Introducing Masaomi Kida to his follower Saki Mikajima she would have Saki form a romantic relationship with Masaomi while Izaya instigates a gang war between Masaomi’s gang, The Yellow Scarves, and The Blue Square, leaving Masaomi vulnerable, endangering Saki, and dismantling both gangs in the process. Also a member of The Dollars, Izaya has recruited thousands into the Dollars before turning them against their leader by reveal to them his identity, Mikado Ryuugamine, allowing them to reek havoc throughout Ikebukuro. After being stabbed by "Jinnai Yodogiri", Izaya would allow himself to be capture, tricking his captors into revealing information on "Jinnai Yodogiri" before sending his newly formed group to defeat them afterwards. Also holding immense animosity for [[ArchEnemy Shizuo Heiwajima]] for not being able to manipulate him, Izaya has provoke Shizuo constantly, cost him his job, [[FrameUp frames him for murder]], manipulates a girl to kill Shizuo, and tries to kill Shizuo himself. When Shizuo manages to beat Izaya, he attempt to goad Shizuo to kill him, content that the masses witnessing Shizuo will then view him as a monster.

** Vorona is either loved by fans because she's another {{action girl}} that is a potential love interest for Shizuo or being created to [[ShipSinking sink]] the FanPreferredCouple Shizaya pairing as well as [[RonTheDeathEater a bitch that only wants to kill Shizuo and will break his heart to do so]], [[spoiler: nevermind the fact Izaya actively tries to kill Shizuo late into the light novels and Vorona instead saves Shizuo.]]

* FanPreferredCouple:
** If you look on Fanfiction.Net, Deviant Art or any other poll site, you'll probably notice that Shizuo/Izaya is the most popular. Doesn't help with the ShipTease that Narita gives to bait the fangirls.
** The most popular ship with Mikado seems to be Izaya/Mikado. Either because of how Izaya gets paired with [[LauncherOfAThousandShips mostly everyone]], because of the [[HoYay subtext they have in the novels]], or both. In japanese DRRR fandom, it might actually be the second popular ship with Izaya after Shizaya.
** At least on Pixiv, Yoshimune is usually shipped with [[HoYay Izaya or Shizuo]].

** Anri is commonly paired with [[TwiceShy Mikado]], but she's also paired with [[ShipTease Masaomi]], [[FoeYay Izaya]], [[ShipsThatPassInTheNight Shizuo]], [[LesYay Celty, Erika, Saki, Haruna]], and [[WifeHusbandry Akabayashi.]]

* CompleteMonster: [[EvilTeacher Takashi Nasujima]] is a [[{{Ephebophile}} sexual predator]] known for sexually harassing his female students. His relationship with his student, Haruna Niekawa, is a notorious example, with his emotional and sexual abuse playing a large role in Haruna's [[ClingyJealousGirl deteriorating psyche]]. Transferred to Raira Academy, Nasujima would proceed to sexually harass Anri Sonohara, and when ordered to stop by Masiomi Kida, he would sneak into Anri's home, possibly to violate her. Severely injured by Shizuo Heiwajima after trying to mug him, Nasujima recovers and returns to Ikebukuro where he [[CarFu runs over Kyouhei Kadota with a car]]. Resisting Saika's control, Nasujima uses Haruna's father to lure her daughter to him before knocking them both out, where Nasujima plans to use Haruna's powers for his own purposes while stating his intentions to [[RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil rape]] Haruna right in front of her father; he then has Haruna slash everyone within Ikebukuro so that he may control their minds and take over the city, uncaring if he gets many people hurt or killed. Nasujima would then attempt to murder Anri, nearly killing Mikado Ryuugamine in the process.

* {{Woolseyism}}: The English dub of the anime changes most of Masaomi's GratuitousEnglish uses of the word "erotic" (in reference to Anri) to "boobylicious," particularly in Episode 13. It ends up working better, as "erotic" isn't often used in the same sense in English as he was using it in the original. That, and it's much more in keeping with Masaomi's personality to make up a word on the spot and then keep using it until Mikado tells him to stop. It also [[InherentlyFunnyWords just sounds funnier.]]

* FunnyAneurysmMoment: Remember that time Anri pretended to be stalking Mikado, and how he thought, "She might stab me!" Now realize that since Anri wields Saika, if she actually loved Mikado, [[{{Yandere}} she really would stab him, due to Saika's influence.]]

* HarsherInHindsight: Celty's comment to Shuuji about Shizuo's strength level in relation to others sounds a whole lot less innocent after episode 22.

* HilariousInHindsight: [[Manga/VentoAureo This won't be the last time]] Creator/KyleMcCarley voices an ill-tempered gang member who is OlderThanHeLooks, and at one point, gets stabbed in the hand with a pen.

* DarknessInducedAudienceApathy: As the series progresses, the number of absolutely batshit crazy characters seems to increase with every arc, and many sane characters [[JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope lose their sympathetic status]] [[MoralEventHorizon as well]].

** [[SexySecretary Kasane Kujiragi]] is a {{Dhampyr}} who uses the name "Jinnai Yodogiri" to [[BigBad orchestrate]] the events of ''2x''. After Izaya Orihara ignores her warning to not interfere with her plans she has him stabbed and later interrogated for information, before allowing him to continue manipulating people to keep them distracted from her own scheming. Also a wielder of Saika, Kasane would hand over Saika to Shingen Kishitani having him spread Saika throughout Ikebukuro creating more Saika wielders and expand Saika influence to almost everyone in Ikebukuro giving Kasane complete control over masses minds and the city. She would also posses Shingen’s son Shinra to make Shinra’s LoveInterest Celty Sturluson more vulnerable allowing Kasane to defeat her and give Celty her head to put her under Kasane’s control. Kasane would later save her half-niece, Ruri Hijiribe, from her stalker while taking full blame for the crimes Ruri committed as the Hollywood SerialKiller, so that Ruri can continue living a normal life.

** Shinra for being a nerdy scientist, turning into a gushing mess when around or talk ing about Celty, and spending his elementary and high school days fanboying over Shizou's strength.

** ** When Vorona goes undercover as Shizuo's kohai to discover his weaknesses and eventually kill him, she discovers to her surprise that the [[TheRedBaron God of Destruction in a Bartender Suit]] is actually a rather dorky NiceGuy when he's not under the influence of his violent HairTriggerTemper. Cue the [[DefrostingIceQueen defrosting]].
** Celty whenever she tries to do regular human activities like cooling or when she gets scared of aliens and cops.
