* CentralTheme: Living with and controlling your fear versus ignoring and trying to avoid it. Arlo learns to control his fear and understand it by the interactions he has. His family comes across as fearless, whereas Arlo seemed anxious about everything and causes numerous problems. Over time, he learns fear isn't something to avoid, but rather it can be controlled and makes a potent catalyst for [[CowardlyLion bravery]]. The T-Rex family explains their fears and how they overcame different terrifying scenarios. The main villain, Thunderclap, claims to be absolutely fearless, [[spoiler:but he isn't so above it all]].

* TerrifyingTyrannosaur: [[InvertedTrope Inverted]]. When Arlo sees the two massive T-Rexes approach, he immediately falls to his back and holds his feet out. The sight of the T-Rex's mouth is terrifying... and then it helps him stand and seems genuinely concerned that a child (Arlo) is out here alone. From here, the T-Rex family is shown to be the absolute opposite of this trope.

* AnAesop: Provides a few lessons to learn from.
** Courage isn't about not being afraid. It's about not letting your fear prevent you from getting things done.
** Fear, like nature, isn't a force to be triumphed over or mastered, and nothing good can come of trying. It's simply a part of life -- something to be worked around, and worked with.
** We are all related to our parents and nothing can change that, for [[GoodParents better]] or for [[AbusiveParents worse]]. But we are also our own person despite that. As Arlo's Dad puts it in a nutshell: "[[ArcWords You are me and more]]."

* FightForTheLastBite: After Thunderclap devours a small animal, the tail of the creature is left dangling on the side of Thunderclap’s beak. Coldfront and Downpour then start a fight against their leader where all three of them start tugging for the last scrap of food before Thunderclap pushes both of his lackies down to remind them who is in charge.
