It has often been speculated that Liz is in love with Spike. In The Next Generation, they are still friends but not as close and Caitlin is now Spike's best friend. Maybe Liz came made a move on Spike (while drunk?) and was rejected. The kind Spike didn't reject her for that but things are awkward afterwards and not the same.
