That doesn\'t make this a Family Unfriendly Aesop, especially as written (the latter part is largely natter). The fact that he lost his children in no way absolves him from the fact that he is still killing for hire as part of a gang that is actively supporting the Borgia. It is quite clear during the intro cutscene to that mission that Ezio considers Lanz a murderer and will make him pay for his crimes.

You can now poison enemies from afar, with almost no chance of a hostile spotting Ezio, unlike the poison blade where you had to get into melee range. Furthermore, any hostiles around will be distracted as they watch the victim's throes, allowing you to slip by. Contrast with the Hidden Gun, which almost certainly will give Ezio away, and the crossbow which is also likely to be detected. There\'s nowhere saying Lanz is psychotic, only that he became a gang leader because of his family\'s death. He\'s serving the Borgia because they would otherwise kill them for stealing from them. Killing herself wouldn\'t solve anything, and Ezio\'s solution is based on \"Solve everything with Hidden Blade\" mentality that Altair had in the first game. The other Templar Agents were true Jerks and Complete Monsters, but Lanz was given a sympathetic background that isn\'t that different from Ezio, who also lost his family.
