I generally do not edit alternate character interpretation but this is simply not true. The Hawk knew who they were as he immediately asked the fateful question about them being indeed the most evil men in the land. He was simply surprised at having seen them at that time since he didn't expect Edmund to having escaped and sending a message prompting them to break in the castle. If there is indeed an earlier draft that states this then it should be taken to trivia

The real-world explanation for this is that it was left over from earlier drafts of the script in which the morris dancer and the Hawk were entirely separate characters, but it's resulted in some debates over whether the morris dancer was really the Hawk the whole time, or if the latter pulled a KillAndReplace at some point.
