* DracoInLeatherPants: A lot of people like to portray Jackson Storm as more of a JerkWithAHeartOfGold rather than the JerkWithAHeartOfJerk he is in the film. Forgetting about his personality, Storm's design ''as a car'' is pretty cool - sort of a mix between a NASCAR Xfinity Series car and a Film/LeMans racer, the sort of design that pops up every so often as a NASCAR concept. The black paint job and electric blue trim and decals just add to it. That kind of a racer showed up in RealLife NASCAR it would pretty much turn ''everybody's'' head.

** Cal Weathers really has about three major scenes in which he appears in, but is a pretty popular character nonetheless thanks to his friendly rivalry with Lightning and being a pretty funny characters. Helps that he's also the nephew of Strip Weathers.

** Among the Next-Gen racers, Harvey Rodcap has a unique paint design with clashing colors that makes him stand out. He was also one of the Next-Gen racers (along with Tim Treadless) to show shock and concern for Lightning when he crashed.

** What happened in the four months that passed following Lightning's near-fatal accident.

** The surprisingly intense teaser trailer implies that the film will be [[DarkerAndEdgier the darkest in the trilogy]], and is obviously appealing to viewers who consider the ''Cars'' franchise Pixar's only franchise built entirely for [[CashCowFranchise kid's merchandise]].
** For that matter, the later trailers seem to have been created to assuage worries about the movie being too [[DarkerAndEdgier dark and gritty for its own good]], by showcasing some genuinely comedic moments (some of which have in fact been better received than the hit-and-miss humor of the last two movies).
** It's easy to read this movie as Pixar [[OldShame "apologizing"]] for ''WesternAnimation/Cars2'', a film that much of their staff has admitted they weren't proud of.
*** It completely ignores the events of the second one altogether, and seems to present itself as the "real" sequel to the first film, complete with multiple {{call back}}s and mirrored story beats.[[note]]''2'' in general more closely-follows the formula of ''Mater's Tall Tales'', a series of promotional shorts which played on Disney Channel, none of which are canonical with the film, so it'd made sense for all of it to have been quickly forgotten once the joke is over.[[/note]]
*** The focus is shifted back to [=McQueen=], racing and Radiator Springs, all of which are considered the more memorable aspects of the first film.
*** Casting Mater, a character generally agreed to be likable only in small doses, as the lead in ''Cars 2'' was cited as its biggest flaw. Here, his role is dialed back to only a couple brief scenes, staying out of [=McQueen=]'s way and generally only showing up when needed.

* Jossed: The film reveals Doc's crash of '54 happened because he lost control, rather than the result of another car making him crash, as some fans believed. A Cars comic published by Boom! Studios went with the old theory.

* ToughActToFollow: The ''Cars'' franchise wasn't very well received as it was, but the fact that this film came after ''WesternAnimation/FindingDory''---a very well-received sequel to one of Pixar's most beloved films---didn't help.

* {{HSQ}}: Let's just say the first teaser's footage of Lightning [=McQueen's=] fateful crash threw ''everybody'' in for a loop ([[BrokenBase for better or worse]]).

** The DarkerAndEdgier tone of the trailer is this to the other half of the BrokenBase who felt like the series was too kid-friendly for older audiences (which, again, [[Radar/{{Cars}} is saying something]]).

* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: Mia and Tia (the two [[{{Squee}} ecstatic groupies]] that [[Radar/{{Cars}} flashed]] [=McQueen=] in the first film) are not featured in this film. Seeing as over ten years have passed since the original film, [[note]]Presumably InUniverse as well since [=McQueen=] is treated as a "living legend" similar to the Hudson Hornet and The King[[/note]] this film could have further enforced the theme of [=McQueen=] being past his prime by showing that they have gotten older and matured out of their giddy fangirl personas, though they are never mentioned and are replaced by [[SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute Maddy [=McGear=]]].

** Whenever someone teases Lightning about his age. While funny to most people, it can get particularly grating after a while. Especially the annoyed reaction we get from Lightning in response...

* MostWonderfulSound: Pretty much EVERY time we hear Lightning's engine.

* VisualEffectsOfAwesome:

** Before it was released, there were quite a lot of debates over whether or not the sequel was going to be an [[SurprisinglyImprovedSequel improvement]] over ''WesternAnimation/Cars2'', or be just as bad, if not ''worse'', than the aforementioned film. After its release, however, people have begun to lean more towards the former.

** [[spoiler:Sterling going from a well-intentioned if somewhat greedy corporate executive to a full-on {{Jerkass}} at the climax is a bit hard to swallow. It's as though the writers were worried that the audience would sympathize with him too much and threw this in at the last moment just to make him less sympathetic when his company gets bought out by Dinoco.]]

** Lightning [=McQueen=] and Jackson Storm's contrasting color schemes [[note]]Lightning's being red with yellow flash bolts and Jackson being sleek blue and black[[/note]] are unintentionally similar to [[Series/TheFlash2014 The Flash and Zoom]].

** "Name's Danny, bro." [[labelnote:Explanation]]One of the next-gen racers, named Danny, introduces himself to Lightning with this very quote.[[/labelnote]]

* TakeThat: The next-gen racers appear to be one towards the current state of NASCAR, namely the loss of the "stock" aspect and an over-reliance on technology. Though the current Cup Series cars are ''nothing'' like the Le Mans-style cars seen in the movie.

* BaseBreakingCharacter: There were some who wished [[JerkWithAHeartOfJerk Jackson Storm]] wasn't as flat a character.
