The town of Crowshed was founded in the mid-nineteenth century by a young man named Hugh L. Maine. Maine had a very peculiar way of serving as mayor, and began acting as the judge, jury, and executioner for any and all legal proceedings in the town. As more people were being sentenced to death for smaller and smaller offenses, there was an increasing amount of reported paranormal activity. After Maine's sudden inexplicable death in 1881, his successor instituted a plan to completely lock Crowshed away from the outside world, effectively trapping it in a technological and cultural stasis.

The comic follows Sheryl, the newest employee of the Crowshed Department of Paranormal Investigation, and Elba Hart, a friendly ghost-detective who operates a machine that creates temporary projections of dead townspeople, as the duo interview projections of victims in order to find the murderers.
