The trick with summoners is to use the summoned Phantom to draw enemy fire, just put it in range of an enemy you want to separate from the pack and watch as it runs away from the rest of the group after the Phantom where you can, with proper planning, flank the bastard and take them down easily. Using this trick, you can pick off an entire army pretty quickly. Also, the Phantoms can be used to weaken stronger enemies before you sic your actual units on them. Sure, the summoners may have poor stats, but using this trick, you really don't need them to fight directly.
