Their use of a runic alphabet that had evolved before the Viking Age seems far more likely to be the community adopting ancient cultural elements and symbols rather than them preserving cultural traditions from before the Viking Age even as the Norse cultures around them evolved.

The real horror comes not from what is going on with the characters, but from what is going on with the viewer. You are lead to become more and more sympathetic of the cult since they offer Dani a supportive family to live in, and when you let yourself think that she will be better off with them, you, the viewer, are supposed to be horrified by the fact that you have fallen for the cult's traps. The film is basically a demo version of what being indoctrinated by a dangerous cult is.
