Once upon a time, or maybe twice, there was an unearthly paradise called Pepperland, a magical under-sea utopia of peace, love and music. When the land is ravaged by the evil Blue Meanies, a race [[GoodHurtsEvil physically harmed by music and all things positive]], the Lord Mayor sends a man named Fred off in the titular submarine to find help. He ends up in Liverpool, where he convinces Music/RingoStarr and [[Music/JohnLennon his]] [[Music/GeorgeHarrison three]] [[Music/PaulMcCartney "mates"]] to return with him and save the day with [[ThePowerOfLove love, friendship]], and ThePowerOfRock. Along the way, [[RandomEventsPlot stuff happens]]. [[DisneyAcidSequence Very weird stuff.]]

Best remembered for it's one-of-a-kind psychedelic animation (designed by Heinz Edelmann), it's now considered the UrExample of the AnimatedMusicVideo, with most of the film consists of short, usually abstract vignettes set to Beatles recordings. What it lacks in coherent narrative, it more than makes up for in colorful and imaginative imagery, showing just was animation outside of Disney was capable of. All in all, it's quite a [[{{Pun}} trip]].

''Yellow Submarine'' is a psychedelic 1968 animated movie, that [[NotQuiteStarring doesn't quite star]] Music/TheBeatles (though their ''songs'' feature prominently, and they have a cameo appearance at the end). It was directed by George Dunning with art designs by Heinz Edelmann.

When [[SugarApocalypse Blue Meanies attack]] the strange and magical undersea utopia of "Pepperland", Young Fred (who is actually pretty old) is sent off in a near-omnipotent submarine to find help. He ends up in Liverpool, where he convinces Music/RingoStarr and his three "mates" to return with him. Along the way, stuff happens. [[DisneyAcidSequence Very weird stuff.]] With Beatles music all throughout and art in the style of Heinz Edelmann, their quest to rescue Pepperland is... quite a '[[{{Pun}} trip]]'. Can the Beatles save the day with love, friendship, and ThePowerOfRock? ''Yellow Submarine'' was a groundbreaking animation film for its time, featuring a lot of psychedelic, colourful and imaginative imagery. The artwork wasn't always technically perfect, and the story was more a surreal parade of scenes than a coherent plot, but this film certainly showed new visions of what animation could do. Thus it has become a CultClassic.

The Music/YellowSubmarine CultSoundtrack to the film is generally received in a less favourable light. Only four songs ("All Together Now", "Hey Bulldog", "It's All Too Much", "Only A Northern Song") are new original material; the rest had appeared on previous Beatles albums before, which are ''Music/{{Revolver}}'' ("Yellow Submarine") and ''Music/MagicalMysteryTour'' ("All You Need Is Love"). All other tracks on the album are orchestral music by George Martin, explaining why this album is often considered the one that hardcore Beatles fans can live without.

A [[SerkisFolk motion-capture]] remake of the cartoon was to be directed by Creator/RobertZemeckis and in pre-production, but is currently {{de|velopmentHell}}ad thanks to his [[WesternAnimation/MarsNeedsMoms previous movie]] flopping.
