* MoralEventHorizon: Marie may have meant to protect her daughter, but she ends up crossing this once she slips crushed EC pills into her daughter's smoothie in order to abort Sara's pregnancy without her knowledge or consent. Sara understandably feels betrayed once she learns this from her school's doctor, leading to the fight that results in Sara ultimately running away.

* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: Sara can come across as this for some. While it’s clear that she’s meant to be a victim of her mother’s lack of respect for her privacy and independence, the fact is the reason Marie even starts monitoring her again is because she found out the story that her daughter told her about seeing a movie with her friends was false, which would’ve put Marie’s trust in question regardless of how big of a helicopter mom she is. Furthermore, while Sara’s fury at her mom’s invasion of her privacy and for slipping her abortion pills is very understandable, her nearly beating her mother to a pulp seems a lot more extreme than say, simply smashing the tablet.

"Idiot Plot" is now Flame Bait. Renamed one trope.

* IdiotPlot:
** The chip is meant to monitor and control every aspect of a child's life, from their location to what they see and hear. It's impossible to remove it, even after the child has grown up. Even if the initial idea were a good one (it's not), there are a limitless myriad of ways for this to go wrong...[[LampshadedTrope Lampshaded]] when it's mentioned that they were being banned, presumably for that reason, and already had been banned elsewhere.
** Baby monitor products are ''already'' overwhelmingly used by abusers, and Arkangel takes that up to eleven. Sure, Marie's spying on her daughter is of the WellIntentionedExtremist variety, but [[FridgeHorror what if it wasn't?]] What if there was a parent who could use this to ensure that an abused child didn't seek help, or go to the police, or tell even a trusted friend? Not to mention that privacy violation on this level may actually be bordering on [[https://www.youthforhumanrights.org/what-are-human-rights/videos/right-to-privacy.html a human rights violation]], especially when the child gets older. Really, it's stunning that this was ever allowed in the United States at all. Of course, as of 2018, the US is the only major country not to have ratified the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convention_on_the_Rights_of_the_Child UN Convention on the Rights of the Child]].

Trope is not about the example being important or necessary. Trope is about how the story is improved because the message is unsubtle, where a more subtle message would not have improved it.

* SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped: As is par for the course with ''Black Mirror'', the [[AnAesop aesops]] as detailed on the main recap page are delivered with the subtlety of a slamming sledgehammer, but they are very important and necessary lessons nonetheless.
