Toph and Katara have inexplicably taken up residence in an Earth Kingdom estate owned by Toph's family where they spend their days [[{{Soaperizing}} monologuing and pining]] after their One True Loves (Aang and Zuko, respectively). Oh, [[MyFriendsAndZoidberg and Sokka is there too apparently]]. Elsewhere, unbeknownst to the girls, Aang and Zuko also pine after their true loves.

Zuko discovers that his jealous wife Mai hid Katara's pregnancy from him by hiding the letters revealing the truth, [[WouldHurtAChild and murdered her unborn child]]. After turning his {{Domestic Abuse}}r switch on by beating up and humiliating Mai he runs away from the still-recovering Fire Nation and makes a beeline for Katara's 18th birthday ball, where the StarCrossedLovers joyfully reunite (Aang and Toph also hook up at this event). Unfortunately for them, hell hath no fury like a WomanScorned: Mai is not about to take this lying down, so she enlists the help of a firebending assassin named Sho.

* RealityEnsues: Surprisingly enough, this is played straight when [[spoiler:Azula, while regaining her bending powers]], is hit in the chest with a thrown knife and nearly killed. This proves that 1) [[TalkingIsAFreeAction talking isn't a free action]] and 2) mundane weapons, even seemingly unimpressive ones such as knives, are a threat to benders.

** Zuko is portrayed as a {{Domestic Abuse}}r who would rather be with Katara then to fulfill his duties as Fire Lord.

** Sokka and Katara are supposedly Prince of the Northern Water Tribe and Princess of the Water Tribes by now. We never see them carrying out any duties pertaining to this, aside from attending a [[DancesAndBalls ball]] in Katara's honor. They don't even spend any time in the Water Tribe, preferring to lounge around Toph's estates in the Earth Kingdom instead. This is more justifiable, however, as an heir apparent will not be ruling. Many real-life crown princes also live in relative leisure, especially when young like the protagonists here.

* AdaptationalWimp: Oh man, where to start...

* PrincessClassic: Both Azula and Katara (TheChiefsDaughter at best) get "upgraded" into something vaguely reminiscent of [[Disney/SnowWhite Snow White]]. Azula ''was'' a princess in the show, but is a nicer one in HIBY than the DarkActionGirl she mostly appeared as there.

** Aang lands on Toph's balcony, offers to take her flying, and asks "Do you trust me?" There aren't any lyrics written, but you can practically ''hear'' [[Disney/{{Aladdin}} "A Whole New World"]] in the background.

** When Katara heals Azula from her initial poisoning, she leaves Azula's ninja mask on.

** After finding an injured woman dressed as an assassin, the gang decide not to unmask her.

* ConspicuousCG: A rather odd variant. The only parts of the comic that Diaz actually draws are the characters and their clothes (well, most of them, anyway). Everything else (backgrounds, accessories, props, settings), are photos. Spectacularly few of them are of Diaz's own creation. Strangest of all, the animals are all photos, even ones that were in the show, like the turtleducks and the panda spirit.

** Inverted with Ursa, of all people, who is revealed to be a master firebender.

** Azula, due to her AmnesiacDissonance, as well as having been [[BroughtDownToNormal de-bended]] like her father. Rather than the DarkActionGirl in the series, she is a seemingly kind (if somewhat socially unsmooth) girl with a MysteriousPast. Though then her memories slowly start returning, and [[spoiler:she gets her powers back. In the sequel comic, she is more of a LadyOfWar.]]

** Azula, we hardly knew ye. She's absolutely ''nothing'' like her badass original counterpart. In fact, she hardly ever does ''anything'' in the comic beside hang out with Katara and Sokka.
