** Her initial obsession with Benjamin also raises a few questions, as it goes beyond just lingering feelings from their time together as children and into borderline denial at times.

* HarsherInHindsight: One of Tankman's game over quotes in the base game is "No wonder [[Boyfriend's]] parents hate you". Here, Bf's parents really do hate him, and in a far more disturbing way.

** All of Benjamin and Pico’s interactions show them as a loving, stable couple despite everything, especially with Pico repeatedly telling Benjamin to stand up for himself and not letting himself be manipulated by his AbusiveParents.
** After Benjamin reveals what The Fairests did to him to the public, everyone in the crowd looks worried for Benjamin, horrified and disgusted by his parents' actions, and a few looking ready to kick their asses.

* OneTrueThreesome: There are people who ship Benjamin, Pico and Grace together in this matter, mostly from people who aren't happy that Grace is ''not'' a relationship with Benjamin, either ignoring or not taking into account that it wouldn't work out in canon because Benjamin is gay.

** Boyfriend's counterpart, real name [[AdaptationalNameChange Benjamin Fairest]], was subjected to the [[AbusiveParents abusive behavior]] of his parents, the Fairests. He suffers from [=PTSD=], anxiety and panic attacks, and even hallucinations in the form of [[BattleInTheCenterOfTheMind Soft Monster]]. When he finally GrewASpine and escaped from his AbusiveParents, they chased him down over the course of months. No wonder everyone wants to give the poor guy a hug...

** "Repressed" involves the first appearance of the Dad Monster, a manifestation of Benjamin's repressed memories and fears of Father Fairest's abuses. The Soft Monster is enveloped by smoke, hinting that Father Fairest's cigar wasn't just for [[PlayingWithFire stress]] [[WouldHurtAChild relief]]. The atmosphere is figuratively and literally haunting, and it's clear Benjamin just wants the memory to end so he can go back to Pico.
** "Genesis" is a somber mixture of this and CatharsisFactor. Coming down from the climax of "Hope," [[spoiler:in which Benjamin outed his parents for abusing him and publicly disowned them,]] the monster appears, and Benjamin, still burning with his newfound defiance, [[spoiler:lets his guts spill through a mixture of tears and determination, culminating in an ear-splitting CatharticScream that's completely independent of button input.]] It's particularly touching for anyone who's managed to overcome the trauma of abuse. [[spoiler:By the end, the monster fades, and Benjamin is smiling with tears in his eyes, finally having reconciled with his inner demons.]]
** "A Childhood Friend" is the most emotionally-charged week of the mod, on top of being the only one with 100% original songs. Grace appears, trying to win Benjamin back, and, while the first song is relatively playful, the second and third songs are increasingly desperate and strained, with "Stay" interweaving its somberness with the relaxed, "lo-fi"-esque tone of the song masterfully, while "It's Complicated" has all pretense of "happy ending" whittling away note by note. It's made abundantly clear that Benjamin isn't the only one who's suffered in his life, and the worst part? Grace is a "successful" case in the eyes of her parents.

* TearJerker: The story is about Benjamin surviving the physical and psychological abuse of family members. It's bound to tug a few heartstrings along the way:

* BrokenBase: The story; either you're interested in the game's darker tone that deals with some relatable issues, alongside a great showing of the Pico x Boyfriend ship with the two having a loving relationship and helping each other, or [[AngstAversion you dislike the story for how unrepentantly (sometimes needlessly) dark and depressing it is]] with it's subject matter, alongside how much it pushes the Pico x Boyfriend ship, to the point of [[AdaptationalSexuality making Benjamin gay]] and giving Grace a dosage of AdaptationalVillainy just to sink any possibility of BF x GF.

** At the second song of Week 5 after Benjamin reveals what The Fairests did to him to the public and when they show their true colours … all of the Fairests fans look worried, horrified and disgusted by what they heard … with so many people now on his side… Benjamin and Pico no longer have to run and hide anymore … they are both finally safe thanks to the general public now having their backs.
