The timing was unfortunate for the show, because just before its release, the new TV series was announced for 2005. ''Scream of the Shalka'' and its Ninth Doctor were deemed "alternate universe", and the series is not considered part of the {{Whoniverse}} canon.

An English village is attacked by lava creatures called Shalka. The Doctor arrives to fight off the Shalka, but they have implanted pods in people's heads, leading humanity in a global scream that will terraform the Earth into a Shalka habitat.

When a small village in England is attacked by hypnotic lava bug monsters called Shalka, the Ninth Doctor (RichardEGrant) manages to save a woman named Alison and her boyfriend, Joe. The two are on the verge of a boredom-induced breakup, and Alison happily follows the Doctor to become his next companion.

The Doctor, however, has stopped taking on companions due to some unspecified trauma, and is instead now happily [[WordOfGay dating]] the Master (Sir DerekJacobi), who lives in the TARDIS in an android body. The Doctor teams up with the military (somewhat reluctantly) to try and stop the Shalka from taking over the rest of the Earth. But Alison is hypnotised and has a pod implanted into her head, which causes her -- and many others around the world -- to lead humanity in a global scream that will terraform the Earth into a Shalka habitat.

The Doctor tries to talk some sense into the Shalka, but he can't convince them to just live underneath the Earth's crust and let the humans be. So, he digs out the pod in Alison's head, swallows it, reprograms it with his own Time Lord DNA and shoves it back into Alison so that she can telepathically halt the screaming humans. The Doctor confronts the Shalka with a scream of his own, and just to mix things up a bit, he defeats them by singing "[[{{Cabaret}} Life Is A Cabaret]]".

In the aftermath, the Master convinces the Doctor to take Alison along as a companion.
