* ThemeTuneCameo: The closing theme from the first season, "Dango Daikazoku," pops up frequently in the series, especially in ''~After Story~''. It appears both as a {{leitmotif}} (it's Nagisa's main theme) and as a song in itself, usually sung by Nagisa herself, but sometimes by other characters (usually Tomoya) when they're remembering her.

* GayOption: Yes, there really ''is'' a Sunohara ending (really a gag bad end), made available by dumping Tomoyo just prior to locking onto her route. In it Tomoya decides that Sunohara is the only one for him (to Sunohara's considerable alarm).
** To get the "Sunohara" bad end, you have to push away all of the girls, Tomoyo just happens to be the last one in the sequence to be rejected. Perhaps to poke fun at the player, Tomoya says, despite meeting all these girls, he doesn't the slightest interest in any of them so he must be gay.

** Furthermore, by omitting key details, he makes Ryou think that Nagisa's plea to reinstate the drama club is actually a love confession.

** There's so much mood whiplash in the series overall you'll need a neck brace by the time it's over.

Tomoya Okazaki is an [[OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent ordinary high school senior]] who [[BookDumb doesn't take his studies seriously.]] Always [[{{Delinquents}} late for class, he's seen as a delinquent]] by the rest of his classmates, who are busily preparing for their college entrance examinations. He hates his life and the whole town, and the closest thing he has to a real friend is LoserProtagonist Youhei Sunohara, who just barely manages to rise to the level of ButtMonkey at the best of times. Tomoya is thoroughly miserable.

* ShipSinking: Four alternate romantic options (Kyou, Ryou, Tomoyo, Kotomi) are [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvemcebvJb8&feature=related swiftly dispatched at once during a tennis match late in the first series]], the girls becoming increasingly miserable as Tomoya's unconscious behavior makes it crystal-clear who the OfficialCouple is. Their tears were matched by tears of ''[[DieForOurShip rage]]'' from shippers, the obviousness of said OfficialCouple be damned. Well, there's always the VisualNovel. And the AlternateUniverse arcs for Tomoyo (season one {{omake}} / episode 24) and Kyou (''~After Story~'' {{omake}} episode 25 / OVA).

** In the main {{anime}}, few of the Tomoya X not-Nagisa shippers really had their hopes up. It was blatantly obvious from the beginning who the [[OfficialCouple official main couple]] was. (See FirstGirlWins and DeliberatelyMonochrome.)

* AdultFear: This show takes a shot at fathers. [[spoiler:Imagine if your wife died giving birth, and you'd raised your child for years, only to have her die in your arms, her last words were that she loved you and didn't know why it was getting so dark. Tomoya broke down and cried, dying and crying out for someone to help him save his daughter.]]

* EveryoneCanSeeIt: The viewer can tell Tomoya and Nagisa are the OfficialCouple by the opening credits of the first episode. Most other characters come to this conclusion quickly, too... except that Kyou and Ryou discover this the hard way. But even after a naval battle's worth of ShipSinking, Tomoya and Nagisa just can't see themselves as a couple. [[spoiler: Until the SugarWiki/{{Heartwarming|Moments}} final scene of the final (non-{{omake}}) episode of season one.]]

* PunchedAcrossTheRoom: This tends to happen to Youhei. (A lot.) Sometimes down the hall, out the window, and into the top of a nearby tree. [[SugarWiki/FunnyMoments And down a garbage chute]]

* SnowMeansLove: In Tomoyo's route in the VN, Tomoya [[spoiler:breaks up with her [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy so that she can focus on her responsibilities]] and become successful]]. After eight months, he walks out of the school one day and sees her standing in the snow in front of him. She tells him that [[spoiler:her responsibilities are concluded]], that she loves him, and that [[spoiler:she has been waiting for him for those whole eight months]]. [[SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoments They hug.]]
