** One of the freedom fighters mentioned being barred from a movie theater for being black.

* AnAesop:
** This game does not shy away from showing how Nazi ideology corrupts everything and everyone who believes in it, and how collaborating with it is a product of selfishness and racism.
** The game has a surprising amount of PetTheDog and CryForTheDevil moments as depicted in various letters from Nazis to their families. Oddly enough, this doesn't go against the former theme - the intended message is most likely "Yes, these people have family and others they care about. But they've been corrupted by Nazism, and they're terrible people who believe in a murderous ideology that destroys everything around them, so screw 'em."
** The game also makes a point with that calling and accusing someone of being a Nazi when they aren't, or lashing out at allies who only want to help, can be just as cruel and damaging as any other kind of label or prejudice.
** When a woman named Adler flirts with a German officer, he returns her affections and praises her zeal for agreeing with Nazi ideals, until she makes a misguided remark about 'impure Austrians', at which moment he immediately turns on her, because Hitler himself is Austrian. The lesson in this is twofold: Firstly, trying to cozy up to racists will make you a jackass. Secondly, trying to cozy up to racists will backfire when they inevitably turn on you for your inevitable misstep, because there's no consistency or sense in such misguided hatred.
** You don't have to follow up your parents' steps if they are in the wrong, as both B.J. (with his father Rip) and Sigrun (with her mother Engel) display across the game.
** In addition to the bit above regarding BJ's father, Rip's racism and the complacent attitude of many Americans to the Nazi occupation bring up the important fact that 20th century America still had grave problems of its own regarding bigotry even when it fought the Third Reich. This leads to the aesop of never being apathetic in times of injustice, especially when Grace points out that marginalized folk have fought and still fight for their rights on a daily basis. Oppression doesn't need jackbooted Nazis to be any less real.

While the previous games already had the delicious irony of William being essentially an Aryan-looking super soldier MadeOfIron mowing down actual Nazis, here we see the roots of this, Rip's twisted and cruel treatment may have had an impact on his son becoming a strong and remorseless fighter... for the cause that is the opposite of Rip's own. * SequelDifficultySpike: On a baseline, The New Colossus is noticeably harder than The New Order or The Old Blood. You no longer have the health and armor upgrades that significantly improved your durability, and in fact your health will be limited to 50 for the first half of the game. Player damage feedback also seems significantly worse than in the previous games, making it easy for enemies outside your field of view to blast away over half your health[=/=]armor before you even notice. This is especially apparent when replaying missions with the Combat Simulator, where you don't have access to weapon upgrades like the assault rifle's armor-piercing sniper mode or the Laserkraftwerk's charged shot which significantly tilt the balance of the game back in your favor. In addition, enemies simply do way more damage here than they did in the previous game.

* MechaMooks: The Nazis have these now, in addition to the robotic dogs and cybernetic/armored human troops. They can take more bullets than flesh-and-blood Nazis, dual wield laser blasters, and can perform super-jumps and rapid sideways or forward dashes.

* MoralMyopia: America under Nazi rule has Klansman walking around openly during parades and officers drinking milkshakes while people are scared shitless around them. It is expressed repeatedly and vocally through the game that it all hinges on their racism: they care if you are Aryan, everyone else (including otherwise "pure" Aryans who are "deviant" in refusing to embrace Nazi ideology) is literally subhuman in their eyes.
