* TalkingHeads: Averted.
* TheDogBitesBack: Jared, in "Terrorarium."

* OffModel: Justified with the character designs due to the crew intending for artists to not stick to models. However, there are times where the show plays the trope straight due to layouts and bits of animation being done on crunched deadlines. Sometimes these will be corrected during production, but other times they'll just run with the mistakes as a gag (such as Jared's varying finger count, or coloring blips).
** There's also an intentionally-invoked example in "The Budding of the Warbuxx", where Paul complains about all the continuity errors in a movie that the inmates have to watch- while his skintone suddenly matches that of the white inmates', and his tattoos vanish.
** Layering errors tend to happen every now and then, along with clean-up artists sometimes not using the correct line width for some characters and objects within a scene.

* ExcitedShowTitle: If the "!" is any indication.

* LittlestCancerPatient: Cancer (San-ser). The fact that she's also the little girl whose father Jacknife killed in the first episode doesn't help -- [[WordOfGod the creators confirmed this.]]

* [[OnlySaneEmployee Liz Lemon Job]]: Jared's job description in a nutshell.

* OnlySaneMan: Jared, and even ''he'' is a bit nutters.

* TookALevelInBadass: The Warden, Jared, and Jailbot's future selves in "The Time Police".

* TriangRelations: Type 5. Jared has a closeted crush on The Warden, The Warden lusts after Alice, and Alice is too good for them.
** Really Alice is only interested in rough and tumble vicious killers, i.e. the inmates..

* Jared: The Warden's vertically challenged and neurotic assistant, trying to recover from virtually every addiction imaginable. Often the ButtMonkey of both the prison and his co-workers. He harbors a crush on the Warden that he sublimates into sycophantic behavior.

Controlling the jail is [[RealityWarper the Warden]] ([[InkSuitActor David Wain]]), an eccentric and twisted Willy Wonka lookalike with a flair for the dramatic and a face like Josef Mengele. Joining him are:

* SlapstickKnowsNoGender: Men and women get butchered in over the top gory ways, unless they're the main cast or recurring. When Superjail inmates are mixed with Ultraprison ones, they can both be seen killing each other and getting killed by the prison.

* MediumBlending: Live action hobo Warden at the end of "The Dream Machine".
** Also in "The Dream Machine", the Warden discovers that Jailbot dreams about being his son, and that sequence is animated in [[UncannyValley very creepy CGI.]]

* SomethingCompletelyDifferent: The episode "The Budding of the Warbuxx" has no opening sequence, no Jacknife, almost no violence and is almost entirely focused on the Twins and Alice (aside from a B-plot about Ash overcoming his fear). This is due to the fact they had to cut the opening sequence for time purposes. An incomplete storyboarded version can be seen on the season 2 DVD, though the opening idea was later reused for "Oedipus Mess".

* YesMan: Jared could give [[TheSimpsons Smithers]] a run for his money.

* LittlestCancerPatient: Cancer ([[ItIsPronouncedTroPAY San-ser]]). The fact that she's also the little girl whose father Jacknife killed in the first episode doesn't help -- [[WordOfGod the creators confirmed this.]]

* Alice: The muscular, {{transgender}} prison guard. The Warden has a crush on her (though is initially unaware of her trans status), but regulations prevent them from dating... not that Alice would want to, anyway.

* ActionGirl: Alice.
* UsefulNotes/AdobeFlash: The show was initially animated in a much earlier version of Flash (for the pilot and season 1), since the line quality was much better than the more recent versions. But they eventually had to switch over to the later versions by Adobe, and it was remarked that it was trickier to work with due to the different brushes and line quality.
** Adobe After Effects is also utilized for the compositing of the introduction sequences, as well as being used for some of the glowing effects in season 1.
* TheAlcatraz: The eponymous prison. See the trope entry for more details.

* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: Alice certainly does. And Jacknife is, apparently, quite the charmer when he's not in jail.
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: [[WordOfGod Alice's profile]] states that she wants the inmates to love her and see her as gorgeous, but that she terrifies them and so she brutalizes them for not returning her feelings. The Warden has a crush on Alice, who won't give him the time of day as she has no interest in him (and that dating coworkers is against the regulations anyway). Alice has her eye more on "Sweet Cheeks", who is terrified of her and is regularly assaulted by her.

* AllThereInTheScript: Some characters, specifically Ash, only had their names listed in the scripts. Although this is averted in some cases if the character becomes more recurring, or in other cases, didn't start with a name but actually received one with their increased role (such as Jean and Paul).

* The Twins: CreepyTwins from another planet with a Eurobeat theme song, whose sole purpose appears to be to cause as much havoc as possible inside the jail for their own amusement, sabotaging everything the Warden cooks up.

* InVinoVeritas: Jared.
* InfantImmortality: Averted ''horribly''. However, in one of these cases, it is babies killing other babies, so...
** Played straight and weaponized in "Oedipus Mess" by Jacknife, who throws newborn babies to Jailbot, knowing that he'll stop pursuing him to save them. Jailbot then rescues them and still kicks Jacknife's ass.

* TheJailer: The Warden.

** Also in season 2 episode "Ghosts" where it is revealed that Superjail [[Film/{{Poltergeist}} was built over an ancient Mayincatec sacred place]] where human sacrifices were performed.

* IncestIsRelative: [[{{Twincest}} The Twins.]] Maybe.

* {{Expy}}: Lord Stingray is an obvious parody of [[GIJoe Cobra Commander]].

* PetTheDog: In the first few minutes of the Pilot, Jacknife is released from (normal) prison, and immediately hijacks a car, killing the driver... before noticing a little girl in the back seat. Seeing a bunny on her shirt, he drives up to a pet store and tries to steal one for her. Aww...(?) Somewhat ironically, Jailbot apprehends Jacknife for the first time as he commits what is probably the only good, unselfish act he's ever done.
** Although considering how Jacknife crashed the car and shoved the rabbit down his pants.... it's more than likely he just wanted to fuck it.

The series's trademark is that by the end of each episode, there will be a long sequence of nothing but surreal carnage from corner to corner of the screen. Also of note is the series' SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome, with detailed and highly expressive animation often running at twice the usual framerate of normal animation.
