** The three hunters [[spoiler:being dispatched in just one scene]] is fairly disappointing, as many fans would have liked them to have a whole subplot and maybe even reach the cabins and join in the action there.

* WinBackTheCrowd: A minor case, but many consider this movie to be the first step for Creator/DreamWorksAnimation to return to their old style of snarky, yet beautiful movies after most of their original movies have been regarded as somewhat [[WesternAnimation/Home2015 uninspired]], [[WesternAnimation/{{Trolls}} obnoxious]] or [[WesternAnimation/TheBossBaby plain stupid]].

** CJ is suddenly on the same floor as Amanda and the creature after hiding in the closet above them earlier and blocking the door in a deleted scene (possibly subverted if you guess that she came to try and help Amanda or Michelle).
* CultClassic: Possibly given how it has a somewhat good reputation on message websites, has been posted on Website/YouTube multiple times with plenty of views, got onto amazon prime and the DVD is pretty expensive.

** The three hunters (Ziegler, Farmer Hoss and Buddy) are seen as entertaining and under-utilized for some decent moments of humor and trying to go after the monster. Ziegler and Buddy being played by Creator/LanceHenriksen and Creator/JeffreyCombs helps immensely.

* OneSceneWonder: Ziegler, played by the legendary Creator/LanceHenriksen, and Farmer Hoss's wife each have just one scene.

* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: Recently widowed Preston could have connected some with the engaged Michelle while observing the friends, especially if she’d survived with Amanda. Her engagement remind him of his wife could have motivated him trying to help the group more in the first place.

** All five girls, given how a happy occasion turns into one of absolute terror and for some of them death.

** And of course Preston, who lost his wife in a traumatic incident, is forced to return to the area and re-live it and then is unable to stop people from getting killed next door, while being aware he might be next.

* SpiritualSuccessor: Some decided to call the movie "''WesternAnimation/{{Home}}'' done correctly", since both feature a non-white female protagonist escorting a non-human character through the continent.

* SugarWiki/AwesomeAnimation: The animation is ''unbelievable.''

** Among the girls at the cabin, Tracy (a decently spunky character who tries to do the smart thing and just call the police to report their friend missing) and AsianAirhead and ActionSurvivor CJ are fairly well-liked.

* NightmareFuel: [[spoiler:Dr. Zara herself. A poacher acting as a caring zoologist to gain the trust of others. But it's at the film's climax where she can be considered one of the vilest [[Creator/DreamWorksAnimation DreamWorks]] villains. Just the simple fact of her throwing a child off a bridge showcases her disregard for human life. And how far she'll go to put Everest in an auction, alive, or dead.]]

** Among the girls at the cabin, Tracy (a decently spunky character who tires to do the smart thing and just call the police to report their friend missing) and AsianAirhead and ActionSurvivor CJ are fairly well-liked.

* MoralEventHorizon: The Monster loses any sympathy it might have had as a simple predator defending its territory when it attacks Tracy while she's inside the house and drags her out the window.
* NightmareFuel: The monster is hideous and terrifying. Special mention goes to the JumpScare where it kills Tracy.

* OneSceneWonder: Ziegler, played by the legendary Creator/LanceHenriksen, and Farmer Hoss’s wife.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: recently widowed Preston could have connected some with the engaged Michelle while observing the friends, especially if she’d survived with Amanda. Her engagement remind him of his wife could have motivated him trying to help the group more in the first place.
