* FantasticRacism: Invoked twice. Humans hold low opinions of fairies, and many characters doubt Modeus’ level of awareness.

* PlotDrivingSecret: Lucia’s hiding the fact that she’s a fairy ([[and the fact that she’s hiding a fairy in her room]]), Modeus is hiding the fact that he can talk, and Baynard and Peres are hiding the fact that they’re dating.

* AnimatedArmor: Modeus. Quite scary-looking, with clawed hands, spikes and a skull-like face. most of the time, but dangerous in a fight.

* BanOnMagic: Not an actual ban, but magic is highly regulated. Only a handful of people are licensed mages, and unlawful use of magic is strongly prosecuted. [[spoiler: Norrix's mother escaped her home country when it was being torn apart by unrestrained spell casting, so it seems to be pretty justified.]]

* BuryYourGays: [[spoiler: Lucia's fathers prior to canon.]]

In a fantasy world where humans are in conflict with fairies, a human king returns from a journey with a young girl, Lucia, that he wishes to become a lady-in-waiting to his daughter, Princess Kirsi. They hit it off as friends, and she settles into palace life.

Just one catch -- Lucia is a fairy, with a pair of butterfly wings on her back that she has to keep carefully hidden under her clothing. If discovered she could face anything from imprisonment to TorchesAndPitchforks.

One day, at a royal tournament, a new challenger is introduced: a suit of AnimatedArmor created by the CourtMage. It trounces the competition and earns the right to bestow a rose upon the lady of its choice, choosing Lucia. The king and audience are amused by the whole thing, but Lucia is touched by the gesture, and finds herself drawn to the construct, which she names Modeus. The mute Modeus seems to return her regard, becoming protective of her.

* AnimatedArmor: Modeus. Quite scary-looking, with clawed hands, spikes and a skull-like face. He's a GentleGiant most of the time, but not if you threaten Lucia.
* TheApprentice: Norrix asks Lucia to become his apprentice, partly because he's attracted to her.
* ArrangedMarriage: Princess Kirsi is betrothed to a prince. She's (initially) excited and has romantic notions about it, but her husband-to-be does not seem interested in her, barely willing to even chat.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Don't theaten Lucia. Modeus will go from GentleGiant to Terminator Robot ''very'' quickly.
* BuryYourGays: Lucia is sympathetic to Baynard and Peres, [[spoiler: because she was originally raised by two fathers before they were killed.]]
* ClosetGay: Sir Baynard and his servant Peres are in a SecretRelationship, even though he makes a show of being a ladies man in public. When Lucia discovers them, she promises to keep it secret, since she was raised by two fathers who were killed in a HomophobicHateCrime.

* TheFairFolk: They're in conflict with humans, although the war doesn't seem to be hot at the moment. Fairy folk are not welcome in the kingdom, though, being subject to immediate arrest.
* GentleGiant: As long as you're not a threat to Lucia, Modeus is much nicer than his scary appearance would suggest.
* ItIsDehumanising: Several characters use "it" or "thing" to refer to fairies. Also Modeus.

* {{Protectorate}}: Modeus is assigned to guard Lucia after the court falsely comes to believe that TheFairFolk are targeting her. Little do they realize she ''is'' one of them.
* SecretRelationship: Sir Baynard and his servant Peres. Homophobia seems to be alive and well in their kingdom.

* SpoiledSweet: Kirsi. Our first introduction to her as an adult paints her as lazy and a little spoiled, but she clearly values Lucia and cares for her wellbeing.
* TheSpeechless: Modeus at first. He gradually learns to speak (haltingly) around Lucia, although it's not clear how since he doesn't have the physical parts for it. He seems to want to hide it from most people except Lucia, Baynard and Peres.

* BuryYourGays: Lucia is sympathetic to Baynard and Peres, because she was originally raised by two fathers before they were killed.

* ItIsDehumanising: Several characters use "it" or "thing" to refer to fairies.

* TheSpeechless: Modeus at first. He gradually learns to speak (haltingly) around Lucia, although it's not clear how since he doesn't have the physical parts for it. He seems to want to hide it from Norrix.

* SitcomArchNemesis: Modeus to Baynard. Baynard is irked over Modeus defeating him in the tournament, and Modeus first learns to curse by calling him an ass. They appear to be veering towards VitriolicBestBuds.

* TheSpeechless: Modeus at first. He gradually learns to speak (haltingly) around Lucia, although it's not clear how since he doesn't have the physical parts for it. He seems to want to hide it from Norrix.

* CourtMage: Norrix. Magic is considered dangerous and highly regulated, with Norrix being the only person legally permitted to use it.

* CrackShip: Invoked. People who perceive Lucia's attraction to Modeus think it's humorous or weird.
