[[WMG: Those baby crying sounds you hear occancionally? It is actually Daniel crying as a child.]]
I noticed that those crying sounds sound more like a little boy's crying. And it is told in loading screen messages that Daniel's father abused him. Since the Shadow/Orb/whole setting triggers traumatic events on Daniel's mind, it is not too farfetched that he starts remembering his childhood as well.

This was so [[spoiler:The The Baron would have another torturer with him.]]

The theory has some holes in it, some truth in the fiction and some fiction in the truth you could say. [[spoiler: Daniel hates Alexander for making him a "monster", and one of the prisoners calls Daniel a Brute, one of the zombies that appear late-game]]. However, there is some reality to the encounters with the monsters, as Alexander has his servants capture Daniel at one point to protect the Inner Sanctum. However, the servants never bother to make Daniel dead, or even put in a token effort to prevent his escape from the cells. Perhaps Alexander teleports Daniel to the cells with his power as a last-ditch effort, but can't do it again because the portal ritual must continue uninterrupted. Which leaves the question of how Daniel just gets back up after "dying" to a servant. Was it a bad trip that caused Daniel to pass out from horror, the shadow?
* The servant Grunt represents [[spoiler: the tortured victims of Daniel, desiring revenge against him and representing Daniel's desire to receive retribution for what he has done.]] Early on, residual memories or screams start to bleed through, and the grunts start manifesting. Daniel does have a journal entry about the helpers of Alexander, but the entry is rather vague on description. Some of the grunts are actually unable to attack Daniel, and will simply phase out if approached, suggesting hallucinations. The "real" grunts can also walk into dead-ends and simply vanish like they were not there.
* The Brute is likely [[spoiler: Daniel Himself, representing what he has become, just as the prisoner said to Daniel. It could be Amnesia's version of [[VideoGame/SilentHill2 Pyramid Head]], representing Daniel's wish to be punished/executed. It is also useless to run away from a Brute because they can outrun you, much like Daniel can't undo his murders.]] The "Great Knife" on the Brute's arm is also similar to another [[VideoGame/SilentHill2 Great Knife]].

Daniel probably never had kids or displayed romantic interest in anyone (if he had, it would have most likely been mentioned in his journals), so he couldn't have had a direct descendant. However, DummiedOut information says he had a sister named Hazel, and it's possible ''she'' had children and had Oswald as a direct descendant. Or any other siblings Daniel had.

** Perhaps the Kaernk represents Alexander? You only see Alexander at the end and never see his normal human appearance outside of paintings, like how you never get a look at the Kaernk. Both are creatures from another dimension and both are stuck in this world living out there time by preying on living things. The Kaernk is also categorically different than the Gatherers, similarly to how Alexander is categorically different from Daniel and the prisoners.
**This could also work if you have Daniel represent the Kaernk and Alexander the Brute. There is a lot of overlap between Alexander and Daniel in character, so it wouldn't be a stretch to say either could represent the Brute. As for the Kaernk, both the Kaernk and Daniel are never seem by the player and have placeholder models (Daniel is an arm and the Kaernk is a sphere). Both prey on living things to survive in some manner. The Kaernk are generally trapped underground, in places like the Wine Cellar and Wells. Daniel was trapped in an Algeria deep in an underground tomb.
**Perhaps the Shadow then would be Agrippa and/or Weyer? If the theories on this page about the Shadow hold water, than despite it's scary appearance it is really trying to help you like Agrippa. Agrippa gives you advice, the Shadow forces you to keep moving and at times opens up new areas (including ones needed to help Agrippa!).

* When Daniel gets imprisoned in the Cells, the Shadow gives him ''plenty of time'' to escape. It does not appear for some ten minutes. It eventually loses patience if Daniel stands idle, and doesn't leave. If Daniel leaves the cell, its spread stops immediately, averting a bad ending. Why does the guardian want Daniel to stop Alexander? Its fleshy matter manifesting behind Daniel like an AdvancingWallOfDoom can only signify the entity is not "hunting" but ''forcing him to go forward'', its advancements remind him there is no turning back from this dark descent. Any reluctance on the young man's part to defy Alexander's expectations enrages the "relatively-patient" guardian.

Alexander keeps telling Daniel he's "branded" by the cosmic guardian, [[ThisIsMyHuman implying ownership]], simply because he touched the orb and by doing so, became "tainted", inadvertently invoking the relic's powers and channeling them into himself. The Shadow may now regard Daniel as much of its possession as the mysterious artifacts it usually guards, hence why its so obsessed with him that it would [[DoomMagnet kill anyone who dared make contact with him]], and even ignore the two orbs currently residing in Brennenburg, making no attempt to recover them.

Only when the Shadow absorbs the Chancel does one of Daniel's diary entries appear. Its the one marking his downfall as he realises what he has become after murdering Zimmerman's innocent daughter. By bringing it back The Shadow may be forcing Daniel to relive the crippling guilt of his former-self's actions, specifically the awful memory that old Daniel couldn't bear to live with before taking the Amnesia Drink. Also, in the 'Bad Ending', it may be haunting him with the awful memories of all those he tortured to death in Brennenburg.
Portrait alexander insane
Alexander's portrait in low sanity, possibly hinting the Shadow's true nature due to Alexander's red skin from his face matching the creature's red fleshy residue.
While Daniel's sanity is low, Alexander's portrait with his face sporting red fleshy skin, empty eyes, and a rather inhuman-looking mouth could hint the Shadow's true identity as Alexander's red skin from his portrait match the Shadow's fleshy residue and what this invisible creature really look like.
The Shadow's claim on Daniel also provides a plausible explanation for why Daniel resurrects whenever he ends up dead in the castle (unlike Amnesia: Justine, who only gets one chance). The Shadow has no intention of letting Daniel die, wishing only to "hold his feet to the fire" via terror, and make him "experience purgatory". This is showcased when it taunts Daniel should he fall down the well in the Nave when it intentionally traps him in a sealed room, then releases him. The entity wants to see whether Daniel's intentions with preventing Alexander misusing the orbs, are met with its approval. Alexander may also know this, hence his determination to quash Daniel's resolve - he can't permanently kill Daniel if the entity keeps reviving him, so he wants Daniel to give up so he can escape unscathed. This would also explain why, in the death screen, it "gives" Daniel a piece of advice to not die or say "you must carry on" as in saying Daniel must keep going to stop Alexander.
In order to use the orb long enough to perform the ritual without being killed the Baron may have turned Daniel into a sacrifice for the Shadow. Alexander hints at this several times, saying that "things can be done, but at a price" and urging Daniel to offer himself up. It might offer another explanation for the entity's strange behavior, since it is hounding Daniel, but ignoring its orbs.
If Alexander did infuriate the Shadow this would explain why it only killed him in the 'Revenge Ending', and left the 'redeemed Daniel' completely unharmed.
In the 'revenge ending' Daniel flees Brennenburg, but it cannot be certain if the shadow has departed forever, or turned back into its original "invisible-state" prior to Alexander's meddling. What is interesting is that castle Brennenburg collapses once Daniel leaves and not before. Whether this was the Shadow's doing, i.e. waiting for him to get to a safe distance, or purely coincidental is uncertain.
A strange red aura is visible around Daniel as he walks back out through the castle. The guardian may be following him again since Daniel is still "branded" or because it cannot reclaim its stolen orbs back, as they've already evaporated away.

However, DummiedOut information says he had a sister named Hazel, and it's possible ''she'' had children and had Oswald as a direct descendant. Or any other siblings Daniel had.

* The Brute also makes offensive appearances once Daniel finds the corpse in the morgue. [[spoiler: Possibly an indication that this was one of Daniel's murders. After the medical procedures to inoculate against the poison fungus, the avatar of Daniel makes a violent entrance.]]

Was it a bad trip that caused Daniel to pass out from horror?
* The servant grunt represents [[spoiler: the tortured victims of Daniel, desiring revenge against him and representing Daniel's desire to receive retribution for what he has done.]] Early on, residual memories start to bleed through, and the grunts start manifesting. Daniel does have a journal entry about the helpers of Alexander, but the entry is rather vague on description.

description.
It could be Amnesia's version of [[SilentHill2 Pyramid Head.]], representing Daniel's wish to be punished/executed. It is also useless to run away from a Brute because they can outrun you, much like Daniel can't undo his murders.]] The "Great Knife" on the Brute's arm is also similar to another [[SilentHill2 Great Knife]].

This was so [[spoiler:The Baron would have another torturer with him.]] What Daniel was before he had a potion forced into him? He was Jowee from DrawnToLife. His HeelRealization came when he started getting his memories back. Maybe sometime after the game, he got all his memories back (and his sanity with it).
