** The first trailer featured the ArcadeFire song "My Body is a Cage" as covered by PeterGabriel. The lyrics start with: ''My body is a cage / That keeps me from dancing / With the one I love / But my mind holds the key.'' At the end of the film [[spoiler:John's Earth body keeps him from being on Mars with Dejah (as he's essentially faxed to Mars and gains a duplicate body there), and he uses his wits to find a way to return to Mars.]]

* FridgeBrilliance: the title is simply John Carter, he doesn't really get the title of "John Carter of Mars" until the end of the film.

* FollowUpFailure: Stanton's first foray into Live-Action after two successful [[FindingNemo animated]] [[WallE films]], and so far his least well-recieved film. One wonders why advertisements didn't play up his pedigree at Pixar...

* TearJerker: As he's fighting off an entire army of Tharks, flashbacks show John [[spoiler:finding his home destroyed and his wife and daughter dead. The subsequent cuts of him burying his family paired with Michael Giacchino's score during this scene will guarantee you reaching for the tissue box.]]
** Don't forget the [[spoiler:near-DownerEnding where a Thern uses tech to send him back to earth after he threw away his own teleporter after deciding to stay on Mars. There was also his joy at returning to mars in the end.]]
** The scene where [[spoiler:John accidentally kills a Thark and he and Sola are branded. Solar already has brandings and next branding will kill her. She looks at John like she was contemplating if her keeping him was worth it. He never apologizes.]]
