episode-specific tropes are moved to corresponding recap pages

!!Tropes for "The Spring Snow Incident" include:
* AdaptationDistillation: "The Spring Snow Incident" is a short episode compared to the game, so the battles are shortened and some events are truncated.
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: Sakuya asks Reimu, "I wonder, if someone dies in the Netherworld, will she rest in peace?", leaving Reimu to consider if she would leave Marisa at Yuyuko's mercy because of her laziness.
* {{Bizarrchitecture}}: How Mayohiga is depicted as Marisa [[ScoobyDoobyDoors chases Chen around]] in it.
* BystanderSyndrome: Reimu... initially.
* CallForward: Marisa's complaint about hearing youkai underestimating humans again refers to Patchouli's similar comment in the next episode.
* DemotedToExtra: The anime usually has all the playable characters be involved in the incident, but here Sakuya simply shows up and makes Reimu do her job, rather than be involved directly.
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: The end credits for this episode display a motion comic with SuperDeformed versions of the cast when all later episodes (except [[CreditsMontage episode 7]]) have their end credits display black-and-white artwork of stylized versions of characters relevant to the episode.
* GracefulLoser: Yuyuko, just before Reimu defeats her with Fantasy Seal.
* GravityScrew: Marisa flies upward through the portal into the Netherworld, then hits what seems to be a ceiling until her POV inverts and she finds herself lying on the ground at the foot of the ridiculously long staircase.
* ImpossibleThief: How can you steal ''Spring?''
* ItsAllUpstairsFromHere: The path to the Netherworld.
* RammingAlwaysWorks: Marisa overcomes Youmu's swordsmanship by ramming her with her broom.
* ReflectionlessUselessEyes: Yuyuko is the only character who doesn't have white reflections in her eyes. This is to emphasize that she's a ghost.
* SarcasmMode: Reimu's apology to Marisa for not realizing that the cold weather was an incident. Fansubbers translate this line in a variety of ways.
* ThemeMusicPowerUp: Reimu gets this when she rescues Marisa from Yuyuko.
* WhatTheHellHero: Sakuya gives a very mild version to Reimu for not going out to deal with the incident.
* XanatosGambit: [[spoiler: Even though Yuyuko's plan to make the Saigyou Ayakashi blossom failed, at least it provided a distraction to allow Sanae to enter Gensokyo]].

!!Tropes for "The Red Mist Incident, Part 1" include:
* BigFancyHouse: The Scarlet Devil Mansion is depicted here as looking exactly like the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Château_Frontenac Château Frontenac]] with the [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Ben Elizabeth Tower]] grafted onto it.
* BroughtDownToNormal: Utsuho, as she's seen partying at the Moriya shrine following the events of ''Subterranean Animism'' with her wings shrunken down and her third leg not present on her right arm.
* TheCameo: Over 30 ''Touhou'' characters are visible at the Moriya shrine.
* CatSmile: [[CatGirl Rin]], of course, and Koakuma have one.
* CreepyChild: Flandre, who asks Marisa to play with her because she always breaks her toys. To drive it even further home, she squeezes her teddy bear so hard that its head bursts.
* {{Fangirl}}: What Koakuma is portrayed as towards Patchouli.
* FramingDevice: Marisa is retelling the events of ''Embodiment of Scarlet Devil'' to Sanae while everyone is partying at the Moriya shrine after ''Subterranean Animism''.
* LaughingMad: Flandre when Marisa agrees to play with her.
* LipLock: Fandubs make it quite noticeable that dialogue isn't paced alongside the animation. Cirno's rant after being brushed aside by Marisa, in particular, stands out for being rushed.
* LittleMissSnarker: With the setting being post-''Subterranean Animism'', Nitori is in top form.
** LaserGuidedKarma: Her remark about the Moriyas constantly causing incidents gets her punted through the roof by Kanako.
* MadwomanInTheAttic: Flandre, naturally in the basement. This adaptation expands on it.
* AnOddPlaceToSleep: Flandre sleeps in a coffin that's placed on a bed--that is, if she were present.
* RedSkyTakeWarning: Created as part of Remilia's plan.
* RepeatCut: As Marisa presents her mini-Hakkero to Patchouli.
* SmallNameBigEgo:
** Cirno repeatedly boasts about her power to Marisa before Marisa flies to the Scarlet Devil Mansion, only to get ignored at every opportunity.
** Patchouli plans on cutting Marisa's ego down to size after Marisa boasts that normal humans can use magic too and that she'll exterminate the lot of them by herself.
* SomethingAboutARose: A rose motif frequently appears as decoration in the Scarlet Devil Mansion, including the lid of Flandre's coffin.
* SpannerInTheWorks: Marisa proves to be a minor one to the Scarlet Devil Mansion crew, as she forces Patchouli out to subdue Flandre.
* StalkerWithoutACrush: Reimu is apparently sharp enough to know when she's being spied on by Yukari, who wants to party with the rest, but isn't comfortable around [[AMindIsATerribleThingToRead Sat]][[PowerIncontinence ori]].

!!Tropes for "The Red Mist Incident, Part 2" include:
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: Sakuya seems to be under the mindset that, with her time powers, she would be feared by the humans living in Gensokyo if she were to reveal them. Reimu is quick to point out that those sorts of powers are a dime a dozen in Gensokyo, however.
* BarbieDollAnatomy: The {{fanservice}} provided by Yukari, Ran and Chen soaking in the hot spring is limited to this.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: Marisa showing Flandre some pity and affection is all the latter needs to [[spoiler:pull a HeelFaceTurn and team up with her against Remilia]].
* CatsHateWater: Chen is very reluctant to get into the hot spring. [[SuperDrowningSkills And for good reason.]]
* {{Cliffhanger}}: The episode ends with [[spoiler: Flandre confronting Remilia stating that she plans to defeat her if it means she can go outside]].
* CoolBigSis: In this continuity, it's not Remilia who acts like this toward Flandre, but Marisa. Justified since in the original story, Remilia's take on the relationship between herself and Flandre isn't known, and Marisa being Flandre's friend is widely-accepted in fanon.
* CurbStompBattle: Reimu's "battle" with Meiling which basically has Meiling getting ready to fight, followed by Reimu just shooting a dense blast of danmaku which a few scenes later is revealed to have knocked her out and punched a hole through the gate behind her.
* DidYouDie: Sanae tearfully asks Marisa this after the {{cliffhanger}} from the previous episode. Reimu provides the obligatory LampshadeHanging about what a stupid question this is, but [[CuteGhostGirl Yuyuko]] waves afterward, indicating [[DeathIsCheap a possible justification for the question]].
* FightUnscene: Between Marisa vs. Patchouli and Reimu vs. Sakuya, few attacks are seen directly; even during Sakuya's attacks, animation doesn't go all out, as her time-stopping capabilities fill in.
* FlamingSword: Flandre's Laevatein, which she creates out of fire itself [[spoiler: before confronting Remilia]]. This is consistent with the way Laevatein is described in ''[[AllThereInTheManual The Grimoire of Marisa]]''.
* FlechetteStorm: Sakuya creates [[http://oi39.tinypic.com/281xawn.png a very dense field of knives]] in front of Reimu. [[spoiler: Unfortunately for Sakuya, [[NoIAmBehindYou that's not actually Reimu she's targeting]].]]
* ImplacableMan: [[spoiler:After Sakuya falls into Reimu's trap, Reimu is absolutely ruthless in taking her down.]]
* MythologyGag: [[spoiler:During the Sakuya fight Reimu uses the Infinite Dimensional Rift skill from ''Hisoutensoku'' in order to trap her.]]
* NeverBringAKnifeToAGunFight: Like in most fanworks, martial artist Meiling + giant laser danmaku = one very smokey gatekeeper and one very destroyed gate. [[spoiler:The only difference from the status quo is that it's ''Reimu'' who fires the giant laser instead of Marisa, since the latter had already snuck into the mansion.]]
* NinjaLog: [[spoiler:Reimu creates an illusory duplicate of herself with her {{Paper Talisman}}s and tricks Sakuya into stabbing it.]]
* OhCrap: Meiling's reaction to Reimu pretty much starting and ending their "fight" with an extremely fast blast of danmaku.
* SlasherSmile: Remilia has one [[spoiler:when she accepts Flandre's challenge at the end of the episode.]]
* TroubledFetalPosition: Flandre stays in one while trapped in the water sphere while Marisa and Patchouli fight.
* WeaksauceWeakness: [[spoiler:Being able to stop time isn't helpful if you can't even ''move'', Sakuya.]]

!!Tropes for "The Red Mist Incident, Part 3" include:
* AdaptationalWimp: In the games, [[spoiler:Flandre was the StrongerSibling of the Scarlet Sisters. Here, she struggles to just keep up against Remilia and, while Remilia ends the fight with a [[CoolDownHug hug]], the older sister was clearly the victor by that point.]] Though it is shown at the end that she's [[TookALevelInBadass much stronger in the present]], the Trope still applies since she's shown to be merely [[spoiler:fighting her sister on equal terms.]]
* AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther: [[spoiler:Remilia and Flandre in the second half of the episode. They challenge the heroines hand-in-hand, and after Reimu defeats them, they are found lying unconscious, hand-in-hand once again, with peaceful smiles on their faces.]]
* BeamOWar: No less than two instances. First, Remilia's Gungnir versus Flandre's Laevateinn, then Remilia's Gungnir versus Marisa's Master Spark.
* BrickJoke: Nitori, who was kicked out of the shrine in Part 1, is seen in TheStinger of this episode [[spoiler: stumbling upon Shou and Nazrin preparing to unseal Byakuren.]]
* CoolDownHug: [[spoiler:Remilia gives Flandre one to stop Flandre's rebellion against her.]]
* TheGloriousWarOfSisterlyRivalry: Sakuya is moved to tears that Remilia and Flandre having fights with each other is such a big improvement over their previous relationship.
* LetsYouAndHimFight: After finding out that Marisa basically provoked Flandre to attack Remilia, Reimu is only too happy to let Flandre take care of the incident by herself. [[spoiler:Unfortunately, Remilia quickly pacifies Flandre, and the ensuing fight becomes a two-on-two battle.]]
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Marisa successfully incites Flandre to rebel against Remilia. After a short scuffle, however, Remilia embraces Flandre and apologizes for everything she did, mending their relationship, and adding a powerful adversary.
* ThemeTuneExtended: The opening theme for this episode is the second half of the piece used as the opening theme of "The Red Mist Incident Part 2".
* ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill: Reimu ends the battle against the Scarlet sisters with a giant Yin Yang Orb ''several times the size of the Scarlet Devil Mansion''.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: Flandre, but 495 years of being ignored has caused her to act out. [[spoiler:She gets better.]]
* WeCanRuleTogether: [[spoiler:Remilia attempts to subdue Flandre's rebellion against her with this.]] [[spoiler:It works, because Flan only wanted to go outside in the first place, and that was Remilia's goal at the outset.]]

!!Tropes for "The Flower Incident, Part 1" include:
* BadassFingerSnap: Sakuya does a neat snap with her fingers to end her time stop and catch Aya in a DeathInAllDirections.
* BreatherEpisode: There's no incident to be resolved, so everybody in Gensokyo is [[SliceOfLife going about their daily lives as usual]].
* CastHerd:
** The opening displays [[SuperpowerLottery Yukari Yakumo]], [[CuteGhostGirl Yuyuko Saigyouji]], [[OurGodsAreDifferent Kanako Yasaka]], and [[TheMedic Eirin Yagokoro]] in order, the "[[ReallySevenHundredYearsOld Old Maids Alliance]]."
** [[AnIcePerson Cirno]], [[FriendToBugs Wriggle Nightbug]], [[TheFairFolk Daiyousei]], and [[CastingAShadow Rumia]], "[[RagtagBunchOfMisfits Team]] [[TheDitz (9)]]," also appear in a scene with Yuuka.
* {{Cliffhanger}}: The episode ends with [[spoiler:Eiki approaching Mystia's stand, stating she's finally found what she's been looking for]].
* DidWeJustHaveTeaWithCthulhu: [[BoisterousWeakling Cirno]] is shown [[OutOfCharacter scared to death, sweating and trembling with knees shaking]] when confronted by [[TheDreaded Yuuka]] in her field of flowers. Wriggle, Daiyousei, and Rumia (see CastHerd) watch from out of sight in stunned silence as Yuuka [[BaitAndSwitch puts a flower in the still-frightened Cirno's hair.]]
* LighterAndSofter: Medicine Melancholy looks incredibly cute and doesn't show any sign of her NietzscheWannabe personality. Then again, she doesn't really have a grudge against Lunarians and probably knows she can't do anything to them.
* OhCrap: Tewi gets this when she falls for Reisen's WoundedGazelleGambit.
** The same happens when Cirno ends up stumbling across [[TheDreaded Yuuka.]]
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Yuuka is set up as TheDreaded by having the normally boisterous and fearless Cirno absolutely terrified of her.
* SliceOfLife: The episode follows Aya, who's trying to make a news story out of the titular incident. Unfortunately for her, said incident isn't actually dangerous, and everybody she comes across are just going about their daily business as usual.
* SuperScream: When playing in the garden, Flandre ends up pulling a mandragora out of its pot of soil. The ensuing scream ends up knocking out Meiling, Koakuma, and Patchouli and stunning Sakuya, Remilia, and Flandre herself and keeps going until Flandre uses her ability to destroy it.
* WoundedGazelleGambit: Tewi gives Reisen a non-lethal dose of poison as a prank. Reisen pretends to fall over dead, then grabs Tewi's leg as she walks past her and force-feeds her the rest of the poison.

!!Tropes for "The Flower Incident, Part 2" include:
* BoobBasedGag: When Eiki starts lecturing Komachi at Mystia's food cart, the latter stands up and hits the former in the face with her breasts.
* TheBore: Eiki is so infamous for giving long-winded lectures that she transcends this trope to become TheDreaded.
* OhCrap:
** The look everyone gets when Eiki is about to lecture them.
** Aya's photo captures the moment of comprehension Marisa has when she realizes that she just accidentally punched the Yama in the face.
* RightBehindMe: Youmu and Komachi complain about working under Yuyuko and Eiki respectively until the latter appears right behind them.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: Marisa and Suika try to avoid Eiki's lecture, Marisa via broom and Suika fading into mist. It's Reimu's attempt to hold them in place that leads to the OhCrap moment.
* SequelHook: [[spoiler:TheStinger shows Kanako and Suwako plotting against the Hakurei Shrine, leading into the beginning of ''Mountain of Faith''.]]
* StockSoundEffects: Eiki's lecture to Aya, Youmu, and Komachi uses what appear to be Donald Duck sound effects as it goes on for hours.

!!Tropes for "The Mysterious Giant Youkai" include:
* AdaptationalHeroism: While she wasn't evil in ''Hisoutensoku'', Alice helps Daiyousei track down Cirno rather than using Cirno as a test subject for the Goliath Doll.
* AdaptedOut:
** While Meliing's and Sanae's stories are alluded to, they don't actually happen in this adaptation.
** Cirno doesn't fight Sanae, Marisa, and Alice like she does in ''Hisoutensoku''.
* TheCameo:
** Byakuren, Nazrin, and Shou can be seen at the Youkai Mountain stall.
** Alice's Goliath Doll shows up at the end of the episode.
* CreditsMontage: The end credits play over a montage of all of Cirno's appearances in the previous episodes.
* ItsProbablyNothing: Koishi suggests this to Satori when she wonders to herself if [[TheDitz Utsuho]] was the best pick to guard Former Hell. Little does Satori know that as she speaks Utsuho is attempting to melt Cirno.
* KansasCityShuffle: Alice helps Daiyousei and Cirno look for the kappa's advertising balloon in order to distract them from realizing that the giant shadow Cirno saw at the beginning of the episode was the Goliath Doll Alice had been experimenting on.
* RunningGag: Cirno managing to accidently freeze Daiyousei while attacking.
* SnotBubble: Meiling has one when she sleeps standing up at her post. (The shape of the bubble looks vaguely like the Giant Catfish, which she's canonically dreaming about.)
* WingdingEyes: Suwako's hat gets swirly eyes after being thrown at Okuu to save Cirno and Daiyousei.
* WrongGenreSavvy: As in the game, Sanae gets very excited when she believes the advertising balloon is a HumongousMecha.

!!Tropes for "The Imperishable Night Incident, Part 1" include:
* AdaptationDistillation: The story focuses primarily on the Border Team and Magic team, with Remilia, Sakuya, Youmu, and Yuyuko only making cameos.
* AdaptedOut: Keine's battle doesn't happen in this version of the tale, even though she shows up.
* EnchantedForest: Alice mentions that according to legend, if you get lost in the Bamboo Forest of the Lost, you'll never come out.
* EnemyMine: Reimu and Yukari team up to solve the ''Imperishable Night'' incident despite being enemies.
* HowDidYouKnowIDidnt: Marisa ends up revealing Eientei completely by accident when she hits it with her Master Spark while trying to hit Reimu.
* LetsYouAndHimFight: Reimu and Marisa end up fighting because Reimu isn't honest about why she's working with Yukari, leading Marisa to believe that they're responsible for the incident, and Yukari decides to let Marisa believe that.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: At the end of the episode, Reisen shows up with a SlasherSmile and her trademark glowing red eyes.

* EarlyBirdCameo: Numerous, but special mention goes to Aya, who is featured prominently in episodes 1 through 4 despite making her debut several games after the ones those episodes cover, as well as Sanae's participation in Imperishable Night's adaptation (even if one was to take liberties with how recent the Moriya Shrine arrival was, there's an entire game between Imperishable Night and Mountain of Faith, which is instead used for the episodes ''before'' Imperishable Night adaptation).

TRS has turned Gainaxing into a definition only page. Removing examples.

* {{Gainaxing}}: When characters with average or above sized breasts appear -- such as Yuyuko, Yuugi, Aya or Sanae -- you can expect them to bounce about if they as much as turn around. Also see WorldOfBuxom.
