Melinda's descent probably could've been mitigated if her family had gotten her the mental health counseling she needed earlier. Especially in light of the ending where [[spoiler: it's implied she had undiagnosed Borderline Personality Disorder.]]
** Never forget that love matters the most. Robert was so focused on getting his battery sold to Prescott that he neglected his relationship with his wife which left her vulnerable enough to believe that he was just using her for her money and cheated on her again. This is pointed out in one poignant scene where Robert lists all of the things he wants to give Melinda and she tiredly replies that he "never asked her what she wanted".
