** This only applies to ExpandedUniverse, not game canon. Dr. Halsey is the closest to GreyAndGreyMorality within the games and even she is basically beyond reproach since the only thing that would make her actions questionable was the fact she never explained why she did things because it is AllInTheManual.

deleting Unpleasable Fanbase as it has the Flame Bait banner.

* UnpleasableFanbase: When it comes to [[strike:discussions]] [[FlameWar Flame Wars]] about Halo, this trope is present almost '''All The Time'''. The derision leveled towards [[TheyChangedItNowItSucks any change]] and/or [[ItIsTheSameNowItSucks any lack of change]] is nearly endless. Even all the aspects the fans wanted Bungie to change (or keep) are being complaining about. For instance: When Halo 2 came out, fans screamed TheyChangedItNowItSucks. When Halo 3 came out, fans screamed ItIsTheSameNowItSucks. When HaloReach, they chanted both and much more at the same time. It doesn't matter what Bungie does for this franchise, fans will still complain.
** The particularly vocal elements of the ''{{Halo}}'' fanbase had such a violently negative reaction to the inclusion of ''bosses'' in ''Halo 2'' that there were no boss-like enemies in ''{{Halo}} 3.'' Naturally, ''{{Halo}}"' fans then complained about the lack of a decisive confrontation with the Gravemind.
** Not to mention the flame wars raging over the Assault Rifle. In Halo 1, people thought it was worthless. In Halo 2, people wanted it back. In Halo 3, now that they had it back, they complained about how it sucked and was weak and inaccurate.
** And don't even bring up dual wielding unless you want to have flames intense enough to melt your monitor, especially since they took it out in ODST and Reach.
** Similar with the Battle Rifle. It was a game breaker in Halo 2 and people cried out for Bungie to remove it. In Halo 3, they complained about how the Battle Rifle had been [[{{Nerf}} nerfed]]. Then, there was more crying in ODST about how there was no Battle Rifle. Then in the reach Beta, people were outraged over its omission, resulting in groups literally going through the forum indices and reporting Battle Rifle vs DMR (Designated Marksman Rifle) threads.

Especially on ''The Escapist'', thanks to ZeroPunctuation (who has openly said he didn't really enjoy Halo, but said it was average) in which the series is frequently complained about ripping off stuff [[SeinfeldIsUnfunny it actually popularized or was done on Marathon]] (Which was also done by Bungie), is criticized for its FanDumb, has ''extremely'' subjective opinions thrown at it, and stuff that's flat out contradicted by the games. * HateDom: Halo's KillerApp status for the Xbox brand has not gone well with Playstation, Nintendo, and PC fanboys, and each have been hell bent on lambasting this franchise to the death.
** So much so that the hatedom is getting its own hatedom - people who hate on ''Halo'' for unjustified causes are often called out on doing it simply because they think it makes them cool. And also questions such as, "You're hating on [game X] for ''that''? I'll bet you're one of those people who hates on Halo, too," start to arise.
** [[ItsPopularNowItSucks Especially thanks to it's popularity]], there are quite a few reviewers (although a minority considering that Halo gets a lot of universal praise) that seem hell bent on labeling Halo as TheAntichrist, and they can get a fandom for it. ZeroPunctuation for example, quite often finds a way to bash Halo and proclaim it as one of the Worst Games of All Time. When he releases his review of the game (obviously filled with [[ComplainingAboutShowsYouDontLike Complaining about a game that he doesn't like]]), saying [[AndTheFandomRejoiced And The Hatedom Rejoiced]] is something of an understatement.
*** Aaaand he sorta liked ''[[HaloReach Reach]]'', judging on just the campaign. Has the universe imploded yet?
*** He went a bit farther in his "[=Best/Worst=] of 2010" video:
--->The ''worst'' game of the year, a game less substantial than [[UncomfortableElevatorMoment a fart in a lift]] but no less unpleasant for those caught in its wafting cage, a game that killed its franchise so thoroughly that the only acceptable sequel would be a box containing an apology letter and some chocolates... I refer, of course, to ''Halo: Reach''. ({{Beat}}) ''Burned!'' I had you going for a second there, didn't I?
** [[PennyArcade Tycho and Gabe]] took some potshots at ''Halo'' fairly early on, though their opinion seemed to have softened when ''Halo 3'' was released. It basically amounts to the idea that ''Halo'' is for drunken fratboys or twelve year olds, an idea which persists to this day. [[{{Irony}} Not that that stops them from playing them though]].

** This is one of the reasons for the PC fanboy hating noted in the {{Hatedom}} entry, at least amongst older PC fanboys - originally, Halo: Combat Evolved was supposed to be a ''PC'' game first. That this led to a backlash when the Halo series ultimately became, as the main page says, 'one of the premiere franchises exclusive to the Xbox' is, perhaps, understandable, especially when it was made clear by porting disasters.

* BestLevelEver: In Halo 1, there is The Assault on the Control Room, where you finally get to rampage all over the covenant with vehicles. Halo 2 has The Gravemind (not the [[CosmicHorror Thing made]] [[EldritchAbomination of corpses]]. Here' you get to rampage through what is effectively the convanent capital city gunning down everyone in your way in one long bloodbath while chasing down the resident BigBad. Oh yeah, and partway through, some of the enemies start [[EnemyCivilWar killing each other]]. Oh yeah, and there is so much SceneryPorn that you're either killing something or looking like a view straight out of a FinalFantasy CGI cutscene. Halo 3 has two; Tsavo Highway, which is going on a vehicle rampage against the covenant. The other one is a level called "The Covenant". At its climax, you get to rampage through enemy banshees and [[TankGoodness two giant enemy tank walkers!]] ODST has the Police Headquarters level which ends with an awesome last stand and an epic cutscene.
** Halo 1's Silent Cartographer level begins with an assault on a Covenant-held beach, and once that's over it does a fantastic job of providing the illusion that you've got a whole island to explore however you like. The Silent Cartographer is such a highly-regarded mission that the ''HalfLife2'' mod ''MinervaMetastasis'' [[http://www.blog.radiator.debacle.us/2009/01/mod-auteurs-adam-foster-cargo-cult.html has been described as essentially a "love letter" to that one level]]. Also, the first game's Two Betrayals level climaxes in a BigBadassBattleSequence featuring a three-way fight between the Chief, the Covenant (with two Wraith tanks at their disposal!), and the Flood.

* SeinfeldIsUnfunny - Upon its original release, ''Halo'''s combat was praised for its incorporation of three elements in particular: a two-weapon limit, rechargeable shields, and dedicated buttons for instantly-accessible grenade throws and melee attacks. Individually, all these features had been seen before ''Halo'', but they were far from predominant, especially when combined together in a single game like that. Now, they are pretty standard genre conventions among both console and PC FPSs, so these days it's common to hear the ''Halo'' series criticized for being "generic" rather than praised for these contributions.

* CompleteMonster: Besides some of the Covenant, the ''Halo 3: ODST'' audio-files have Police Commissioner Kinsler, who [[spoiler:tries to capture and [[AttemptedRape rape]] Sadie multiple times, has the city Superintendent shut down, hindering rescue work and thus likely resulting in hundreds of unnecessary deaths, casually orders the execution of Dr. Endesha (Sadie's father), has his [[DirtyCop troops]] [[MoralEventHorizon open fire on a tightly-packed group of civilians]] who were trying to get to safety in his train car, and other things I can't remember at the moment. The last of those acts gets him killed, when Vergil opens the train doors, allowing the [[TorchesAndPitchforks angry mob]] to rush in and literally [[KarmicDeath tear him apart]]]].
** The Rookie finds graffiti throughout New Mombasa that more-or-less says Kinsler is a monster too.
*** Two other examples are Ripa Moramee and the Prophet of Truth. Moramee's a heartless psychopath who treats other soldiers as cannon fodder and takes pride in hurting and maiming others (during his final battle with Forge he deliberately beats the shit out of him while mocking him.) Truth sets the Elites up to die after setting up Regret to die, starts a war that kills countless innocents just to keep his power, and after coldly murdering Miranda Keyes he forces Johnson to activate the Halos while MOCKING HIM AND CALLING HIS PEOPLE WEAK AT THE SAME TIME (referring to how Miranda hesitated.) [[spoiler: Both monsters meet appropriate deaths. Moramee is goaded into putting himself in range of Forge's knife, and then gets ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice with a knife and a sword. Truth watches as John, Thel Vadam and the Flood overwhelm his army, gets infected, and after being forced to watch John shut down the Halos (which ends his 27 year long plans) He gets ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice by Thel Vadam, the very individual he exploited in the second game.]]
* ContinuityDrift: Halo canon has been experiencing this. YourMileageMayVary whenever if some of the retcons are justified or not.
* CrowningMomentOfAwesome: Very many, ''especially'' in the third game.
** Some can't go unlisted: [[spoiler:Driving at ridiculously high speeds through the ruined Pillar of Autumn it explodes around you and the Flood close in from every direction, trying to outrun the reactor meltdown that will destroy all of Halo,]] and surfing a gigantic bomb through space into the core of a Covenant capital ship certainly qualify.
** ''Halo Evolutions'' has quite a few but none of them beat [[spoiler: Admiral Cole wiping out several hundred Covenant capital ships by turning a gas giant into a sun in his so-called "last stand."]]
** "Die? Didn't you know? Spartans never die."
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzBG3da97i8 The Battle Begins]].
* CrowningMomentOfFunny: In the short story "Midnight in the ''Heart of Midlothian''", the lone surviving ODST has managed to trick the Covenant into reactivating the onboard AI, Mo Ye.
---> '''Mo Ye''': Self-Destruct sequence initiated. Four minutes and counting.
---> ''The Covenant begin evacuating rapidly''
---> '''Mo Ye''': I'm kidding. There's no need for any countdown whatsoever.
---> ''[[OhCrap The Elite blinked]]''
---> ''* boom* ''
* CrowningMusicOfAwesome: '''And how!'''. In all likelihood, the MostTriumphantExample for First Person Shooters.
** Hell, I don't think there is one piece of music in this series that doesn't fall into this!
** The option to adjust the volume of the music separately from other audio is a technical accreditation requirement for Xbox and Xbox 360 games, much like achievements. ''Halo'' games have a special waiver for this requirement, because the music is just that good.
* {{Epileptic Trees}} (See: WMG/{{Halo}})
** Many of the people at the [[http://halostory.bungie.org/ Halo Story Page]] are veterans at WMG, having previously been doing the same thing with the {{Marathon}} games.
* DemonicSpiders: Jackal Snipers, Drones, Stealth Elites, Ranger Elites, Flood Stalker and Ranged forms. And to top it off, Flood Combat Forms in part 2 and 3 on Legendary, maybe Heroic. As usual, they overwhelm you by swarming from above, but with fewer places to hide, and now they can melee while wielding a weapon; a direct melee hit from them is instantly fatal on these difficulties. Flood Infection forms in these games can [[MookMaker resurrect ungibbed corpses]], [[TransformationTrauma grotesquely transform]] live victims in real-time in part 3, and are instant death if they ''touch'' you with your shields down (unlike the first game where you had a chance to shake them off).
** In ''Halo Wars'' multiplayer, Gauss Hogs are this, with Gunner/Grenadier Hogs only being Goddamned Bats.
** ''Halo 3: ODST'' introduces two new types of Demonic Spiders: Engineers and Drone Majors. The Engineers have the annoying habit of flying high above the battlefield while broadcasting an overshield to their allies in the area. They can only be easily killed with Sniper or energy weapons. The Drone Major sports recharging energy shields AND rapid-fire Brute plasma rifles. Did we mention that Drones are already almost impossible to hit due to their small size and the way in which they erratically fly around the screen? Bungie, you are NOT NICE PEOPLE!!!
*** It's telling that Drones were pulled from Firefight in ''Reach''.
* EarWorm: ''Duh-da-daa, duh-da-daa, duh-da-daaaa, da-da-da-duh-duh-duh-duh....''

* FanHater: Be prepared to take alot of flames [[{{Understatement}} (and i mean a lot of flames)]] if you proclaim to be a Halo fan.
* FanDumb and HateDumb are very prevalent when it comes to Halo in message boards. We won't list examples. This page is already filled with them.

* HateDumb: Perhaps an even ''bigger'' form of "dumb" surrounding the Halo Franchise is the massive HateDumb, specifically because it often crosses over with the ''[[{{Understatement}} massive]]'' FanDumb of ''HalfLife'' and even ''SystemShock'' and ''CallOfDuty''. Especially on ''The Escapist'', thanks to ZeroPunctuation (who has openly said he didn't really enjoy Halo, but said it was average) in which the series is frequently complained about ripping off stuff [[SeinfeldIsUnfunny it actually popularized or was done on Marathon]] (Which was also done by Bungie), is criticised for its FanDumb, has ''extremely'' subjective opinions thrown at it, and stuff that's flat out contradicted by the games. (ie; the misconception that Master Chief is actually a Space Marine; playing the story mode of games can tell you otherwise.)
* {{Misblamed}}: Halo's userbase has been misblamed for the creation of the "juvenile and unfriendly" gamer. Apparently people haven't heard of the theory of {{GIFT}}, which has been in existence long before Halo was even thought of. Halo just brought the issue to light if anything.

to:

* FetishFuel - Cortana. 'Nuff said.
* FranchiseZombie: It was going to end with the second game, but Microsoft made them stretch it out. There have been four new games since, again, mostly due to Microsoft.
* GeniusBonus: Most of the UNSC rifles have a [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullpup bullpup]] design, meaning the magazine is mounted behind the trigger and grip.
* HypeBacklash: Quite a few people tend to hype the next upcoming Halo game to seemly unbelievable and unrealistic levels. Not surprisingly when the game comes out, they were let down.
(ie; the misconception that Master Chief is actually a Space Marine; playing the story mode of games can tell you otherwise.)
* InternetBackdraft: Whatever forums you visit, don't start a ''Halo'' thread. Even if you're neutral about the franchise, you'll still attract lovers, haters, and trolls.
* MissedMomentOfAwesome: Y'know that 'Believe' ad campaign, featuring a massive battle between the brutes and humans that would be the turning point in the war for Earth? Where the hell was that during the game?
** For reasons of avoiding leaks, the ad agency who created the 'Memorial' add campaign was not given any details of the plot of ''Halo 3'' beyond what was already publically known, though they have clearly ShownTheirWork that they were otherwise well-versed in the series general mythology. Essentially they were given carte blanche to create their own little story about the last and most desperate days of the war between humanity and the Covenant.
** No Gravemind boss battle?
* MoralEventHorizon - The Prophet of Truth crosses this after killing Keyes, if he wasn't already a CompleteMonster, and Guilty Spark crosses over when he goes Rampant and fatally injures Johnson.
* {{Misblamed}}: Halo's userbase has been misblamed for the creation of the "juvenile and unfriendly" gamer. Apparently people haven't heard of the theory of {{GIFT}}, which has been in existence long before Halo was even thought of. Halo just brought the issue to light if anything.anything.
* NightmareFuelUnleaded: The Flood.
** The whole Covenant war could also qualify. As well as [[spoiler: the fate that befell Durga in the ''I Love Bees'' audio drama.]]
*** Or [[spoiler: what appeared to be the "kid" AI torn to pieces by the main AI in ILB.]]
** The transmissions from Cortana, especially on the titular mission, where she goes rampant for a bit before you rescue her.
* HighOctaneNightmareFuel: The report listing the possible side-effects of the augmentation process is not pleasant.
* NarmCharm. 343 Guilty Spark, and Bungie knows it. Even when he gets [[RedEyesTakeWarning red-eyed pissed off]], he's sort of cute.
-->'''343 Guilty Spark:''' UNACCEPTABLE! UNACCEPTABLE!
* PortingDisaster: A strange variant with the original, in that it was mostly competently converted to the PC in and of itself and reasonably well-received, but delayed for so very, very long that by the time it came out, the competition was far ahead in every aspect, and it really stood out how very unremarkable and average it was compared to other PC {{First Person Shooter}}s. ''Halo 2'' fared much worse, in that even though its graphics were hopelessly outdated when it finally came out on the PC, it was [[WhatAnIdiot released as a Windows Vista exclusive to convince people of the technological wonder of DirectX 10]].
** To add even more insult to injury, the game doesn't even actually ''use'' DirectX 10; it just runs a check as to whether you have it or not (unsurprising given that it was made for the first-gen Xbox, which used the equivalent of DirectX 8.1!). A simple hacker-made patch allows it to run normally in Windows XP.
* TheScrappy - Let's face it, no one's really cared too much for the Drones. [[BugWar Sure,]] [[BigCreepyCrawlies they might]] [[BeePeople look kind of cool]], but just about everyone hates [[DemonicSpiders fighting them.]] They're the only Covenant species not to have a main character in any of the books (or even any named ones), they didn't even show up in Halo Wars, and the [[AndTheFandomRejoiced fans rejoiced]] when Bungie announced they won't show up in Halo: Reach's Firefight mode.
* TheScrappy: It would be hard to find someone who likes 343 Guilty Spark.
* ScrappyLevel: The Library in ''Halo'', High Charity in ''Halo 2'', Cortana in ''Halo 3''; levels where the Flood is the primary opponent seem to be the standard.
** Regret. Regret. Regret. Tons of Sniper Jackals (and you thought Outskirts and Metropolis were bad), sometimes in cramped spaces, plus the sadistic gondola rides, designed to make you a sitting duck for Drones, Banshees, Rangers, and {{BFG}}-wielding Grunts. And ThatOneBoss, the titular Prophet. You'll regret this, Bungie.
* ScrappyMechanic - [[GunsAkimbo Dual-wielding]]. Much was made of the new ability to use two guns at the same time in ''Halo 2''... especially when players realized the Magnum ate through shields when paired up. As Bungie tries to give guns, grenades and melees equal standing in combat, they quickly responded: first by nerfing the Magnum in ''2'', then by making it so dual-wielded weapons did less damage in ''3''. ''ODST'' and ''Reach'' both only feature single-wield guns.
* SeinfeldIsUnfunny - Upon its original release, ''Halo'''s combat was praised for its incorporation of three elements in particular: a two-weapon limit, rechargable shields, and dedicated buttons for instantly-accessible grenade throws and melee attacks. Individually, all these features had been seen before ''Halo'', but they were far from predominant, especially when combined together in a single game like that. Now, they are pretty standard genre conventions among both console and PC FPSs, so these days it's common to hear the ''Halo'' series criticised for being "generic" rather than praised for these contributions.
* TearJerker - [[spoiler: Johnson's death]], with the saddest music piece ever concieved by the soundtrack composers. :_( :_( :_(
** [[spoiler: The Master Chief meeting the girl he made a ChildhoodMarriagePromise with during the First Battle of New Mombasa, only to realize that he can't tell her without compromising the UNSC and the fate of humanity.]]
** From Evolutions: [[spoiler: "Henry can have my ice cream."]]
** From ''Contact Harvest'', the epilogue.
--->[[spoiler:'''Mack:'''But this winter won't last, darlin'. Not forever. And when new hands set to tending this earth they'll till my pieces under. Grind them into the veins of gold I've laid. Then the roots of all they plant will wind around us -- keeping us close -- for an eternal summer that will not fade.]]
** Jorge's goodbye.
* UnpleasableFanbase: When it comes to [[strike:discussions]] [[FlameWar Flame Wars]] about Halo, this trope is present almost '''All The Time'''. When Halo 2 came out, fans screamed TheyChangedItNowItSucks.
In Halo 3, now that they had it back, they complained about how it sucked and was weak and innacurate.
** And don't even bring up dual weilding unless you want to have flames intense enough to melt your monitor, especially since they took it out in ODST and Reach.
