** Bob the Table-Headed Service Drone from "[[Recap/InvaderZimS1E28Hobo13 Hobo 13]]" briefly appears in episode 1 where he's holding up a bag of donuts for Purple before getting shoved to the floor by the latter.

** A lot of characters have their designs changed so that their heads seem less oversized and better proportioned to the rest of their bodies. This is especially noticeable with shorter characters like Dib and Gaz.

* VillainProtagonist: Tallest Red and Purple are the main protagonists this time, both of whom are lazy, self-absorbed tyrants who've enslaved and destroyed hundreds of planets over the course of Operation Impending Doom II. The first episode opens with them about to use the Massive's superlaser to blow up an inhabited planet before they're stopped by the Resisty.

The story follows Red and Purple, the [[EvilOverlord Almighty Tallest]] of the Irken Empire, who find themselves on the run from [[LaResistance the Resisty]] after a shocking attack on the Massive leaves them both stranded on planet Earth. With no hope of rescue and few options left, the Tallest must recruit the help of Zim and the Membrane family to save themselves and the Irken Armada from its new ruler. But with the Resisty still strong and TheEmpire collapsing, will they get back to power in time to fix things? Or will they be destroyed by the corrupted empire they created?

* FacialMarkings: The BigBad Medea has a black tattoo on her forehead of a triangular symbol similar to those used by Irken Elites. Interestingly, the trailer briefly shows a younger Purple also having the same marking on his forehead and the artwork for this [[https://youtu.be/szAfDG7VrNw demo song]] shows that Zim, Red, Skoodge, and Spork all used to have the same forehead marking when they were younger as well.

** The Resisty's spaceship in the original show was hopelessly outclassed by the Massive and the only reason it wasn't vaporized on the spot was because the Massive's weapons systems had been disabled at the time as a result of Zim remotely hijacking its power core. In ''AVTP'', the Resisty's spaceship takes out the Massive in ''two shots''. It's also worth noting that, unlike before, the ship did this all on its own without any outside interference.

** The Resisty in canon were laughably pathetic RevolutionariesWhoDontDoAnything that mostly limited themselves to petty acts of rebellion like [[PokeThePoodle stealing snacks]] from the Tallest. Here, they are depicted as more of an actual threat. In the first episode alone, they come closer to overthrowing the Irken Empire than they ever did in the original show; they cripple the Massive and come within inches of assassinating the Almighty Tallest.

This is especially bad for Red [[KillItWithWater since Earth's water is harmful to his skin]]; he reacts to the sudden downpour by lampshading this trope.

* PlotMandatedFriendshipFailure: In the very first episode, Red and Purple go their separate ways following a heated argument caused by Red lashing out at Purple due to the high stress from having a damaged PAK and Purple in turn getting fed up with Red's insults.

* TakingTheBullet: In episode 1, Red pushes Purple out of the way when a Resisty assassin shoots at him with their pistol. Instead of hitting Purple, the shot grazes Red across the back and causes severe damage to his PAK.

* TheWorfEffect: The first episode's ActionPrologue has the Massive, the planet-sized flagship of the feared Irken Armada, get ambushed by the Resisty and knocked out of the fight without ever getting the chance to fire its weapons.

* DudeNotFunny: An in-universe example. In the first episode, Purple starts giggling after accidentally causing Red to feel a jolt of pain while attempting to repair the latter's damaged PAK. Purple wasn't laughing at Red's misfortune and was merely trying to lighten the mood, but this proves to be the last straw for Red since he's in an incredibly stressful situation and could potentially die if his PAK isn't fixed soon.

* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: The rest of the Irken Armada is nowhere to be seen when the Massive comes under attack by the Resisty in episode 1. This is especially odd since the scene almost immediately preceding the attack had shown the Massive being escorted by dozens of smaller ships.

* MotiveMisidentification: When the Tallest find themselves cornered by heavily-armed Resisty members in episode 1, Purple tries to defuse the situation by offering to surrender all his snacks, assuming that was what they wanted. Unfortunately for him, the Resisty are actually there to assassinate the Tallest. Lard Nar reacts to Purple's offer by staring blankly at him in confusion before calmly shaking his head and nodding at his men to open fire.

* SecondaryCharacterTitle: Despite his name being in the series' full title, Zim isn't the main protagonist here. Instead, the plot centers around the Almighty Tallest and explores what happens when they get stuck on Earth.
