''Super Robot Wars Gaiden'' is the first OriginalGeneration game...[[UrExample EVER]].
That said, it was released on the SuperNintendoEntertainmentSystem in 1996, and for a SNES game, it featured the best 16-bit graphics ever, mecha drawn to scale (averting the SuperDeformed formula), and had a storyline that made ''SuperRobotWars4'' look like FanFiction. Suffice to say, this is the best SuperRobotWars on the SNES.
The story of ''Gaiden'' tells solely on the origins of the entire Masou Kishin cast, and the genesis of the long feud between Masaki Andoh and Shu Shirakawa. The plot is split into two parts: "Part 1" occurs prior to the events of ''SuperRobotWars2'', while "Part 2" takes place following the end of ''SuperRobotWars4''. Also, this was the first [=SRW=] that ''could'' have been released for localization, but it's rather racy, risque dialogue sadly made this a NoExportForYou. It's also the first SRW to incorporate voice acting.
An UpdatedRerelease for the NintendoDS was out in 2010, under the name ''Super Robot Wars OG Saga: Masou Kishin - The Lord of Elemental'', linking the game up with the rest of the [[SuperRobotWarsOriginalGeneration Original Generation series]]. In October 2011, a PlayStationPortable sequel entitled ''[[ColonCancer Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Masou Kishin II: Revelation of Evil God]]'' was announced, and released on January 12, 2012. To mark the 15th anniversary of the Masou Kishin series, a new UpdatedRerelease of the original game was bundled with ''Revelation of Evil God'', complete with enhanced visuals and extended voice acting.

Aside from reprises in ''SuperRobotWarsEX'' such as ShouHayami (Rodney), TesshoGenda (Ahmed) and DaisukeSakaguchi (Zash), there's also Yuka Komatsu (AKA the new voice of [[SaintSeiya Opiochous Shaina]] as Rebecca/Becky), MieSonozaki (Simone), UnshoIshizuka (Gennajy), RyotaroOkiayu (Gino), HisaoEgawa (Tian), TakashiNagasako (Lubikka) and RikiyaKoyama (Ricardo).
* HiddenDepths (You'll get to see many of the Masou Kishin characters' depth, development and personalities, but Tytti's probably gets the most out of ''Gaiden'', what with the lack of progress seen in ''EX'')
* {{Lolicon}} (Jino Varensia; his manner towards Presia Zenosakis makes Masaki worry)
* MadScientist (Zet Laas Blakio)
* OriginalGeneration (Not the TropeNamer, but definitely the UrExample)
* ReTool (Ahmed Hamdi, one of the original pilots from Arab, is at first a devout Muslim whose BattleCry is "ALLAHU AKBAR!!". In the rerelease, his Muslim reference is removed, making him just a normal Arab, probably to avoid UnfortunateImplications)
** In the rerelease, the names of Mio's familiars are changed into [[JourneyToTheWest Son Goku, Cho Hakkai and Sha Gojyo]], each looking like the three of them.
* RedBaron ("Heavenly Sword" Zeoroot Zan Zenosakis and "Sword Saint" Shumel Heul)
* RelationshipVoiceActor (With the exception of Lune, all major characters have done voiceovers for TalesSeries characters: Yang Long and Mio are [[VideoGame/TalesOfPhantasia Klarth and Arche]], Masaki and Tytti are [[VideoGame/TalesOfDestiny Leon and Philia]], while Shu is [[VideoGame/TalesOfTheAbyss Jade]])
** While we're on that, each one has also done at least one role in the ''{{Gundam}}'' franchise:
*** Masaki = [[GundamWing Heero Yuy]]
*** Yang Long = [[ZetaGundam Jerid Messa]] and [[GundamSeedAstray Gai Murakumo]]
*** Tytti = [[The08thMSTeam Aina Sahalin]]
*** Mio = [[Anime/AfterWarGundamX Tiffa Adill]]
*** Lune = [[Anime/MobileFighterGGundam Allenby Beardsley]]
*** And the big one, Shu = [[Anime/MobileSuitGundamWing Zechs Merquise]], [[Anime/TurnAGundam Gym Ghingnham]], and [[Anime/MobileSuitGundamSeed Mu La Flaga]]
*** Eran = [[{{Gundam 00}} Tieria Erde]]
* ShoutOut (In the remake, [[http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab347/aqaq83/ds.jpg eventually]] [[KikukoInoue Tytti]] [[strike: declares]] lies that [[RunningGag she's 17 years old...]])
-->'''Saphine''': "[[PhraseCatcher Oi oi...]]"
* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute (Inversed example: Mio was created first as the eventual herald of Zamzeed in ''EX'', but since Part 1 takes place way before ''EX'' (where Mio debuts), she's replaced by [[BoisterousBruiser Ricardo]] [[TokenMinority Silvera]] in ''Gaiden'', [[spoiler: who obviously gets KilledOffForReal halfway through the game [[DoomedByCanon to make way for Mio]] in Part 2]])
* UpdatedRerelease (For the NintendoDS. The majority of plot is kept, with only a few changes made to mesh it better with ''Original Generation'')
** And there's going to be another rerelease for the PSP, which will be bundled with ''Revelation of Evil God'' in a special edition.
* VaporWare (The guys who did the FanTranslation of ''SuperRobotWars3'' and ''[[SuperRobotWarsAlpha Alpha Gaiden]]'' have been saying they're gonna do this one...for almost ''a decade'' now...)

To mark the 15th anniversary of the Masou Kishin series, a new UpdatedRerelease of the original game will be bundled with ''Revelation of Evil God'', complete with enhanced visuals and extended voice acting.

Tropes common to this game are:
* AlternateCompanyEquivalent (After cutting their deal with Banpresto, developer [=WinkySoft=] released [[http://www.winky.co.jp/fs_rayblade.html Seireiki Rayblade]], which is very similar to this game and full of {{Captain Ersatz}}es)
* BagOfSpilling (Several units from Part 1 lose their upgrades after the timeskip to Part 2)
* BottleFairy (Rebecca "Becky" Turner. In fact, when she's drunk, which is often, she tends to strip topless)
* TheCameo ([[spoiler: [[SuperRobotWarsAlpha Ryusei Date]] appears in the DS rerelease when Masaki recalls the events in ''Original Generation'' between Part 1 and 2, more specifically the part at the beginning of the first game where he confronts Shu for the first time at Antarctica]])
* CombinationAttack (''Revelation Of Evil God'' finally gives some combination attack options, including Masaki-Lune, Yang Long-Tytti, Mio-Precia)
* CopyProtection (The DS rerelease has A LOT of intentional bugs should you play a pirated copy: first, you may not be able to get the game to run at all. Get past that, then {{Mook}}s start {{One Hit Kill}}ing you; get past that, then Shu will always OneHitKill you when he's required to just lower your HP to critical; [[DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment get past that]]...well, the game may finally run normally...except the music and everything is in SNES quality rather than what the DS offers)
* DownerEnding ([[spoiler: Part 1 ends with Langran completely wrecked, King Alzarl and one of the heralds dead (Ricardo) and the supposed "culprit" Shu leaving to the surface world to help Bian Zoldark with his impending revolution. Masaki leaves La Gias in pursuit of his nemesis]])
* FiveManBand
** TheHero: Masaki
** TheLancer: Yang Long
** TheBigGuy: Ricardo; succeeded by Mio
** TheSmartGuy: Xenia
** TheChick: Tytti
** TheSixthRanger: Lune (sometimes doubles as Masaki's other Lancer)
* {{Foreshadowing}} (At the end of the game, [[spoiler: Masaki gets lost again -- '''super''' lost. So bad that his friends aren't even sure where he ''is''. Where did he finally turn up? ''[[VideoGame/AnotherCenturysEpisode Another Century's Episode: R]]'']])
* GaidenGame (On the face of it, this is entirely true: Part 1 can effectively serve as canon to the Classic/[[SuperRobotWarsAlpha Alpha]]/Original Generation timelines, and if Shu is [[spoiler: KilledOffForReal and then came BackFromTheDead, only to rebel against [[PhysicalGod Shiva Volkruss]]]] in any of these continuities, it sets up Part 2)
* {{Gainaxing}} (Lune Zoldark, Princess Xenia and Simone Culian have it in the rerelease. In the sequel, Xenia gets this. In short, unless you're [[TokenWholesome Tytti]] or [[TokenMiniMoe Mio]], you bounce)
* HeyItsThatVoice (HikaruMidorikawa (Masaki), KazuhikoInoue (Huang Yang Long), KikukoInoue (Tytti Noorbuck), MikaKanai (Mio Sasuga), TakehitoKoyasu (Shu) and NarumiHidaka (Lune)). ''Revelation of Evil God'' adds up HiroshiKamiya (Eran Zenozakis))
