[[WMG: Mary Peterson, the sheriff's wife, is Nell's half-sister.]]
This may be inspired by the fact that Robin Mullins, who plays Mary, looks a bit like Jodie Foster. Mary is severely depressed and sometimes has breakdowns in public: Paula asks "what happened to her?" and Jerry says "Nothing and everything. It hits her once in a while." Since her husband is very loving and patient with her, fans speculate that Mary's childhood was badly messed up and that possibly her biological father was the evildoer who raped Violet, and had previously raped Mary's mother. Mary and Nell connect instantly on Mary's first visit, and Mary seems to feel much better after that.
