* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: Related to his status as a Base Breaking Character, this is one of the reasons why Kyoma Mabuchi isn't considered a likeable person. He is meant to be portrayed as a JerkWithAHeartOfGold with a soft spot for kids and a DarkAndTroubledPast involving [[spoiler:the deaths of his girlfriend and his fellow soldiers]]. But while his past is genuinely tragic, in the eyes of fans, it does little to garner any sympathy for him, especially with his ''horrendous'' treatment of Mira due to her being a robot [[spoiler:(and resembling his deceased girlfriend)]]. He spends most of the series bossing her around and [[JustAMachine treating her like a robot and not a person]], never calling her by name and referring to her as a [[ItIsDehumanizing piece of junk]]. One particularly egregious example is in episode 5 where after Mira manages to escape the other world, instead of being concerned, Kyoma ''[[WouldHitAGirl punches]] her'' for [[UngratefulBastard not being there when he needed her]] (hurting his hand in the process). The fact that he warms up to Mira in the end does very little to make up for him treating her like shit for '''11 episodes''' straight.

* BrokenBase: The show airing on Creator/{{Toonami}} has been met with split reactions. Some were thrilled about it airing on Toonami since like ''Anime/SpaceDandy'', its airing on Toonami as it aired in Japan meant that many people would be able to see it for the first time. It's also considered to be a good show for the block since Toonami hadn't aired a science fiction show in a while and it's the closest they'll ever get to airing ''Anime/PsychoPass''.[[note]]Toonami couldn't air ''Psycho-Pass'' due it being on Creator/{{Netflix}}. Netflix stopped streaming the series on February 6, 2016.[[/note]] There's also the fact that it replaced the controversial ''Anime/AkameGaKill''; many were relieved that a potentially better show replaced it. Others, however, weren't too excited about it as they'd immediately written off the show as being uninteresting. There's also the fact that it only has 12 episodes, with virtually every other Toonami show has over 20 episodes with the only exceptions being ''Manga/DeadmanWonderland'' and a pair of OVA series. Finally, the series is a heavily CompressedAdaptation.

** Although Loser's story is important to the finale and the story's overarching history, his journeys and adventures are barely showcased.
** The Numbers. Instead of hunting the Numbers and seeing how they impact the world, they're mostly unimportant until the final episodes. Even then, the fact that there are hundreds of them is rendered moot, since Loser only needed five.

* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: In a surprisingly unique version of this, both Kyoma and Mira fall victim to this due to a lack of character development. In the opening episodes, Kyoma showed potential for a backstory about his hatred of coils to be explored and while he does get a backstory episode, he never grows as a character other than calling Mira by her real name in the end. Mira, on the other hand, had an entire episode dedicated to her struggles in regards to being a robot and living up to her creator's expectations but none of that is ever explored afterwards with Mira mostly being kidnapped or the victim of Kyoma's abuse. Similarly, Albert, despite being Kyoma's closest partner and having a significant role in all the arcs, never gets any development and we know as much about him in the end as we did in the beginning.
