* ItWasHisSled: The story is arguably most famous for its {{Tearjerker}} ending, where [[spoiler:the children lock Margot in the closet, leading her to miss out on seeing the sun for the first time in seven years]].

* BittersweetEnding: In the live action adaptation, but it leans more towards bitter. William attempts to give Margot the flowers he picked during their hour outside but he are rebuffed by Margot, showing that she does not forgive her classmate. She then walks outside and stands in the rain, crying as she looks up at the sky and over how she missed the sun. Her classmates then surround her with their flowers, which she relents and then accepts from them. In the end, Margot accepts William's flowers as well, but from her cold stare it is obvious that she does not forgive him.
* HopeSpot: A minor one, but it is implied that Margot's parents were thinking about moving back to Earth. Given what happens to their daughter, Margot might be able to go back to Earth and see the sun everyday.

* TheWoobie: Margot, who moved from Earth when she was four and has never fit in on Venus because of her memories of the sun. When the sun does come out for the first time in 7 years, she never gets to experience it and it's only after the other kids get to experience it do they remember that they locked her in the closet when the rain comes back. From what we know about Margot, she really needed the sunshine and that day probably would've been the happiest she's been in the last five years.

** William plays this straight in the live-action adaptation. He's the de-facto leader of the classroom or something akin to the class president and uses this position to bully Margot and tattle on her every chance he gets. Since the sun comes out every 9 years in that adaptation, making it so the children other than Margot have never seen the sun. He steadily grows more and more jealous of Margot as the hour of sunshine draws near and Margot becomes the center of attention in class due to all the activities being focused on the sun and the other students, especially William, are casually brushed off by their teacher in favor of Margot and her knowledge of the sun, which causes William to lash out at his teacher and call Margot a liar about having ever seen the sun and smuly rubbing in her face that there is a chance the sun will never come out as more false positives about the hour's arrival happen. His classmates even put all the blame of locking Margot in the closet on him even though they were involved as well, outright ignoring William when he tries to justify himself.

* AAdaptationPersonalityChange: Margot in the live action version. She is a little more outgoing and more open about using the sun lamps after talking with her teacher, unlike her short story self that was reserved and would have a FreakOut over having to use a sunlamp and would scream about not letting the light touch her. She even talks about the sun to her classmates and shows them somethings like a flower or butterfly she has to remind her of her life on Earth.

** JerkassWoobie: William and the other kids are jealous of Margot and are mean to her but it's not hard to feel for them when they get to experience the sunshine and realize that they're not going to get it again for seven years.
