** Bonnie, for being a deaf, headstrong eventual ActionGirl who inspires a lot of her older brother's more tender moments.

** Sunny, genuinely helpful J&R TokenGoodTeammate Trish, especially during her OddFriendship interactions with Bonnie.

* GeniusBonus - The morse code at the beginning of every episode spells something out, which also counts as something of a CouchGag.

* GeniusBonus - The morse code at the beginning of every episode spells something out, which also counts as something of a CouchGag.
* GrowingTheBeard: The second half of season one, in many viewer's opinions, once the characters stopped behaving like idiots, the drama became dramatic, and Emily got significantly less screentime.
* HilariousInHindsight: What is it with Creator/LennieJames and series which deal with post-apocalyptic disasters? Here it's nukes. Next time it'll be [[Series/TheWalkingDead zombies.]]
* NightmareFuel: The entire premise. No less than two dozen of America's largest cities have been completely destroyed, leading to tens of millions of deaths and leaving the country paralyzed, with communications compromised nationwide. Fallout has spread across what remains of the metropolitan areas, entire towns have lost touch with the outside world, the government is effectively destroyed, and the country has gradually fractured into multiple dissenting factions as they wrestle over the best means by which to save the remains of the union, even as a major corporate conspiracy moves to seize power.
** It's mentioned that UsefulNotes/NewYorkCity was perhaps the only target city spared from nuclear armageddon.
* OneSceneWonder: Creator/XanderBerkeley as John Smith. He only has three brief "appearances" in the entire series, two of which are just as voice over the phone and in the third he doesn't even speak [[spoiler:when disguised as a medic]]. Yet he's still absolutely captivating as he finally explains who was really behind the nuclear attacks and why.
* TheScrappy: Emily quickly became this.
* ShipToShipCombat: Jake/Heather vs. Jake/Emily. Even the producers of the show had their favorite -- Jake/[[spoiler:Emily]] won.
* TearJerker: Stanley saying goodbye to Bonnie for the last time.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter:
** Both New Bern TokenGoodTeammate Ted and reformed ConArtist Maggie Mullen disappear from the show (and from the same episode) with no closure, despite making decent impressions on the fanbase.
** Hawkins' teammate Cheung is a HeroOfAnotherStory while working within [=ASA=] territory. This has the potential for a minor subplot, but he doesn't physically appear in the show until the finale and then is anticlimactically gunned down without receiving much characterization.
** April's [[spoiler:DeathByChildbirth along with her baby]] is pretty disappointing, given how many fans wanted to see Eric dealing with fatherhood while struggling with his love triangle.
