* TheseHandsHaveKilled: Duane was pretty shaken up by his first kill, ashamed of the dishonorable technique he used and that he was upset about the way the guy he killed screamed because he's from a religion that values warriors. He tries sending Sarthos away asking what's stopping him from killing them too if he was willing to use a core leach without thinking about it, but they point out killing in self defense is quite far from killing a friend.

* TongueTrauma: Quigley describes the punishment of a mage who didn't renew his license in time in Alderode. The poor man's pymric companion was crushed and his tongue and hands cut off, which the Aseptics called a mercy.

* MagicFeather: A rather dark example. [[spoiler:Sette has a special pymaric pendant that was given to her by Bastion to control Duane, which she initially only uses at night to guide him while he is a mindless plod, but eventually starts using more aggressively to control him when he does things she doesn't like. At the end of book 1, she attempts to come clean about using it to control him, only for him to reveal that it is mere costume jewelry with some pain memories attached to it to disguise its mundanity from Sette who can smell Khert related things. It turns out that Sette herself can control memories of any kind, whether they be Red Eels which are concentrated painful memories, or Duane, who as a soul attached to a rotting body animated by a pymaric device, is essentially a giant bag of memories. Duane is immediately horrified by the implications of this and what it means for his personal agency.]]

His wife countered that he deserved it on [[TheArchmage his own merits]], he'd be BreakingTheGlassCeiling for their [[FantasticCasteSystem caste]], and they could use the money.

* AnAesop: WarIsHell is pretty well hammered in, between the atrocities, the broken child soldiers and the way Duane reacts when he tries to tell a rousing battle story without the protection of his mind letting him overlook the horrors of war and paint things in a savory light. This is paired with a heaping dose of fanatic nationalism makes one a fool and monster wiling to betray the morals one would otherwise stand by.

* TheManBehindTheMan: On several levels. [[spoiler:Stockyard is secretly helping Starfish and the Red Berry Boys transport the silver, which Cutter engineered and Stockyard and Elan claim is being abetted by the Queen of Cresce. * TheManBehindTheMan: On several levels. [[spoiler:Stockyard is secretly helping Starfish and the Red Berry Boys transport the silver, which Cutter engineered and the 'two-toe henchman' ''invented''. Stockyard and Elan claim the silver experiment is being abetted by the Queen of Cresce.Cresce; it isn't, but that's because she's busy funding a ''brainwashing / HumongousMecha'' scheme that requires mass heresy. Meanwhile, Stockyard captures Duane on what he claims was Nary Frummagem's instruction, and Nary was commissioned to return Duane to Alderode by the Aldish Lord Winalils, who was responsible for Duane's reanimation in the first place. And finally, Lady Ilganyag sits in her Khert throne as TheChessmaster, using clairvoyance of all timelines to manipulate the entire cast into creating a monster that can 'fix everything' - and by fix, we mean 'kill a lot of people so the grieving survivors live in a slightly better world'.]]
