* AcceptableTargets: Whatever nationality the Wikipedia article is most about is lambasted heavily. Most frequently happens to France.
** The France-insulting is [[LampshadeHanging lampshaded]] in 5x05 by Chris.
---> '''Gary''': And the wheel spins and lands on France!\\
'''Chris''': Again. The wheel is 50% France.
** And again in 7x01, also by Chris.
---> '''Gary''': And the wheel spins and lands on France\\
'''Chris''': (overlapping) [[CatchphraseInterruptus It's not a wheel!]] It's just a piece of cardboard with an arrow saying 'France!'
** Heck, it was predicted this would happen back in 4x01 ''when the "wheel" gag got started [[RuleOfThree by Chris]]''.
---> '''Gary''': We need a spinning wheel with an arrow that goes "ding ding ding!" [''cartoonish French accent''] LA FRANCE!\\
'''Chris''': [France is] just on every one except one that says "Germany."
** Outside of Nationalities, the group don't have a particularly high opinion on the backpacking subculture. The one episode that regularly mentions it, 5x03, ''Backpackers' Xpress'', starts off with the joke "is it named because you can avoid them?" and only gets more sarcastic from there.
** Peddlers of pseudoscience or outdated science are routinely mocked by the gang, as demonstrated in the Sydney Weltmer, Cello Scrotum, Thomas Midgley, Camille Flammarion, Benjamin Rush, and Hail Cannon episodes.
*** In the case of the Thomas Midgley episode, [[OnlySaneMan Tom]] does point out that every thing Thomas Midgley helped develop that would go on to have awful downsides for the environment or peoples health (Lead in petrol, CFC's in fridges) were at the time ''[[ScienceMarchesOn literally the only way]]'' to prevent problems in the way people were doing things before, as leaded petrol ''does'' indeed reduce knocking in cars and before CFC's people used ''propane'' to power/run their fridges. Matt even ends up feeling sympathy for him because he was very clearly ''trying'' to help, he was just working with the sciences of the time.

* CrossesTheLineTwice: The group is not above stepping over the line if the opportunity presents itself, but special mention has to go to the rabbit conspiracy RunningGag in 3x06, where Chris and Gary make references to the Kennedy assassination [[FluffyTheTerrible while acting like The Teletubbies did it.]]

* SpiritualAntithesis: The show's replacement, ''WebVideo/TwoOfThesePeopleAreLying'', is almost completely antithetical to ''Citation Needed'' in many ways:
** Instead of Tom simply playing host and watching the insanity, he's now a central participant in the mayhem.
** Where ''Citation Needed'' was built around Tom knowing the contents of the topic and the other three having to guess, ''Two of These'' is based around Tom picking a topic he knows nothing about and guessing which of the other three is giving truthful information about the topic.
** Coming off the heels of series 6-8, there's also a RevisitingTheRoots vibe to ''Two of These''; the show is once again filmed in the living room of a house rather than a studio, many of the long-lived running gags from this show are scrapped, the setup is now much more minimalist (2 cameras and 4 cheap microphones compared to a multitude of camera angles and professionally recorded audio), etc.

* CrazyAwesome: 3x03 (Sergeant Reckless), 6x01 (Lt-Col. Jack Churchill), 6x04 (UsefulNotes/JulieDAubigny), and 8x03 (Juan Pujol Garcia) feature the crew taking someone who is already a case of this (horse serving in Korean War, Bagpipes-playing claymore-and-longbow-wielding WWII soldier, Opera singing French swordfighter, and WWII double agent spy with hilariously brilliant tactics, respectively) and joking about them being even ''more'' over-the-top.

* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: When the series ended many fans were slightly annoyed that the group never got around to doing Emojli, a failed social media platform ''run by Matt and Tom'' where users could only talk in emoji's, or even Tom's own wikipedia page. While Tom has said that they wouldn't do it since it would just be a 15-minute roast of the two, it would be a fitting send-off for a show with this much friendly ribbing.

** 1x08, "The Flag of Mars and Rods from God" opens with over ''five minutes'' of the lads riffing on a fictional chocolate war, with descriptions of Freddos as casualties with missing limbs and "caramel guts spread across the battlefield" á la ''Film/SavingPrivateRyan''. It's in such poor taste that it's hilarious.

* EnsembleDarkhorse: Despite only appearing in two episodes, Will Seaward's stand-in appearance is very fondly remembered due to how well he gelled with the rest of the crew, and for being responsible for several of the show's funniest moments. The comment section is bound to have at least one mention of "PANTHERS?" in it somewhere.
