* LittleMissBadass: When she was sixteen years old, she approached Grizzly Smith and asked him to teach her how to wrestle; he told her to come back when she was 21. Five years later, Sherri came back and declared that she had almost year of training under her belt, so Smith went upstairs and then came down and told Sherri to report to the Fabulous Moolah’s training camp.

In '87, Wrestling/JesseVentura referred her to WWF boss Wrestling/VinceMcMahon, and Martel wound up winning the WWF women's title from her old teacher The Fabulous Moolah. Outside of the women's division, she played a dual role as the Wrestling/HonkyTonkMan's girlfriend Peggy Sue, which ignited her blood feud with Wrestling/MissElizabeth. This angle uncorked a hidden talent, one that would allow her to stay in the wrestling business long past her time: When the WWF phased out women's wrestling in '89, Sherri got promoted to Macho Man's manager during his heel run. Their promos together were so popular (and deranged) that it led to other partnerships with Ted Dibiase, Shawn Michaels/Marty Jannetty, and further down the line.

It ended with the Colonel planting a big kiss on Sherri, which she reacted to with a punch in the face. However, when the tag teams faced each other again at Fall Brawl, Fall Brawl, both Managers ended up in the ring and shared a mutual kiss that baffled the arena.

Parker to Las Vegas (with Mean Gene Okerland giving her away!) only to be sneak-attacked by the returning (Sherri's old nemesis from her AWA days), which caused havoc and destroyed the wedding placements. The following night on Nitro, Mean Gene interviewed Sherri about the aftermath, only to flee in for his life when Madusa pounced once again, turning this into the first women's fight segment on Nitro. Sherri won this round, but after the Match, Madusa came back for more and beat Sherri so bad that she was missing in action for months. In reality, Wrestling/EricBischoff suspended Sherri for a year under the condition that she enter rehab.

By this point Sherri had developed a dependence on painkillers which got her booted from the company. She spent the rest of the nineties kicking around , , and (rebranded "Sensuous" Sherri and Sister Sherri) as both a wrestler and manager. By 2000 she had relapsed and she was reluctantly let go from WCW.

In '87, Wrestling/JesseVentura referred her to WWF boss Wrestling/VinceMcMahon, and Martel wound up winning the WWF women's title from her old teacher Moolah. Outside the women's division, she played a dual role as the Wrestling/HonkyTonkMan's girlfriend Peggy Sue, which kicked off her blood feud with Wrestling/MissElizabeth.

By this point Sherri had developed a dependence on painkillers which got her booted from the company. She spent the rest of the nineties kicking around and (rebranded "Sensuous" Sherri and Sister Sherri) as both a wrestler and manager. By 2000 she had relapsed and she was reluctantly let go from WCW.

Sherri Schrull née Russell (1958-2009), known to us as the "Sensational" Sherri Martel, was an American professional wrestler, valet, and manager best known for her work in during the late-80's and early 90's. The list of Sherri Martel's clients is a veritable Who's Who of wrestling royalty, including "Macho Man" Randy Savage, "Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase, "Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels, "Nature Boy" Ric Flair, and Harlem Heat.

Beginning her career in Japan, Sherri returned to the United States and joined the AWA, where she gained notoriety as a conceited rule-breaker who would do anything to win a match -- the shape of things to come. As a manager, Sherri also established herself as someone was not afraid to beat seven shades of crap out of male opponents in the ring. She won the AWA World Women's Championship 3 times while with the company.

!!!A REAL woman's Tropes:
* EightiesHair: A true daughter of the eighties: Divine crossed with Pat Benatar.
* ActionDressRip: A few of them, like "Queen" Sherri's diamond-encrusted showgirl skirt, could tear off as needed.
* Archenemy: Madusa, Luna Vachon, Sapphire ("You COMMON woman!!") and especially Miss Elizabeth.
* AwesomeMomentOfCrowning: A lengthy coronation of Macho King, along with his squeeze. Also, she wore a tiara when she was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2006.
* TheBaroness: To Jake “The Snake” Roberts, “Macho Man” Randy Savage, Ric Flair, Shane Douglas, Shawn Michaels, Ted Dibiase, Terry Funk....hang on, who didn't she manage? When not busy with her marathon posing sessions or vamping all over the place (type 1), she fit this to a tee. Michaels even said that if his opponents wouldn't sell for him, she'd make them sell. (type 2)
** DarkChick: Served as one to Harlem Heat.
* BondageIsBad & ReadyForLovemaking: Shawn's win pose of beckoning Sherri over, grabbing the back of her head, and shoving her to the mat...to which she responds with a kittenish smile. Not even the Attitude Era could get away with that.
* CatsAreMean: The cat motif she displayed often.
-->Wrestling/DeanAmbrose: You don't want women screaming at you and trying to scratch your eyes out, like some kinda Evil Witch...Cat...Lady.
* CombatStilettos: Sherri's stiletto boots, which she used to kick the shit out of her opponents.
** Shawn claims that a few times, when one of the boys went too rough on him in the ring, she told him to throw them out there, and they got certain areas kicked by her boots.
* CostumePorn:invoked She went through a blizzard of outfits (some designed by Sherri herself), usually themed around whomever she was managing. The commentators learned to dread the next fashion monstrosity she was going to parade in with.
** TheFlapper: Worn while she was in Ted [=DiBiase's=] employ. Looked like an Oscar statuette.
** FrenchMaidOutfit: A gold foil tutu (natch) while partnered with the Million Dollar Man. To compliment his schtick of throwing dollar bills at his opponents, Sherri helpfully lifted her skirt so Ted could pluck them from her g-string.
** JunglePrincess: While managing Titanka--er, Tatanka.
** OminousOperaCape: Queen Sherri's cloaks. Sister Sherri wore one to her Vegas wedding, no less.
** PrettyFlyForAWhiteGuy: Sister Sherri dropped the Andrew Lloyd Webber look for a different kind of feline: Black Panther.
* DoItYourselfThemeTune: Helped Shawn compose his own theme, "Sexy Boy", and also sang a solo version which can peel the paint off walls.
** DreadfulMusician: Both are spectacularly-bad, but became fan favorites nonetheless. Later, Kurt Angle made a boob of himself by coming out to "Sexy Kurt" at [=WrestleMania 21=]. He's just Sexy Kurt. He'll make your ankle hurt.
* EvilCounterpart: To Elizabeth, who deposed her as Macho's valet and eventually married him. Just as Elizabeth fit a 10-year-old boy's image of their dream girlfriend, Sherri got away with fanservice while terrifying the kiddies with her weird makeup.
* ExcessiveEvilEyeShadow: Good grief. Purple or black line extending further than they needed to, which Alissa Flash used to imitate. Even in the reality era (TNA), when she ditched the black latex for a pleated suit, the makeup remained.
-->Gorilla Monsoon: Who does her makeup, Helen Keller?
* FacialMarkings: Sported some distinctive facial markings in her career, including her initials (SS), full cat makeup, a dollar sign (for Ted), and a heart (for AAAH OOOH SHAAAAAAAAWN).
* Fangirl: She's just an overgrown ring rat at heart. What other manager would insist on a below-the-belt stipulation to preserve Shawn and Rick Martel's beautiful faces? When it looked like they might break the stipulation, she Fainting fainted dead away.
-->V1: That's not very clever. Um... his name is the eart reak id. It's not gonna end well for ya, Sherri! At all!\\
Jay Hunter: Maybe she believes she can change him.
* FinishingMove: Removing her boots and performing a Big Splash while still clutching both heels. Ouch.
** FriendlyFire: ...But since the opponent needs to be restrained for the shoe attack to work, she usually clobbered her own men.
* GodSaveUsFromTheQueen: When Savage was still doing his "Macho King" schtick (beating Duggan at King of the Ring went straight to his head), Sherri began sporting a grandiose crown, cape, and scepter. The pair were carried into the ring on a sedan chair by beefy manservants. When Vince [=McMahon=] grumbled that Miss Elizabeth would never stoop to such vulgar displays, Sherri barked angrily that she was "The Queen" of the WWF and Liz was merely the First Lady.
* HandbagOfHurt: Her idea of "interference" was to scurry into the ring and club people with a purse from behind -- which they sold as if it were an anvil. (It was loaded.)
* HamToHamCombat: Her promos with Randy sounded like your next-door neighbors after a case of beer.
* HeyYouHaymaker: Less a manager than a piranha plant, anyone who got rolled onto the mat was immediately met with a handful of knuckles (or claws).
* HoistByTheirOwnPetard: Accidentally KO'ing her Boy Toy by aiming too high with the shoe.
** Accidentally KO'ing herself by swinging a steel briefcase at [=Debra McMichael=], bouncing it off a turnbuckle and whacking herself in the head with it.
** At [=SummerSlam=] '89, Sherri was atomic dropped by the Hulkster and then knocked out by her own purse by Miss Elizabeth!
** During his entrances, Sherri would follow after Shawn while carrying a heart-shaped dress mirror. HBK had just split from Marty Jannetty and was getting a push as a top heel. Prior to a match with Michaels, Jannetty grabbed the mirror and tried to bash Shawn with it. Michaels saw the attack coming and hid behind Sherri. Guess who took a 20 inch mirror to the face?
* IronButtMonkey: Getting piledrived by Shane Douglas, for a start.
** At [=SummerSlam=] '92, the Michaels-Martel card turned farcial when Sherri pretended to faint to stop the match. This had the opposite effect, as both wrestlers wanted to carry her backstage and started to bicker again. Shawn and Rick kept slugging and bowling each other over, with no regard for Sherri's safety as her limp form hit the ground multiple times.
* KickingAssInAllHerFinery: Sherri Martel hitting a splash from the turnbuckle on Hulk Hogan while wearing a freakin’ white evening gown, aw yeah.
* MeanCharacterNiceActor: In a business filled with backstabbing, feuds, and innuendos, nobody has a cross word to say about the woman. As mentioned in a shoot interview, she made it a policy to phone the wives/girlfriends of men she worked with and clear her risque in-ring behavior with them.
* MetalScream: OHHHH! OHHHH! SHAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWN!!
* MilkingTheGiantCow: Probably intended as a "Bring it" gesture, but with her constipated faces and clenched fingers, it looked more like she was preparing a kamehameha.
* MrsRobinson: By 1993, her persona was fixed: a sugar momma who scours the "world" looking for boys to groom for the title. The age gap was most apparent with Shawn Michaels and, briefly, Bobby Roode (who wasted no time asking her to dinner). She was a decade older than both.
* OffTheWagon: Those bumps came at a cost. She developed an addiction to painkillers which ultimately cut her life short in 2007 (less than two weeks before Benoit).
* OneSteveLimit: No relation to Rick Martel. Anyway, neither one's real name is Martel; they're both stage names.
* PunishedForSympathy: In 2005, she appeared in Kurt Angle's corner during the feud with her old beau, Shawn Michaels. HBK interrupted on the Trinitron with his own vignette, then called out Sherri for allying with his enemy after all they'd been through. Sherri kept her game face on, but did wipe away a tear. Wrong place, wrong time: An incensed Kurt finally lost it and put her in an ankle lock.
* PutTheirHeadsTogether: The favorite mode of dispatch whenever Sherri face faulted into the ring. Warrior won [=WrestleMania VII=] by grabbing Macho and Sherri by the hair and clonking them together; Macho himself would use this finish during a match with [=DiBiase=].
* ReallyGetsAround: Extremely flirtatious; for her debut at WCW, she walked right up to Mean Gene Okerlund[!] and snogged him before the mic was warm.
* Red Baroness: "Sensational", "Scary", "Queen", "Sensuous" (when she was at WCW), and "Sister" (when she managed the Harlem Heat, also in WCW).
* RichBitch: Why her partnership with [=DiBiase=] was a natural fit.
* SlutShaming: In an era where Divas didn't show any skin, Sherri was a mom-approved heel. She was always treated as a harlot, while Vince and company acted disgusted with everything she did -- though some innuendo did squeeze through the filter. Gorilla Monsoon inferred that Sherri had a filthy mouth in more ways than one (she passed around a lot of spit in the early nineties). By 1991, the pretense was beginning to break down somewhat: The costumes got skimpier (culminating in white, assless chaps at a London event), and the cameraman's ogling was a lot more obvious.
* SoreLoser & WildTake: Post-match interviews with Sherri are like a cokehead screaming at nothing in a locker room.
* TheUsualAdversaries: Due to circumstances outside of her control, including politics (a partnership with Ron Simmons fell through because of the O.J. Simpson trial), "retirements" (Ric Flair), injury (Steve Austin), or clients jumping ship to a rival company (Triple H), Sherri found herself a manager with nobody to manage. Consequently, she made some odd alliances over the years. , anyone? (Makes as much sense as the Shawn Michaels/Luna Vachon pairing, anyway.)
* UnholyMatrimony: Had this effect on heels, even the moribund Paul Bearer ("That's more animated than I've ever seen him; he's almost alive"). One man who wasn't buying was Andre: Sherri was among the top managers who competed for his attention in a hotel bar, only to be shoved out of the way. She received a spanking from the giant, because Sherri hadn't met her upskirt quota for the week.
* TheVamp: Her schtick was to wine and dine prospective "boy toys", offering her services in exchange for netting them the belt. The Ultimate Warrior proved immune to her charms.
-->WrestleCrap: I wish he’d actually reacted positively to her advances. Then we could’ve had a series of Sherri/Warrior date vignettes.
* WeddingSmashers: In a promo, she threatened to do this at Macho and Elizabeth's wedding. Beefcake helpfully handed her some transportation -- a broom.
** Her elopement with Colonel Parker was cut short when Madusa emerged and put Sherri through a table -- which was also the one holding the hors-d'oeuvres.
* WickedWitch: The segment before Summerslam '89 with the "cauldron of the madness", in which she claimed to foresee Macho's victory over Hogan.
* WigDressAccent: In 1988, Martel wrestled not only as herself, but her manager alter-ego "Peggy Sue", working for the Honky Tonk Man. Disguised with a blonde wig and sunglasses, Sue was supposedly jealous of fellow manager Miss Elizabeth and would even attack her. This opened the door to managerial duties once the women's division went bust.
* WomanScorned: The incident with the mirror took her off TV for several months. When she returned at the 1993 Royal Rumble, she sided with Jannetty in a match, ending her run with Michaels. Shawn would later have Luna in his corner for matches.
* WouldHitAGirl: One skill that kept Sherri around in the WWE was that she could take a bump, most frequently from the Wrestling/UltimateWarrior. She was a good looking lady that was as over as any heel on the roster (the temperature went up 50 degrees before she even spoke a word), and because of her background as a wrestler herself, she could be a legitimate threat on the outside; a rare set of attributes.
* YouHaveFailedMe: Something of a fair-weather manager, she was unforgiving toward Macho after his loss to Warrior. Rather than come to his aid, she kicked him repeatedly (he'd cost Sherri her "crown", you see.) until Elizabeth dove in and walloped her out of the ring. Later in the show, [=DiBase=]'s butler Virgil finally had enough of his boss' ill-treatment. Their fight spilled out into the apron and knocked over a one-legged Piper, still recovering from a knee injury. Incensed, Piper jumped in to assist[!], but double swerve: Sherri rematerialized and grabbed Piper's crutch in mid-swing, sealing his fate. In effect, [=DiBiase=] lost a heel bodyguard and gained a new one.
