* AudienceAlienatingPremise: The premise is not one that holds up well to FridgeHorror. It takes place {{in a world}} with SwappedRoles taken to the extreme: [[TeenageWasteland kids have all authority, and grown-ups must abide by their rules.]] Despite this, people age and develop as they do in RealLife. While [[WebVideo/TheMysteriousMrEnter the author]] is aware of this problem readers have, he makes it clear that he doesn't want to pen the DarkerAndEdgier ''Literature/LordOfTheFlies''-style {{Deconstruction}} that everyone's minds head towards, nor does he want to [[VoodooShark bog down the story to explain how such a world could work]], and simply implores potential readers to take the story for what it is at face value. As a result, the crowd funding campaign for the pilot was a complete bomb.

For what it's worth, while Enter hasn't abandoned the project, he later admitted that it was unrealistic to expect a TV show budget for a project like this.

* OvershadowedByControversy: Growing Around is known less for it's actual contents or merits and more for being created by [[WebVideo/TheMysteriousMrEnter one of the most controversial critics]] on Website/YouTube and the [=GoFundMe=] asking for $350,000 to make an animated pilot that failed miserably.

* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: Some of it's critics argue that embracing the massive amounts of FridgeHorror within the setting and going with a DarkerAndEdgier, ''Literature/LordOfTheFlies''-esque, dystopic tone would actually make it more interesting, in spite of Mr. Enter wishing for the audience to take the setting at face value.

* DesignatedMonkey: Linda/Autumn. She is frequently ridiculed by the other characters for her disinterest in childish activities and supposed lack of imagination. Many feel the harsh punishments Sally subjects her to are more disturbing than funny and it is not hard to see the woman as a victim of how her society is run.

* DesignatedMonkey: Various characters will have this role at one point.
** Whenever Autumn gets the short end of the stick, it is because of her apathy towards what children like. She gets a little better each time.
** Max is proof that the apple doesn't seem to fall far enough from the tree. He has bad things happen to him on his extra birthdays despite Sally's good intentions, was forced to play her henchman in a game of superheroes, mocked by Steve for liking something girly, and puts up with his employees' antics on a near-daily basis.
** Sally also seems to inherited some of Autumn's misfortune. She has been accused of being an alien thanks to [[ConspiracyTheorist Niall]], lost [[CompanionCube Charmichael]] while trying to retrieve a frisbee, and found herself pet-sitting animals that would be considered more dangerous than a puppy, kitten, or pony.
** Molly is an unusual case in "Jinxed". Despite having ''several'' mishaps occur like not being allowed to talk for a week, [[ZigZaggedTrope it's balanced out with stuff like an overnight spa stay and a mountain of ice cream]].

** Sally herself also comes off as this a lot, especially in the original book, where she forces her mother to wear a humiliating outfit to school as punishment for covering up her bad grades. Linda gets rewarded for this, and Sally's behavior is never questioned.
