''Thief'' is a 2014 reboot of the ''VideoGame/{{Thief}}'' series of action-adventure stealth games. The game was developed by Eidos Montreal and published by Creator/SquareEnix on February 25,2014. Contrary to many popular rumours, the new ''VideoGame/{{Thief}}'' game is being developed by a mostly different team within Eidos Montreal than the one that worked on ''VideoGame/DeusExHumanRevolution''.

* StealthBasedGame: Mostly follows the pattern set out by the original series (i.e. stealth based on hiding in shadows and balancing your movement in dark and lit areas for further progression), and Garrett doesn't even have his sword or a dagger this time around.

There's even an ''extra''-stealthy pacifist gameplay style called Ghost.

Nevermind my previous edit. I\'ve heard dozens of f-bombs and I\'m now convinced that they did nothing about the fan backlash.

* GoshDarnItToHeck: Due to fan backlash toward the instances of "fuck", many of the f-bombs were changed to "frig". One can still find a few "fucks" found here and there though.

* MadeOfIron: If you choose to confront [[spoiler: the Thief-Taker General]] in a straight fight during the ClimaxBoss confrontation, he can take an ''incredible'' amount of damage before being defeated (requiring several blast arrows to knock down, which are otherwise a one-hit-kill against anything else.]] Pretty impressive considering he's just a normal human being with no supernatural powers. This is likely to encourage players to take the stealthy approach instead and sneak away from the fight entirely.

Added DiffLines:

** The Moira Asylum chapter seems to be an attempt to evoke the feeling of the Shalesbridge Cradle.

Added DiffLines:

* ArmCannon: The Thief-Taker General has an apparently custom-made arm-mounted crossbow as his primary weapon. Like Garrett, he can use and assortment of different arrows for it, including explosive arrows.

* MythologyGag:
** Garrett still has an odd eye in this continuity; instead of from having it ripped out and eventually replaced with a prosthetic camera, here it's because [[spoiler: a piece of the Primal Stone got embedded inside it during the prologue]].
** Garrett has a mentor-like relationship with a younger female thief, a call back to the ending of ''Deadly Shadows''.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: [[spoiler: The Baron's plan to invent "electricity" and uplift society to the next stage of civilization might actually have worked out ok if Garrett and Erin hadn't crashed the Primal summoning ceremony and set the events of the game in motion.]]

Added DiffLines:

* OrderVersusChaos: The conflict between Hammerites and Pagans has been replaced by a similar conflict between the Industry-focused nobility and the Graven, a revolutionary group from among the lower classes who want to overthrow the nobility and also worship the "old gods".

* The Plague: The Gloom. Starts out with flu-like symptoms, ends with [[DrivenToSuicide suicidal depression]], and apparently [[OhCrap airborne]].

Not true. Orion among other characters drop the real f-bomb during the game.

Its way too soon to say that the game is a continuity reboot, given all the evidence that at least seems to point towards it happening post-Deadly Shadows

* ContinuityReboot: That much is certain at this point.
** ContinuityNod: However, Garrett starts out as a mentor to a young female thief, which seems to be a ShoutOut to the ending of ''[[VideoGame/{{Thief}} Thief Deadly Shadows]]''.

!!Tropes seen in this game:
* ContinuityReboot: That much is certain at this point.
** ContinuityNod: However, Garrett starts out as a mentor to a young female thief, which seems to be a ShoutOut to the ending of ''[[VideoGame/{{Thief}} Thief Deadly Shadows]]''.
* KillThePoor: As the "Uprising" trailer reveals, much of the story seems to center on The City's evolution into the industrial era, and the [[AristocratsAreEvil wealthy authorities are completely uninterested]] in providing for the poor labor classes who now find themselves out of work, out of money, and out of medicine and food, enforcing UrbanSegregation to keep them out of sight and out of mind as they die off.
* TheObiWan: Garrett starts out the game as this to a young thief.

It remains to be seen how different in terms of difficulty and execution the overall stealth experience will be. Additional gameplay footage released in the coming months might reveal more.
