** This also takes the form of a fundamental gameplay mechanic called Chaining. By landing multiple hits against targets, you can start a Chain, which will constantly increase as long as a character in the party attacks an enemy. Chains are translated into a scaling damage multiplier, and sustaining a Chain fills the Burst Gauge. When the Burst Gauge is full, the party achieves a Gran Burst, which provides a random benefit and prevents your Chain from disappearing for the duration of the Gran Burst.

* GameplayAndStoryIntegration: While in the Delta Variant's Training Room, your HUD displays PP (Photon Points). While on Machia but before you obtain the power of Gran, your PP gauge remains empty until that particular cutscene, after which PP turns into GP (Gran Points).

* CompositeCharacter: As this game doesn't have the branch classes ''PhantasyStarOnline2'' introduced, the main classes are composites of both the original from the parent game and its branch.

* GridInventory: To use any of the Skills you earn while leveling up, you need to install them to the Skill Board. All your Skills are compiled in a handy list, and can be installed on the grid to obtain their effects. This allows the player to equip Skills from other classes to gain their effects, and some Skills, when installed next to each other on the grid, can create a Combo Skill Effect that applies an additional Skill on top of the Skills on the grid.

* GuestFighter: [[ResonanceOfFate Leanne]] can be stationed at the Delta Variant's base and signed on as a party member.
* HarmlessFreezing: Most of the Delta Variant's crew is stuck in cryogenic stasis, and without photons they can't be unfrozen. Fortunately, you can scrape up some Gran Pieces to free your shipmates, which will allow them to assist you in ways such as offering services or joining your party.
* [[FighterMageThief Hunter, Ranger, Force]]: The classic three are still available and have been loosened up from past installments, and the repertoire now adds the new [[JackOfAllTrades Buster]] class into the mix. Once you build your own Class Counter, you will be able to switch between them freely. As in the parent title, class/race combo restrictions have been removed, allowing Newmans to be Rangers and CASTs to be Forces.
* IShallTauntYou: The War Cry Skill, which temporarily draws all enemy aggro towards the player in question and boosts Hate Accumulation. When used effectively, it becomes much easier to hit targets who aren't targeting someone else, or you can just function as a tank to let your teammates clean up for you. Of course, [[DoomMagnet if used improperly...]]
* ItemCrafting: A key component of this game, as you won't be able to find weapons as drops, and must instead create your own from the Weapon Counter. You can also craft Accessories to add to your weapons, which will add to their stats and parameters.
* KaizoTrap: Dying Banshees and Banthers are still a threat if you stand under them during their death animation.
* KillItWithFire: Foie, the resident Fire-type Technic.
* LargeHam: The female announcer for Emergency Codes far out-hams the male announcer from [[PhantasyStarOnline2 PSO2]].
--> '''Announcer''': Emergency Code: '''[[OrganicTechnology GIII-GANTES!!!]]'''
* MixAndMatchWeapon: Assault Rifles, which, depending on the Gran Arts, can function like shotguns, grenade launchers, sniper rifles...
* OldSaveBonus: If you have ''PhantasyStarOnline2'' save data on your PSVita, you can unlock Zeno, Echo and Afin from that game as party members for ''Nova''.
* OurDragonsAreDifferent: The Machia variant of Dragonkin, which are already an example of OurDragonsAreDifferent.
* PaletteSwap: Several enemies, like Ra Oodans, Ra Badrians, and Judd Banthers, are recycled from [[PhantasyStarOnline2 PSO2]], but given this treatment. Gran Darkers as a whole are simply regular Darkers with the red glowing parts replaced with yellow.
* PlayerHeadquarters: The Delta Variant's crash site, which acts as their home base that [[AnInteriorDesignerIsYou you have total control over the development of.]]
* RandomEvent: Emergency Codes, which show up at any given time while exploring Quests, unless it's the Quest objective. This can range from defeating a bunch of enemies, to collecting Gran crystals, to [[GiantSpaceFleaFromNowhere defeating that boss that decided to show up...]]
* RelationshipValues: Each NPC has these, and they can be improved by taking them on Quests or fulfilling Promise Orders.
* SpinToDeflectStuff: How Partizans block.
* [[SwordsAkimbo Swords]][=/=]GunsAkimbo: Wired Lances and Twin Machineguns.
* TheGunslinger: Rangers can wield the Twin Machineguns, hopping around and popping off shots like a John Woo character.
* ThemeNaming: Most Gran Darkers, like their normal counterparts, end their names with -ahda.
* [[TwentyBearAsses Twenty Rockbear Asses]]: Some Promise Orders or Quest objectives require you to collect X amount of Y.
* VirtualPaperDoll: There are a bunch of costumes to try on, but you have to craft them first.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Some [=NPCs=] have normal hair colors, some have some pretty wacky ones. The PlayerCharacter can pick from ''any color in the spectrum.''

'''Phantasy Star Nova''' is the first ''VideoGame/PhantasyStar'' installment for TheEighthGenerationOfConsoleVideoGames, and a GaidenGame to the popular {{MMORPG}} ''VideoGame/PhantasyStarOnline2''. It was developed by TriAce for the PSVita and published by Sega. It will be released in Japan on November 27th, 2014.

''Nova'' introduces a subdivision of the [[GratuitousEnglish Artificial Relicit to Keep Species]], or ARKS, known as the Special Planetary Exploration Group Alter, a branch solely dedicated to finding new planets for the ARKS to explore. You are a member of one particular ship, the Delta Variant, that is approaching a new planet known as Machia. While in rehabilitation training with shipmates Lutina and Fieldia, the ship suddenly takes damage from laser blasts while flying over Machia's atmosphere, damaging the engines and sending the Delta Variant on a crash course to the surface of Machia.

When you come to, you're on the barren surface of the planet. The Delta Variant is out of commission, and the ARKS are unpacking and settling in around the crash site. However, the peace and quiet come to an end when Gran Darkers attack, killing off the members in droves due to the non-existence of Photons, the power source that allows the ARKS to fight and function. Sent out on a quest with Lutina to save stray ARKS, the two of you come across Yuno, who grants you the power of Gran, the energy source flowing through Machia. With an alternative energy source found, all that's left to do is to survive on Machia until the Delta Variant can get off the planet...

----
!! Phantasy Star Nova provides examples of:

* AnInteriorDesignerIsYou: You get to be an ''ex''terior designer, as you gain the ability to customize the Delta Variant's base. Besides the actually functional buildings you can install such as Shops, you can also install a variety of personal touches, such as shrine gateways.
* AttackItsWeakpoint: Several enemies have exploitable weak points that allow you to deal bonus damage, Gran Darkers in particular. Gigantes, however, generally have two: their glowing, Gran-infused flesh, and the cockpit on their head. Attacking the former will allow you to bring it down so you can attack the latter.
* BattleAura: Activating Stances invokes them for a second.
* TheBladeAlwaysLandsPointyEndIn: When Agrios throws Fieldia off, her Sword does this.
* BlockingStopsAllDamage: When you know the right skills, you can nullify damage by pressing the Guard button (where applicable) with proper timing, also known as a Just Guard.
* BoobsOfSteel: [=HUmarl=] Fieldia is definitely well-endowed, but she ''loves'' fighting.
* BoxingBattler: The Hunter's Knuckles let you fight with boxing-like punches, swerves, and jabs.
* BulletTime: When you use Twin Machineguns' Stylish Roll thrice in a row, time slows down. Oddly, only ''you'' slow down; everything else moves as normal. Provides plenty invincibility frames for the trouble, though.
* ChainLightning: Gizonde, of course.
* ChainsawGood: The Gigantes Garation is ''covered'' in chainsaws, on its wings and tail.
** You may come across Rabins, bunny-like Natives that have chainsaws for ''ears''.
* ColorCodedElements: According to the game, [[FireIceLightning Foie is red, Barta is blue, Zonde is yellow,]] [[WindIsGreen Zan is green,]] Grants is white, and [[PurpleIsTheNewBlack Megid is purple.]].
* {{Combos}}: As it borrows from PhantasyStarOnline2's combat system, weapons are capable of fluid and dynamic combos. Rods, Talises, Wands, and Halos are also capable of stocking Technics on their Weapon Palette in addition to their normal attacks (and in the case of Halos, Gran Arts), and can stock extra Technics on their Subpalette for extra versatility.
* ColossusClimb: The Gigantes, which are giant, towering beasts of OrganicTechnology. You can't scale them by normal means, but you can create [[HardLight Gran scaffolding]] with Halos or expendable items to take the battle to the sky.
* CrateExpectations: You can find many crates scattered around Machia, which generally contain things like parts or Gran Pieces.
* DeathDealer: The Force weapon Talis, which are thrown cards that also act as conduits for your Technics..
* DeflectorShields: When performing Guard or Just Guard with the Sword/Wired Lances, a round energy shield appears in front of you, representing the impact while nullifying the damage. Partisans would also count if their "shield" weren't of the SpinToDeflectStuff variety.
* {{Dualvertisement}}: Being developed by TriAce, the game has collaboration DLC with the TriAce games ResonanceOfFate, StarOceanTheLastHope, and ValkyrieProfile.
* EldritchAbomination: Darkers, naturally, but unlike the ''PhantasyStarOnline2'' kind, these ones have been mutated by Machia's Gran into Gran Darkers.
* ElementalPowers: Like its parent game, you have [[PlayingWithFire Fire]], [[AnIcePerson Ice]], [[BlowYouAway Wind]], [[ShockAndAwe Lightning]], [[LightEmUp Light]], and [[CastingAShadow Darkness.]]
* FrickinLaserBeams: Ragrants, which fires a thin beam made of light.
* FoeTossingCharge: Some Hunter and Buster Gran Arts are capable of it.
* GameplayAllyImmortality: The partners you can bring with you can resurrect as often as they want. Good thing too, since they're as strong as an actual player, unlike in their parent title.
* GiantEnemyCrab: Erude is a Gigantes GiantEnemyCrab loaded with FrickinLaserBeams and capable of performing a MacrossMissileMassacre.
