** In "Read-a-Thon," Melissa realizes one of her students struggles with reading, to the point where she's barely literate, and suspects she might have a learning disability--which is rough, but can be navigated with the proper tools and learning. However, when she tries to broach the topic with the girl's parents, the parents get ''very'' defensive and adamantly deny there's anything "wrong" with their daughter, and refuse to have her tested. Melissa tries to get them to see reason and understand that she's not saying their daughter isn't smart (she clearly is very bright), she just needs a little extra help, but they won't hear it. Melissa's obviously downcast as she knows this will only hurt the girl in the long run, and later takes her aside privately to teach her some reading techniques that can help her. In doing so, Melissa reveals she herself has a learning disability, and struggled with reading as a kid, meaning this whole thing is ''very'' close to home for her.
** In "Teacher of the Year," Janine has a student with behavioral problems that she's tried repeatedly to address, but he's just been acting out more and more in response. She finally has a meeting with his mother to try and discuss what may be causing this and how they can fix it, and she approaches the situation with empathy and kindness... only for the mother to lash out at her for not being able to manage her son on her own, and calling her, "The worst teacher I've ever seen." Janine, who's made teaching her life's work and wants nothing more than to take good care of her students, breaks down crying after the mother leaves. Gregory tries to comfort her, but has no clue what to say, so he brings her to Barbara, who has to help calm Janine down and help her pick herself back up and keep going.
--->'''Barbara:''' People have thrown dirt on my name and others have given flowers. But it's all a garden to me.
** In "Mom", we meet Vanetta, Janine's mother and despite the love Vanetta shows Janine, we can see their messed-up relationship dynamic. In the scene where Vanetta is introduced, Janine completely freezes hearing her footsteps down the hall before even ''seeing'' her, highlighting the tramua that Janine grew up with.

* DiagnosedByTheAudience: Gregory's social awkwardness, extremely particular taste in food (specifically his opinion that mixing several different flavors is gross), and trouble with the education system when he was a kid has led to some fans speculating that he might be autistic. In the season 2 premiere, he also shows that he is incredibly anal about tight scheduling, which might also be a sign of autism. He also sometimes misunderstands figurative language and can be a bit LiteralMinded.

* EnsembleDarkhorse:
** In the case of the literal ensemble, the child actors portraying the students are often highly praised for having sharp comedic timing and, when necessary, being able to carry a genuinely serious moment, too. In particular, Andrew, the kid in Janine's class who refuses to say the pledge of allegiance because he's "taking a principled stand against nationalism," due to his few prominent scenes all being hilarious.
** Tariq is a recurring character, popping in a couple times per season, and starts off as Janine's lazy, unlikable boyfriend. However, his earnestness and self-confidence, glimmers of HiddenDepths, and GiftedlyBad rapping won viewers over, and he's now very well-liked. He got especially popular after he and Janine broke up, meaning he's no longer dragging her down and viewers can just enjoy him being funny and ridiculous. Fans are generally very happy when he shows up, and many have expressed a desire to see him grow up a little and find someone else, and/or actually make his rap career work.

** In the second season finale, Ava says she doesn't mind being called selfish, since people call her selfish all the time, including her grandma, that morning. While it's unclear ''which'' grandma called her selfish, it's possible it's the same one the first season established Ava [[MoralityPet cares very deeply for]] and is looking after due to her Alzheimer's--i.e., the one person we know Ava is ''not'' selfish towards. If it is indeed the same woman, does Ava not mind her grandma saying that because of her unapologetic nature in general? Or does she attribute her grandma lashing out at her to her disease, and thus know not to take it personally?

* AccidentalAesop: In "Teacher's Conference", Ava uses Janine's mommy issues in a presentation on how to handle "problem teachers". As crude as it was to use that information, Janine did have an issue of casually sharing her personal problems with her coworkers even when the situation didn't call for it. In other words, be careful with what you share since not everyone will be as sympathetic to your personal problems.

** Is Ava a genuine LazyBum or does she care about her work and tries to hide it? While she’s not a great principal, she does help Janine and Barbara get supplies with her videos and she bonds with the step class really easily.

* SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoments:
** The pure concept of the show. Most of the primary cast are deeply invested in giving their students the best possible start in life, despite struggling with funding. It's clear that these people love their work, even if the older teachers have learned to accept that the best they can do is work with what they're given, and all of them have their moments where their care for their students is evident. Even Ava grows to care about her job and will go out of her way to help the students who need it, whether that's by going out of her way to help them relax if they're sent to her office or buying them uniforms that fit if they're going through growth spurts. It's wholesome to see a show about nice people trying to make a positive difference in the world.
** In "Teacher of the Year," Barbara immediately goes to comfort Janine when she's upset after being berated by a student's mother. Despite her frequent annoyance with Janine, it's clear that Barbara does care about her deeply.
** Despite Janine's strained relationship with her mother, Vanetta, while she's around Ava quickly reconsiders finishing an insult directed towards Janine when she sees that Vanetta would [[MamaBear beat her ass for it]].
** Any episode where Barbara is a "work mom" to Janine from inviting her out to eat in "Open House" to giving her advice and encouragement as a teacher. When Barbara realizes that Vanetta only came to visit Janine to get her to pay her phone bills, and Janine planned to use her vacation money to do this, Barbara privately implores for Vanetta to turn down Janine's offer. She even offers to pay the bill herself to allow Janine her vacation.
** In "Franklin Institute," Ava gets it in her head that [[ItMakesSenseInContext an alien is attacking the students]]. She and the others, including Melissa armed with her [[BatterUp trusty baseball bat]], go to investigate, and find that the "alien" is Barbara. Ava, true to form, actually thinks Barbara is an alien, but she does get a PetTheDog moment where she tells Melissa that she would never ask her to "take Barbara out," since the two are best friends... [[SugarWiki/FunnyMoments so she'll make Jacob do it instead]].

Barbara and Melissa are best friends and the FanPreferredCouple, while Barbara and Gerald are HappilyMarried. It helps that Melissa and Gerald seem like close friends and get along well.

* PlatonicWritingRomanticReading: Barbara and Melissa are supposed to be simply friends (especially since Barbara is married), but a lot of fans see their dynamic as romantic. They are the closest of any of the teachers due to knowing each other for years, with Melissa saying that she would kill for Barbara, and their friendship leads to a lot of LesYay. One episode has Barbara feeling self-conscious about growing older, with Melissa comforting Barbara by telling her that she's only "gotten better with age". Another episode has Barbara accidentally insult Melissa due to her criminal connections before making it up to her by "shaking down someone" for her. This is not helped by the fact that their canon love interests aren't featured much in the show.
