* AudienceAlienatingPremise: The series is based on the writings of Joseph Smith. As a result, it can alienate a lot of people.
** Even if you don't really know anything about the Church of Latter Day Saints, Christians as a whole are ''really'' on the fence about their status as Christians, and this results in a lot of friction.
** Then you have their checkered history with race and polygamy. If you know even a little bit about the church, you know about that, and learning that an author is trying to whitewash the books that justified and started all that can be whiffy.
** And if you know a lot about the church, learning that Card is playing all of Smith's racism and misogyny, alongside the church's occasional genocide, painfully straight and trying to present it as good and justified (all of the fake history Joseph Smith made up is true!, forced marriages are good, actually! Yes, the Diggers [brown-skinned people] are pretty much all evil, but [[YouAreACreditToYourRace there are some good ones]]), whoof.

*FridgeHorror: As far as was portrayed, at the end of ''Earthfall'', all of the females left with Nafai and the Skypeople. So where did Elemak and his followers get females to sustain their numbers enough to be a threat in ''Earthborn''? Kidnapping and rape are the obvious answers. Though it's possible some of the female Nafari became dissatisfied with him and defected.
