** The [GROWN] item tag and the existence of 'shaping trees' in Forest Retreats makes it more likely that Elves have super magic bonsai powers and can simply have trees grow into the shape of swords/cages/mugs/whatever, then shed that part like a tree sheds branches.

When Toady announced that magic will be implemented, he stated that it will be based on whatever story has been generated, citing the works of Brandon Sanderson for example as his inspiration. Coupled with his analysis of the Threetoe stories on the Bay12 forums on how the concepts could be implemented in Dwarf Fortress, it's a reasonable assumption that players will be able to mess with the world through the magic system. Is an item responsible for all the fire magic in the world? Just steal it and either keep it for yourself to become the most powerful pyromancer in the world or destroy it to deny this element from everyone else! Does a god control death magic? Kill him and take his place to hold dominion over the souls of your enemies! Players will basically be able to bend the world to their knees by becoming GenreSavvy adventurers who would pore through every mythology to further their quest for power!

[[WMG: There will eventually be a final boss to the Adventure mode]]
And it will be none other than Armok himself. After killing him, the player then becomes the new authority of the universe, they can then end their game there or choose to play in their new divine form in the Fortress mode. Whether they follow in Armok’s footsteps and be a JerkassGod or be a GodOfGood is up to them.

No computer on the planet should be able to handle that much detail. Instead, it hypnotizes the players, making them believe that they are seeing reality in it's entirety represented by ascii characters. The level of the perception filter actually allows members of the [=Bay12=] community to experience a shared hallucination.

* They can't identify if it's elf. They probably think the dwarves have a similar tradition of eating their enemies alive, so they just assume it's a trophy. If they did figure it out, they would be about as horrified as cutting down trees.

Unfortunately, because the elven mass-production process is so shoddy and failure-prone in the first place (it's the lack of [[MagicTool beards]], I tell you), elven artifacts barely count as normal items. Because these strange moods happen so frequently, they form the base of the elven economy, supplemented by catching exotic animals in those strange elven forest retreats with their "artifact" cages.

It fits with elves' magical nature in, well, pretty much every other fantasy setting ever.
