He isn't even malicious or incompetent about it; he flies the ship well, treats his crew with a fair amount of respect and professionalism (even inviting both Fry and Zoidberg to dine and drink with him at "the captain's table"), fondly calls Fry his first mate, and takes Fry's increasingly hostile insults in stride. (Which, honestly, is better than how Bender ''normally'' treats people.) The worst he does is eventually fly sober due to his depression over ''Fry's'' jealousy-fueled rejection.
