* DracoInLeatherPants: There's a good chunk of people who think that Anna did nothing wrong [[spoiler:when it came to the truth about [[LockedOutOfTheLoop her not knowing about her lack of magical ability]], and that [[MoralEventHorizon nearly killing her own mother]] was deserved on the latter's part for keeping the whole thing a secret with Shingetsu for about a decade.]] While that doesn't excuse her very behavior and everything that lead to those events, it really didn't help with [[spoiler:Shingetsu's seemingly apathetic way of handling the situation and Anna [[{{Retcon}} effectively being erased from the story due to magic,]]]] to the point that some people believed she bordered on being a CosmicPlaything.

** The show is also horribly paralleling to ''Series/KamenRiderRyuki'', except what happened here is [[FromBadToWorse much worse]]: In ''Ryuki'' [[spoiler:TheHeroDies in the preultimate episode, TheLancer defeated the FinalBoss and his wish granted, eventually the Rider Fight is no more]]; these all happens in ''Granbelm'', except [[spoiler:TheHero isn't even human, those died in the fights were RetGone, and TheLancer is doomed to be alone eternally to keep her wish stands]].

** If Suishou didn't cross it with cursing Kuon's sister Shisui into a coma and later [[spoiler: killing Kuon]], then [[spoiler: killing Mangetsu in the penultimate episode while [[LaughingMad laughing insanely]]]] definitely sealed the deal.
* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: While Shingetsu's burden of having high expectations due to her potentially high magic is understandably rough and that getting rid of said magic because of the potentially dangerous misuse that anyone can do with it is also an understandable goal to have, what started to put fans against her was the fact that [[spoiler:she basically kick-started Anna's [[StartOfDarkness spiral to]] [[AxCrazy the mess she is today]] by secretly helping her perform a technique that her mother and grandmother couldn't do out of good intentions...which led to Anna believing that she was more powerful than she was. That ended up making Anna's own mother and Shingetsu telling her that she could never beat the latter without telling her why out of their love for her, making Anna think that they valued Shingetsu more than her. This went on for about a decade before the truth was finally spoken...with [[{{Matricide}} nearly disastrous results]]]] During [[spoiler:the battle between her and Anna]] in the next episode, we're shown that [[spoiler:she does feel remorse for her actions and that she wants to make amends,]] but what rallied fans against her even more was that [[spoiler:for all that she said about loving Anna and not wanting to put any burdens on her,]] it was her utter lack of understanding that for all her complaints about her magic, she never really understood that [[spoiler:what she had was ''all'' that Anna had ever wanted, and to see that in the process of being thrown away forever because she personally didn't like it felt like a slap to Anna's entire reason for living. It really didn't help that her method of getting Anna to back out of the GRANBELM and realize that there was more to life than being a mage was to throw the huge differences between their strengths in her face.]]

* AudienceAlienatingPremise: [[CultClassic Those who watch it past a first-episode check tend to love it]], but mecha fans tend to cringe at [[WhatMeasureIsANonBadass the studio-mandated chibi mechs]], and magical girl fans, already a divided bunch, largely avoided it; fans of the traditional fare [[DarknessInducedAudienceApathy thought it was yet another]] DarkerAndEdgier MagicalGirlGenreDeconstruction, and fans of ''those'' series [[TrueArtIsAngsty were put off by the hope, love, and relative lack of bodies]] (there are some character deaths, but ''LightNovel/MagicalGirlRaisingProject'' this ain't).

** This show got compared to Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica pretty much instantly. Fast forward a couple of episode, and we got the confirmation that the character with [[Creator/AoiYuuki Madoka's voice]] is the BigBad. For extra irony points, she is a PsychoLesbian, which almost sounds like a TakeThat to Madoka's infamous AmbiguouslyLesbian cast.
