* GrandfatherClause: Ichigo, Naruto, and Goku were all programmed before the {{Retool}}, and the game has largely been trying to break away from the anime stigmatism that it's been [[HateDumb relentlessly criticized for]]. According to developer Kiki in a forum post ([[LostForever which no longer exists]]), Naruto in particular wouldn't have made it in if it had been up to her, although she respects how well he [[DivergentCharacterEvolution gradually developed into a unique character]] over the years rather than being a generic {{Shotoclone}} like in the earlier demos, and is now glad he's in.

* ArtifactTitle: The game has long departed from ''Super Smash Flash''; that game [[CanonDiscontinuity is completely ignored here]]. The title was officially considered "likely to change" in the official [=FAQ=] (until recently) due to the differences, but it's almost definitely permanent at this point as [[GrandfatherClause that's what everyone knows it as now]].

Added DiffLines:

* RecursiveFanfiction: The game takes many cues from ''VideoGame/ProjectM'', such as moveset alterations and the [[VideoGame/{{Castlevania}} Dracula's Castle]] stage.

* CollisionDamage: The enemies in Adventure Mode, along with the Mario brothers, the Sonic characters, and Samus while they're jumping.
* {{Combos}}: While normally impossible due to the primitive engine, some could be performed due to a GoodBadBug with some characters, namely Mario, Zelda, and Captain Falcon.

* GameBreakingBug: The famous "one hit [=KO=]" bug, which allows some attacks to kill instantly at just 50% while standing still. Unfortunately, though, [[TheComputerIsACheatingBastard Master Hand and Crazy Hand]]'s attacks have this trait, too, which makes [[NoDamageRun unlocking Inuyasha]] nearly impossible without cheating.

Flash'']]

* EasterEgg: In one demo version of ''Super Smash Flash 2'', the credits say that the Wario Ware, Inc. stage was "Made by Wario. Waa haa haa!"

* GameMod: The planned concept of "expansion characters" for ''Super Smash Flash 2''.
* GangplankGalleon: Gangplank Galleon itself appears as a stage in the second game.
* GlassCannon: Kirby is the usual ''Smash'' rendition of this trope, as Black Mage. Lloyd, however, is closer to traditional fighting games variant of this trope.
* GradualGrinder: Sora's moveset is designed to be like this; lots of combos, little potential for knockouts. According to the devs before the release of v0.8, this is meant to emulate the tendency of ''VideoGame/KingdomHearts'''s battles to revolve around whittling down the enemy's [=HP=] because they ''just... won't... die''.

* JackOfAllStats: Who else? Mario.
** Link is like this, but with projectiles. Sora seems to be like this as well.
** Naruto is mostly this. His attacks are moderately fast, decently strong, average air attacks, and his special moves are strong in power and range.

* LightningBruiser: Captain Falcon, Goku, Ichigo, all of them in the second game are this in a way.

** Mega Man is the projectile version of this trope. Slow in both attacks and speed, but with an arsenal of projectiles to make up most situations and give him combo options in long distance.
* MisbegottenMultiplayerMode: In the first game, you could battle it out with two players...but [[CameraScrew the camera always follows the first player]], ignoring the second.

* GradualGrinder: Sora's moveset is designed to be like this; lots of combos, little potential for knockouts. According to the devs before the release of v0.8, this is meant to emulate the tendency of ''VideoGame/KingdomHearts'''s battles to revolve around whittling down the enemy's [=HP=] because they ''just... won't... die''.
* JackOfAllStats: Who else? Mario.
** Link is like this, but with projectiles. Sora seems to be like this as well.
** Naruto is mostly this. His attacks are moderately fast, decently strong, average air attacks, and his special moves are strong in power and range.
* KamehameHadouken: With [[TropeNamer Goku]] around, of course this has to be his signature move.
* LightningBruiser: Captain Falcon, Goku, Ichigo, all of them are this in a way.
* LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters: With expansion characters, potentially infinite. Even the list of [[VanillaEdition vanilla]] playable characters, before it got revised,
was not among them.
*** VideoGame/BomberMan wasn't
impressive for a fangame.
* MightyGlacier: Donkey Kong. Slow and huge, but has some of the most dangerous smashes in game.
** Mega Man is the projectile version of this trope. Slow in both attacks and speed, but with an arsenal of projectiles to make up most situations and give him combo options in long distance.
* OffModel: Some of the [[{{Retraux}} past stages]], notably Fourside, Temple, and Peach's Castle, are seriously off-scale compared to their ''Melee'' counterparts.
* OvertookTheManga:
** Played straight in the earliest demos of ''2'', which were made after ''Brawl'' was '''announced''', but before it was '''released'''; back then, Smash Balls had to be picked up off the ground and used by pressing all buttons at once.

there either.
will [[DamnYouMuscleMemory run into problems with Mega Man]].
* PaletteSwap: As is tradition in Super Smash Bros., these are available as alternate costumes.
* PowerAtAPrice: In the second game, Goku can use the Kaio-ken, which increases his power at the cost of slowly ticking damage.
* PowerGlows: Characters while holding Smash Balls, many [[SuperMode Final Forms]], and Kaio-ken Goku.
* [[SpritePolygonMix Sprite Vector Mix]]: Custom-made sprites are used for characters, stages, items, and {{Assist Character}}s, while certain effects are flash-animated.
* SuperMode: Some characters' Final Smashes are temporary power-up transformations, called Final Forms. [[GameBreaker Some Final Forms can use Final Smash-like attacks as one of their Special Moves]], [[BroughtDownToNormal although this usually results in the Final Form ending early]].
** Also, Kaio-ken Goku.
* TrapMaster:
** Bomberman. His neutral special lays up to nine bombs anywhere around the stage which can all be dentonated at any time.
** Naruto, to an extent, as his attacks strike at distances and angles. He can also leave shadow clones on the ground for the opponents to trip over.

->''"This is my first real flash game, Super Smash Flash! "''
-->-- '''Mc Leod Gaming Website'''

''Super Smash Flash'' (hosted at [[http://mcleodgaming.com/ McLeod Gaming]]) is a series of [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Flash-based]] PlatformFighter ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBros'' [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin clones]] by Cleod 9. The original ''Super Smash Flash'' is somewhat weak, among other things [[TheyJustDidntCare featuring only one attack button]][[note]]Although, not one attack, like most reviews of the game incorrectly state. The in-game tutorial even says that you can do up to five moves with it depending on how you use it[[/note]]. It was nonetheless notable for its large amount of unlockable content. The sequel, ''Super Smash Flash 2'', which is currently in 0.9, is shaping up to be a true Flash version of ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBros''.

* ''SambaDeAmigo''
* ''VideoGame/TheLegendaryStarfy''
* ''VideoGame/PacMan''
* ''VideoGame/ViewtifulJoe'' (not in current version)

The [[MemeticMutation "Objection!" meme]] from the ''VisualNovel/AceAttorney'' franchise will also be referenced through an item gimmick.

----
!!Along with many {{tropes}} in the official VideoGame/SuperSmashBros games, these games contain examples of:

* TheAllSeeingAI
* ArtEvolution: Very clear. From [[TheyJustDidntCare directly ripped and MS-painted]] sprites in the original game, to ripped-but-tweaked sprites in the early sequel demos, to [[ShownTheirWork every character having entirely-custom, uniformly-styled sprites]].
* AssistCharacter: Summoned via Assist Trophies and [[Franchise/{{Pokemon}} Poké Balls]], as in the official series.
* DemotedToExtra: [[Manga/{{Bleach}} Renji]] and [[DragonballZ Vegeta]] were originally planned to be full characters in the sequel, but they were demoted to Assist Trophy and background character respectively.
** AscendedExtra: Following his announcement as official {{DLC}}, Vegeta will be [[PromotedToPlayable undemoted]] in the finished game.
* DownloadableContent: [[http://ssf2expansions.motionforum.net/ Expansion characters]] for ''Super Smash Flash 2'', though the functionality doesn't exist yet.
** [[Manga/DragonBall Vegeta]] and [[Manga/OnePiece Monkey D. Luffy]] have both been confirmed for official {{DLC}} once the full game is released.
* DuelingGames: ''Super Smash Flash 2'' and ''Super Smash Bros. Crusade''. Both are vying for the title of best Smash Fangame, and time will tell which one is better.
** The developers of both games have tried to avert this, saying that the games should be treated as separate games with separate goals that should not be compared. [[FanDumb Doesn't stop the fans of each from demonizing the opposing game, though]].
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: The second game seems much like the official Smash games. The first, not so much.
* EasterEgg: In one demo version of ''Super Smash Flash 2'', the credits say that the Wario Ware, Inc. stage was "Made by Wario. Waa haa haa!"
* FragileSpeedster: Sonic and Tails have become this; Sonic in the ground way (fastest character in ground) and Tails in air.
* HitboxDissonance: Samus' Machine Gun moves in the first game. The machine gun fire has a hitbox. Not Samus' gun, ''the actual machine gun's bullets have hitboxes.'' This can be seen in Adventure mode levels where if you use the machine gun specials at certain ranges, ''Samus'' will be the one to take damage and be knocked back. Its like something out of ''VideoGame/{{Daikatana}}''.
* JackOfAllStats: Who else? Mario.
* LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters: With expansion characters, potentially infinite. Even the list of [[VanillaEdition vanilla]] playable characters, before it got revised, was impressive for a fangame.
* MercyInvincibility: While the ''Smash'' games weren't known for this, it becomes a point in the first Flash which also averts this in the worst possible way, especially in Adventure Mode where just ''brushing'' against an enemy in any level could result in your damage skyrocketing to maximum in a very short time, [[Manga/FistOfTheNorthStar Hundred Crack Fisting]] [[PunchedAcrossTheRoom you to death]]. A normal enemy can do this.
* MightyGlacier: Donkey Kong in the second game. Slow and huge, but has some of the most dangerous smashes in game.
** Mega Man is the projectile version of this trope. Slow in both attacks and speed, but with an arsenal of projectiles to make up most situations and give him combo options in long distance.
* MisbegottenMultiplayerMode: In the first game, you could battle it out with two players...but [[CameraScrew the camera always follows the first player]], ignoring the second.
* OriginalCharacter: [[http://mcleodgaming.wikia.com/wiki/Blade Blade the Hedgehog]] and [[http://mcleodgaming.wikia.com/wiki/Blue Blue the Hedgehog]], sword-wielding SonicTheHedgehog fan characters someone made who ended up as characters in ''Super Smash Flash''.
** Before the roster was revised, ''Super Smash Flash 2'' had those two return, and added [[http://mcleodgaming.wikia.com/wiki/Azrael Azrael]] and [[http://mcleodgaming.wikia.com/wiki/Spikeman Spikeman]].
* OvertookTheManga:
** Played straight in the earliest demos of ''2'', which were made after ''Brawl'' was '''announced''', but before it was '''released'''; back then, Smash Balls had to be picked up off the ground and used by pressing all buttons at once.
** [[InvertedTrope Inverted]] since v0.9a, once the official fourth Super Smash Bros. game was announced. Fans have speculated that incoming players from there will [[DamnYouMuscleMemory run into problems with Mega Man]].
* PlatformFighter
* PowerAtAPrice: In the second game, Goku can use the Kaio-ken, which increases his power at the cost of slowly ticking damage.
* PowerGlows: Characters while holding Smash Balls, many [[SuperMode Final Forms]], and Kaio-ken Goku.
* ReTool: v0.7. That was the official turning point when the direction changed to a general anything-goes fangame to aiming for professional quality.
* RingOut: Just like in the original ''Super Smash Bros.'' games.
* [[SpritePolygonMix Sprite Flash Mix]]: Custom-made sprites are used for characters, stages, items, and {{Assist Character}}s, while certain effects are flash-animated.
* SuperMode: In [=SSF2=], some characters' Final Smashes are temporary power-up transformations, called Final Forms. [[GameBreaker Some Final Forms can use Final Smash-like attacks as one of their Special Moves]], [[BroughtDownToNormal although this usually results in the Final Form ending early]].
** Also, Kaio-ken Goku.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: A set of pickups called [[KingdomHeartsChainOfMemories Battle Cards]] were planned, which would summon Creator/{{Disney}} characters to your aid. [[Disney/{{Aladdin}} The Genie,]] [[WesternAnimation/TheNightmareBeforeChristmas Jack Skellington,]] and [[Disney/LiloAndStitch Stitch]] were confirmed before the cards were dropped for being too similar to Assist Trophies and Poke Balls, and the developers feeling that Disney characters didn't fit the game very well.
** Also, the following characters were removed from the sequel: Vegeta, Renji, Blade, Blue, Azrael, Spikeman, Robo Ninja, Rock Lee, Young Link, Mr. Incredible, Inuyasha, and Mega Man (X) (Blade, Blue, Azrael, Spikeman, and Robo Ninja were "fan-made" characters, but were removed when the devs themselves thought they did not fit in with "professional turn" the sequel was taking.)
** Wario was planned for the first game, but ended up being scrapped. He was one of the new characters in the second game, following his appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. There are remnants of his planned appearance, like the Floating Islands Stage, which had Sprites and Enemies from the [[VideoGame/{{WarioLand}} Wario Land]] games.
* TheWikiRule: [[http://mcleodgaming.wikia.com/wiki/McLeodGaming_Wiki Here]].
* UnexpectedCharacter:
** From the first game, [[WesternAnimation/TheIncredibles Mr. Incredible]], [[WTHCastingAgency but not in a good way.]]
** The second game has [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyI Black Mage]], who was unexpected because at the time there was a confirmed roster of playable characters in the game, and Black Mage was not among them.
*** VideoGame/BomberMan wasn't there either.
