[[WMG: Mr. Kimura is SCP-096 in disguise]]
He was actually a regular dude until he witnessed SCP-096's face when it was accidentally printed in a book (he was only a few pixels big in the photo). After killing him, SCP-096 decided he wanted to be human and wore Mr. Kimura's skin so that he doesn't freak out when people look at him and to evade Foundation capture. His creepy comments towards the girls is him trying (and failing) to mimick normal human behavior.

WMG:Azumanga Daioh takes place in a magical girl or urban fantasy universe viewed from the perspective of background extras
Despite being a grounded, slice-of-life manga that focuses on the decidedly mundane misadventures of a group of high school students, Azumanga Daioh and its spiritual sucessor Yotsuba&! have always had a handful of inexplicable, more fantastical elements that pop up. My theory is that Kiyohiko's original works all take place in a setting akin to Magical Girl shows like Sailor Moon, but viewed from the perspective of background characters who aren't aware of the world's more fantastical elements.

Prior to creating Azumanga Daioh, series' creator Kiyohiko Azuma was writing and drawing the more fantastical manga Wallaby, which is the keystone to this shared universe theory: Wallaby was a series whose fantasy elements were much more front and center. While the focus of Wallaby's short run was mostly on the same slice of life stories that define Azuma's work, a lot of elements of the manga's premise bear similarities to anime like Sailor Moon or Cardcaptor Sakura: A normal girl who is first introduced to the supernatural side of the world she inhabits by a talking animal/creature/toy whose personality contrasts with their cute appearance.

This connects back to Azumanga Daioh because Wallaby's main protagonists, Kokoro and Warabi, make a cameo in the manga at the first year cultural festival. Not only that, but the final chapter of Wallaby (Released shortly before the cameo in question) has Kokoro mention her school's cultural festival is coming up, confirming the two series take place in the same setting.

In addition, prior to finding success with his own, original works, Azuma was active in the doujin scene under the -pen name A-ZONE, with Anime/SailorMoon being the most frequent subjects of his doujinshi. Many of the foundations of his later works like Azumanga Daioh and Yotsuba&! first show up in these Sailor Moon doujinshi, which most commonly focused on the Sailor Scouts getting involved in quirky, humorous situations in their civilian lives.

My theory is that when he began working on Wallaby, his first original title, Zuma planned for the series to be something akin to Sailor Moon, but with a greater focus on the protagonists civilian life. As the series only lasted for 8 chapters and was quickly eclipsed by Azumanga's popularity, Azuma didn't get the chance to explore the more fantastical side of the setting it took place in, but would end up repurposing some of these elements (Chiyo-Chichi, for instance) for Azumanga Daioh.

TL;DR version - All of Kiyohiko Azuma's original works takes place in a setting somewhat resembling Sailor Moon's, but since none of the main characters are aware of or involved in the magical girl aspects of the world they only ever show up as weird background details.

* It still doesn't explain why Nyamo would be so embarrassed about that letter, since it's pretty ordinary for girls in a RomanticTwoGirlFriendship to do stuff like that. Yukari would have likely done some lovey-dovey stuff herself then. It would explain though why Nyamo has such a high tolerance for Yukari's childish behavior, since she might still have some of the old feelings for her.

Per TRS, Schoolgirl Lesbians is no longer a valid trope.

She starts out reserved, only showing enthusiasm for sports (if it can be called enthusiasm) and competing against Sakaki in particular, but eventually starts opening up while walking home along the same route as Sakaki and even after becoming friendly with other classmates remained closest by far to Sakaki (staying near her at the festival, adding to Sakaki's textbook doodles after borrowing the textbook from her in the first place, and rarely if ever interacting with other classmates outside the Bonkuras'/Knuckleheads' stunts [including vicious competition with Tomo] and group activities). Whether it's a het-crush, IfItsYouItsOkay, or something else is up to the individual reader (note that this is not incompatible with the Asexual Kagura theory).

** My favorite fan-theory is that he did it so the boys would respect and listen to him and the girls would be scared/revolted and listen to him. And that he only targets girls that would never return the 'feelings' i.e. Kaorin. This troper's own theory is that he does it to make girls realize that they are SchoolgirlLesbians.

\n*** Looking through the DSM-5's diagnostic criteria for ASD, Osaka appears to meet enough qualifiers to fit a low-level diagnosis, assuming these were present in early life: abnormal socioemotional reciprocity, abnormal use of gestures, difficulty understanding certain social contexts, echolalia, special interests, and sensory sensitivities. Many of these noticeably impair her ability to fit in with neurotypical society-- many autistic people can socialize with neurotypical peers, but imperfectly, something Osaka demonstrates, and plenty of IRL autistic viewers frequently relate to her. So under current psychological standards, she could plausibly be autistic; since the DSM-5 allows a dual diagnosis of autism and ADHD, it's even possible for her to have both.
