* ExplodingBarrels: The game has some locations with barrels that explode when shot. Often the enemies are conveniently next to them.
* ExtremeOmnivore: Near the end of chapter 3, Maw's dietary habits, according to him, consist of everything.

* FacelessEye: Syn's default form when appearing to the humans is as a giant holographic eye that rolls around, as if it's studying Johnny.

* SequentialBoss: All bosses except the first one have multiple phases, a few even have sub-phases.

* DuelBoss: Johnny vs. Maw in Napalm Blitz. No gimmicks, [[WolfpackBoss no hordes of enemies helping Maw]] (unlike every other boss, including the fight against [[spoiler:Superior/Astral Maw]]), and no locked doors/barriers blocking Johnny from fighting him. It's just a one-on-one spectacle to prove who's superior.

* EvolvingTitleScreen: Title screen depends on what chapters have been completed so far.

* InVehicleInvulnerability: You don't take damage when inside vehicles.

* MeatMoss: Syn's "bio-cores" produce fleshy, gory tendrils lined with screen monitors, marking her territory. It's heavily implied to be made out of the unfortunate people who once resided in the infested areas. [[spoiler:After Syn interfaces with Artifact Zero, thousands of new bio-cores become active throughout Paradise City, leaving the city unrecognizable in a matter of hours. It gets even ''worse'' after Episode 3's two year TimeSkip, as the tendrils of flesh have grown into a lattice that [[StarScraper extends out into space]], latching onto the planet's moon.]]

** [[spoiler:Syn's Artifact Zero form and the FinalBoss of Episode One, whose body consists of various organic and mechanical growth fused together into a gigantic form. It can also BeamSpam Johnny almost non-stop with its various weapons]].

* PoorCommunicationKills: Chapter 2 starts off with Syn explosively taking over all of Paradise and blocking communications off-world, cutting off Johnny and SAMM. Shortly thereafter, three more "Street Cleaners" show up (including the woman who brutally dismembered Johnny Turbo in the past). Apparently, the Exec figured the lack of communication meant that Johnny was compromised by Syn and is one of the many cyber-maniacs that needs killing now (not that Johnny is talkative to begin with, but presumably he can either text or use SAMM to send messages). Of course, the three Street Cleaners are [[PsychoForHire Psychos For Hire]] so they wouldn't really care about hearing his side of the story anyway.

* RedShirtArmy: Episode 3 introduces the Vermillion Front, a mercenary army that invades Paradise in an effort to stop Syn from escaping the planet and conquering the galaxy. By the time Johnny gets involved after the TimeSkip, the last vestiges of the Front are being slaughtered in a hopeless LastStand. Later, the Vermillion Front's naval group attempts a last-ditch attack on the orbital space station Vector-4, only to get blown out of the sky by Syn's own navy.

* SinisterSurveillance: Syn can see ''everything'', thanks to being in control of the city's entire network. But that doesn't stop Johnny from blasting through Syn's minions and showing the AI what humans are capable of.

* TeleFrag: The sniper rifle has an ability to telefrag weaker opponents.

* VideoGameSliding: Sliding allows for fast movement speed and also doubles as an attack capable of instantly killing weaker foes.

* WeCanRebuildHim: This happens to Johnny ''twice.'' In flashbacks, we see how he was brutally dismembered and shot to pieces by Ripper and a few other techno-punks. The box with a pulse meter on it that he keeps next to him? His spare ''brain'' that he needs an expensive operation to permanently put inside himself, to keep his temporary replacement brain from disintegrating. Then the TimeSkip happens. [[spoiler: Johnny is blown to bits by Maw and a bunch of Syn-lasers, but two years later, Syn takes over a techno-punk and drags Johnny's body to one of Syn's medical bays (Syn is trying to do an EnemyMine). We get a first-person view of it removing his head, removing all the unrepairable body parts from his torso and limbs, and reattaching/replacing all of them.]]
* WhoDares: Syn first chimes in with "You dare stand before me?" line. One of her last lines is "You dare use my powers against me, Johnny?"

* ChainsawGood: Johnny has a chainsaw built into his ''shin''. [[spoiler:And in his arms.]]. He can also use an augment that adds a chainsaw to his other leg.

* TheGoomba: Screen Junkies are the most basic and frequently encountered enemies. They simply run at the player, have only melee attacks and go down very easily.

** [[spoiler:Eventually you will gain a chainsaw arm upgrade. It can be activated by getting enough chainsaw leg kills.]]

* TVHeadRobot: Several synthetic enemies have television screens in place of their heads, though instead of a complete face the screen shows... a ''mouth'' (?).

* {{Cyborg}}: Johnny Turbo himself, a human enhanced with mechanical implants. His flashback in one cutscene reveals that Johnny was an ordinary soldier before being brutally massacred by the machine overlords.

** The second episode takes place in Paradise after Syn has been taking over, not just Paradise's computer systems but also the entire world, thanks to gaining control of the Artifact Zero. SAMM barely escaped in the nick of time after Johnny ejected his card, to be put into his own cyborg systems, to prevent Syn from taking over SAMM.
** The third episode occurs after [[spoiler:Johnny was murdered by Maw]]. During the TimeSkip, you find out that [[spoiler:Maw has nearly taken over the whole solar system and is in the process of destroying the last of the mercenary reinforcements sent in]].

* {{Gorn}}:
** Most, if not all, of the enemies are grotesque mockery of humanity, with the appearance to match.
** Episode 2 has more gory and squeamish scenes than the previous one.

* OurHeroIsDead: Johnny is killed a second time [[spoiler:at the end of Episode 2 by Maw.]] It isn't until [[TimeSkip two years later]] that Syn revives him, and even then, Syn had to completely rebuild his body. ''Again.''
