithTheAccent.

* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: The film itself could have focused on Mayhem's influence in the Norway scene, but it solely focuses on Mayhem. The same could be said with the film showing Euronymous's family dealing with their son's antics (in particular with his little sister), but not much is shown.

Not a YMMV trope.

* TakeThat: The film seems to do one towards Varg in regards to the acting department considering Emory Cohen, a Jewish actor is playing Varg Vikernes, a white supremacist. Varg himself took noticed and Understatement wasn't impressed.

That's more of a gush about how fitting the director is for a movie that tackles this series of events. As an example of This Is Your Premise On Drugs, it comes off as weak at best and shoehorned at worst.

* ThisIsYourPremiseOnDrugs: A movie about BlackMetal made by music video director Jonas Åkerlund. If that wasn't on any drugs, who knows.

* SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped: Lords of Chaos essentially states bluntly that the Norway black metal scene wasn't filled with MisanthropeSupreme, but a collective of teenagers wanting to be edgy for the sake of edgy, showing while they did screwed up things, they were humans who didn't realize what they were getting themselves into.

** Detractors to those who despise the movie will admit to just seeing Emroy Cohen as Varg just to piss off Vikernes for how he hated the idea of a Jewish actor playing him.

It's to explain Euronymous' foot wounds.

* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: spoiler: Varg randomly making himself chocolate milk as Euro struggles to open the door of his apartment after he was stabbed. All it really does is serve a CallBack to earlier in the movie of Hellhammer teasing Varg by asking him if he "wants milk" after he rejected Euro's offer for beer.
