* One of the visions Raiden sends to his past self is that of Raiden's fight with Taven in Armageddon's Konquest Mode. It's also been confirmed by {{Word of God}} that Shao Kahn is the one who killed Blaze rather than Taven, who curiously isn't visible in MK9's intro cutscene. Going from all of that, when Raiden fought Taven, he did something to prevent Taven from reaching the pyramid and completing his quest, be it killing him or injuring him to the point that he retreated or was left lick his wounds. Whichever happened, Taven didn't get to the pyramid before Shao Kahn killed Blaze and gained his power, giving him enough to kill Raiden and conquer the realms...if Raiden didn't send his visions to his past self.

* It was pointed by Sonya in Nightwolf's chapter in MK9's story mode that Raiden could have been seeing visions of possible futures rather than one single future. [[spoiler: Going from that, even if Shao Kahn is gone forever, he's not the only character who has both the power and personality to make a play for Blaze's power when the time comes. One example being Onaga, who was confirmed to both still exist and to have been the previous ruler of Outworld prior to Shao Kahn overthrowing him in the alternate timeline that most of MK9 occurs in. Another one is Daegon, who considering his ties to the Red Dragon as it's founder as well as how the plans of Argus and Delia have been around for centuries, shouldn't be written off. It will turn out that while Raiden's medallion was fixed, it was only showing visions from the future where Shao Kahn won Armaggeddon and with Shao Kahn's death, the medallion would have been fixed with it either not being capable of accounting for alternate futures or it has yet to be used to send a message from a future where Armageddon was triggered without Shao Kahn]].

[[WMG: Shao Kahn is the One Being.]]

This is an idea that came to me while playing MK9. Towards the end of the story mode, before fighting Raiden, he exclaims "today, I become THE Elder God!", a phrase which really made me think of the One Being and the more I think about it, the more I feel like they are the same person. Here's my evidence: Shao Kahn is incredibly old: he was originally stated to be 10 000 years old, but Armageddon reveals that he is even older than that, leaving his age ambiguous, thus possibly making him as old as the realms themselves, which were created to hold the remnants of the One Being's consciousness. He seeks to merge the realms, which is precisely the One Being's goal as that would allow him to become whole again. He also seems to have a personal grudge against the Elder Gods, as does the One Being.
Here's what I think happened: the One Being's consciousness was divided between the realms by the Elder Gods, but he managed to send himself, or at least part of himself in Outworld as Shao Kahn, where he slew Onaga and became emperor, placing himself in a perfect position to attempt to merge the realms together, thus allowing him to recover his consciousness and his full power. This explains why Kahn is so hell bent on merging the realms rather than just invading them, and in fact doesn't seem to give invasion much thought (yes, it is explained that Sindel prevented him from setting foot to earthrealm but seriously, it took him five hundred years to give removing the ward a try?), as invasion would be useless without the ability to merge the realms.
Finally, some people theorize that Kahn, as well as Onaga, are merely pawns for the One Being to merge the realms, but I disagree as if that is the case, I do not understand what the One Being would gain from having one of his pawns kill the other (and then have him return!). If anything, it would slow down if not impair his progress towards merging the realms. However, if he is Shao kahn, it makes sense as he would see Onaga as a rival since he is attempting to harness the power of the One Being for himself by collecting the Kamidogus.

So ther you have it, my theory for Shao Kahn being a weakened One Being attempting to regain his powers.

Unless they want to drop entirely the Mortal Kombat series, [[VideoGame/MortalKombat3 Netherrealm Studios already got the memo about what happens when you take an Ensemble Darkhorse out of the cast]], and [[WordOfGod Boon]] said that [[SpotlightStealingSquad Mortal Kombat wouldn't be MortalKombat without Scorpion and Sub-Zero]]. The next game may also cover what happened to the 3D games since the TimeyWimeyBall, from 4 onwards. So, in order to get a new Sub-Zero for the next installment, they're going to possibly introduce a new member to the Lin Kuei. Who will he be? Could he be a ''she''?

Due to Bi-Han [[spoiler:already being turned into Noob Saibot]] and Kuai Liang [[spoiler:being turned into Cyber Sub-Zero]], both former carriers of the Sub-Zero codename can't appear in their classic forms. ** Very true. Since the Lin Kuei was planning on converting some of their clan into cyborgs, who's to say they didn't produce a set amount of frames and customize them according to the converted members' uniform colors? Taken even further than that, who's to say they didn't have onboard weaponry ready to load onto each frame to keep the members' abilites consistent with their pre-cybernetization [[PerfectlyCromulentWord (if that word really exists in any dictionary, lemme know)]]? [[MortalKombat9 MK9]] already showed pre-conversion Cyrax and Sektor using relatively mundane versions of the same weaponry they used post-conversion. [[https://twitter.com/K0MB4T/status/102426764302753792 John Vogel from the MK series' art team even hints at it when questioned about it on Twitter.]]

* Sub Boss: [[spoiler: [[BigBad Shinnok]] ]] will likely have his Demon/Beast transformation from [[VideoGame/MortalKombatMythologiesSubZero Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero]] which could be activated each time when his Super meter becomes full and will grant him benefits (e.g. longer reach, a nigh-invulnerable but temporary sheild, and other more powerful versions of his regular moves) until it runs out, but will likely be taken out of the picture halfway through story mode.

[[WMG: Shao-Kahn is a {{Psychopomp}} who was also once the protector of Outrealm.]]
* It's stated in Deception that Shao Kahn was once an advisor like Raiden. It's also stated in one of the reversed dialogues that Shao Kahn, Raiden, and Lucifer are all members of the same race of beings. Both Raiden and Lucifer were guardians of their respective realms (Earthrealm and the Netherrealm), therefore it's not a stretch that Shao Kahn was once the guardian of Outrealm. Shao Kahn being a Psychopomp is based on what abilities Kahn has shown involving souls, especially compared to a sorcerer like Shang Tsung.

** Shinnok as DLC is unlikely since from the looks of things he'll be one of the central villains.

* Bayonetta. A Wii U exclusive to tie with Bayonetta 2, and she's also from a game with lots of {{Gorn}}.
* Link. Another Wii U possibility, while he uses a sword, Kenshi is noted to mostly use a sword for his fighting style plotwise, but in gameplay has plenty of hand-to-hand moves.
